Useful tips: how to wash cashmere at home

Cashmere is one of the most expensive woolen fabrics, the price of which is fully justified by the quality.

However, despite the durability of such things, they are incredibly capricious in terms of washing and drying. Even a slight deviation from the required conditions can irreversibly damage the material.

In this article we will tell you how to wash cashmere at home, whether it is possible to use a washing machine, and whether cashmere items shrink after washing.

Which can and cannot be washed?

Washing cashmere depends on the type of fabric:

More detailed washing instructions that must be followed can be found on the manufacturer's label.

Difference in cleaning low quality and high quality material

Wet washing for pure cashmere is most often prohibited; preference is given to dry cleaning.

However, some experts advise not to get carried away with dry cleaning , since wool fibers made from goat fluff are identical to human hair - after washing they become shiny and soft, and after regular drying they become dull and lifeless. Therefore, many owners always wash things by hand.

The situation is a little simpler with cashmere, which contains impurities. It is allowed to wet such fabrics, but subject to conditions, since cashmere, even if not 100%, will lose its attractive appearance if handled incorrectly.

Machine washable

For automatic washing of cashmere, the same rules apply as for manual washing:

  • the water temperature should not exceed 30°;
  • only liquid detergent is used;
  • stain removers and bleaches are prohibited.

In addition, to ensure that washing cashmere does not bring disappointment, you should use the following recommendations:

  • Before loading into the drum, items are carefully folded and placed in a laundry bag. It minimizes the mechanical impact on the model and prevents the canvas from falling off.
  • On the panel, select the “wool”, “cashmere”, “silk” or “delicate wash” mode. The spin speed is turned off completely. “Drying” is not used.

Will cashmere shrink after washing or, conversely, stretch? If the temperature is chosen incorrectly and the friction is too intense, both can happen to it. To prevent the item from deforming, it is necessary not only to wash it properly, but also to properly wring it out and dry it.

Preparation for processing

Before you begin hand or machine washing delicate fabric, you need to prepare it for this procedure:

  1. Since the items are washed at a low temperature, an extra cleaning won't hurt.
    Garments should be gently but thoroughly shaken to remove dust and carefully run along the inside seams with a soft brush. The same brush can be used to clean the coat strictly along the direction of the pile.

  2. Remove all pellets, preferably using a special machine. In the absence of one, you should use nail scissors and be very careful not to accidentally make a hole. If washed correctly, the lint will not roll back.
  3. Empty pockets of large and small debris. The latter can be removed with a damp cotton swab or cotton swab.
  4. It is better to tear off or remove accessories, especially metal ones, so that oxidation does not occur and rusty stains do not appear on the fabric.
  5. The collar or fur parts should also be unfastened or stitched.
  6. Fasten all buttons and zippers, and turn items inside out.
  7. When machine washing, it is better to fold small wardrobe items into a laundry net, and pack outerwear, such as a coat, in a duvet cover, and then carefully sew up the hole with large stitches.

Removing stains at home

Stains are another point before “water procedures”. The fabric does not tolerate rough handling and cannot be rubbed, so all dirt is removed in advance:

  • a slight stain is removed with a soft sponge dipped in warm water;

  • a more persistent blot is removed using washing gel - blot the stain with a soapy sponge, leave for 40 minutes, then gently rub with a damp, clean sponge;

  • an identical procedure is carried out using baby soap, however, if there is a gel, it is better to use it due to its milder effect;
  • they also turn to folk remedies - ammonia and glycerin (1:3) - apply the mixture to the stain and rub lightly, then rinse, if necessary, repeat the action;
  • greasy stains are removed with soda - sprinkle the powder on the dirty area and leave for a couple of hours, then shake off the excess, and remove the residue with a damp sponge.

Choosing a cleaning method

Even with very careful and infrequent wear, cashmere items get dirty. The first thing you should do before taking active steps at home is to study the label and the composition of the fabric.

  • If the label says “cashmere (WS) 100%,” you’ll have to give up the washing idea. For such items, “dry clean only” is acceptable, that is, “dry cleaning only” in a professional dry cleaner.
  • When the item contains, in addition to cashmere, other natural fibers, for example: wool, silk or cotton, and there are no special instructions from the manufacturer, it can be washed by hand. This is the only way to refresh knitted cashmere sweaters.
  • If acrylic, polyester and other synthetic threads were used in the production of fabric other than cashmere, the item of clothing will withstand cleaning well in the washing machine.

