Description and composition

Long before the invention of microfiber, there was a fabric that was no less soft, but much more hygroscopic and environmentally friendly - flannel, not to be confused with flannel. It looked like a thick matte woolen cloth, mostly brown in color, and was used for insulation.

In the 18th century, home clothes were made from it (frock coats, caftans, pajamas). They lined warm coats with it, covered themselves with flannel blankets on long trips, and were taken by officers on military campaigns.

Since the middle of the 19th century, when cotton producers entered the global market, flannel and products made from it began to be made, first from a mixture of wool and cotton, and later - only from cotton.

The modern flannelette blanket is a product of the 20th century and socialist ideology. It was in the USSR that it was decided to bring comfort closer to the people and produce light and inexpensive summer blankets. The flannel blanket was considered a democratic and non-scarce product, so every family had more than one copy.

Nowadays, the bike is made, like a century ago, from cotton, occasionally with an admixture of wool up to 50%. Some products, especially those made in China, are supplemented with synthetic fibers (no more than 30%), but they are less pleasant to the touch and, as a result, are less popular.

Density

Density is an indicator that combines the number of warp threads and weft threads per 10 cm2. The baize has a dense structure and a special type of weaving of threads. A blanket made of this material retains heat well and is not afraid of heavy wear. Good density indicators increase the “life” of flannelette products.

Manufacturing

In the modern world of synthetic fibers, a flannelette blanket is an island of naturalness and waste-free production.

The production of a bike begins at the stage of selecting raw materials. Any raw cotton is suitable for it, not necessarily the highest grade, so what is often sent for processing is what is not suitable for other fabrics. But the essence of the manufacturing process is to clean the prepared material as much as possible. For this purpose, washing and carding machines are used.

The threads are not twisted, but shaped by the roving. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve a unique softness of the finished product. Cotton is dyed in different ways, sometimes at the stage of prepared yarn, sometimes by stamping on the finished fabric.

For flannelette blankets, GOST 27832-88 applies, which regulates the strength, quality of seams and color fastness.

Important nuances of choosing a blanket

We have figured out the fillings, types of blankets, their disadvantages and advantages. But in order for a product to truly meet all the expectations placed on it, it must:

  • Do not pose a hidden threat to the baby's health. This means that it should not contain toxic substances or dangerous dyes. Their function is to soften the fabric and give the product an attractive appearance. But no one can guarantee that such additions will not cause harm to the child, especially to the one just born.
  • Match the season. No matter how good a blanket is, it should be selected depending on the current season.
  • You should not wrap your baby in a warm blanket in the summer and a cold blanket in the winter. You should (preferably) have two or three types of blankets at your disposal:

  • for a home where the air temperature ranges from +19 to +24 degrees or more;
  • for spring and autumn walks;
  • for walks in winter.
  • Avoid being infected by bacteria and bed mites. Down and cotton wool are not protected from such situations, and therefore such fillers are conditionally suitable for newborns.
  • Give a feeling of comfort. Toddlers may protest if you cover them with an overly heavy blanket that literally “presses” on them, a blanket that does not allow air to pass through, since it will be hot under it, and a blanket that is “scratchy” or with tight stitching, which causes inconvenience for obvious reasons.
  • Now you are ready to choose a blanket, we hope you already know what product you and your newborn toddler need.

  • Advantages and disadvantages

    Flannelette blankets have long won a place in the hearts of consumers. Of course, price is important: textiles made from raw cotton are cheap, so they are available to everyone. However, its functionality is beyond praise. A warm and soft blanket will warm and protect a child, patronage nurses never tire of repeating this, and an adult flannelette blanket can be used as a bedspread.

    Flannelette blankets:

    • pleasant to the touch;
    • allow the skin to breathe;
    • safe for children;
    • wear-resistant;
    • lightweight, easy to carry;
    • hypoallergenic, do not cause contact dermatitis;
    • are not electrified;
    • Can be washed at home, no need to take it to the cleaners.

    However, like any product made of cotton, especially roving torsion, flannelette shrinks and is damaged by pests (several types of indoor moths).