What happens if you close your eyes to the crossed out container of water and “carefully” wash the item yourself? In the best case, water will wash out the dublerin from the fabric, which makes the product keep its shape. As a result, all the extreme parts of the model will twist, and the surface will be “squeezed”. It is impossible to correct such defects.

Step-by-step instruction

Washing cashmere is a delicate matter, so it is important to follow all the conditions of the process. If you have a choice between manual and machine cleaning, then the first method is preferable, since the chance of damaging the fabric during automatic washing is greater.

The main rule for both options is that the water should not be ice cold or hotter than 30°C. Experts recommend washing an item no more often than every 7-10 wears, which, ideally, should not be daily.

Suitable remedy

The detergent is no less important than the process itself, so before you start cleaning in any way, choose a suitable product:

  1. The powder should not be chosen because the granules are too large, which are not suitable for cool water and can settle on the material.

  2. The best option is a specialized liquid gel for cashmere and wool. It will carefully clean the fibers and help maintain their original size.
  3. Children's hair shampoo - mild ingredients designed for children will not harm the fabric.
  4. Dish soap with hand protection - these soaps are less aggressive and are suitable for delicate washing.

Bleach and stain removers are prohibited! The juice of half a lemon added to the water will add additional softness, and it will also get rid of the smell of sweat.

How to wash by hand?

This method is more gentle, however, it also has its own nuances . For starters, water. It shouldn't be hard, so chlorinated sewer fluid won't work.

It’s better to let the water stand for a couple of hours and pass it through a filter. Bottled or distilled water will also work.

Cashmere does not react well to changes in temperature, so the water during washing and rinsing should be at the same temperature.

Having poured the required water into a basin, the pre-selected product is added to the liquid, and not on the item, and then whipped with vigorous movements until foam appears. Do not pour too much product, otherwise the fabric will have to rinse for a long time.

Having completed the preparatory steps, it’s time to move on to washing:

  • Place the item turned inside out into a basin with soapy water and leave to soak for 10-15 minutes;

  • After this, the fabric is washed with light massage pressure. It is strictly forbidden to rub, twist or pull clothes;
  • replace soapy water with clean water, rinse with the same movements;
  • wash as many times as necessary to completely remove the cleaning agent;
  • The final rinse is carried out using fabric softener.

In the washing machine

Automatic washing is allowed if the label does not prohibit:

  • Having prepared the item according to the rules described above, folded it into a net, and put it in the drum;
  • the mode is selected depending on the model - “delicate”, “handmade”, “cashmere”, “silk”;
  • disable the spin and drying functions;
  • if it is possible to adjust the water temperature, set to 30°C;
  • Don't add too much detergent.

How to wash a cashmere sweater, cardigan or scarf in the washing machine

If you are wondering whether cashmere can be machine washed, then know that this method is considered an extreme procedure for such items. But sometimes, following several recommendations, it is allowed to be carried out. The following instructions will help you figure out how to wash a cashmere scarf, sweater, jacket or other item:

  1. Before loading, rip off the fur parts and turn the product inside out.
  2. Carefully roll it up and place it in a laundry bag.
  3. Set the “hand wash” or “delicate” mode.
  4. Turn off the “spin” and select a water temperature of 30 degrees.
  5. Pour a special detergent for cashmere into the compartment. Preferably only liquid.
  6. After the process, take out the product and lay it flat in the bathroom to drain excess liquid.

Nuances for certain types of things

Having studied the general rules for washing cashmere clothing, you should take into account the nuances and differences in cleaning certain categories of clothing.

Sweater, pullover, jacket

Beautiful cashmere blouses can easily be ruined by improper washing conditions, causing the item to become stiff, deformed or shrink. The algorithm of actions differs little from the general recommendations.

Hands

Hand wash is the preferred cleaning method:

  • the water should not be hard, too cold or exceed 30°C;

  • Washing powder will not work;
  • It is not recommended to pour detergent onto fabric; immerse things in a soapy solution;
  • When cleaning, do not twist or rub the material;
  • At the end of rinsing, do not wring out the jacket, but lay it out in the sink and press lightly with your palms so that excess moisture drips off;
  • then start drying.

In the typewriter

If the warning on the label does not prohibit it, pullovers can be machine processed:

  • select the “delicate”, “manual”, “cashmere” mode;
  • turn off spinning and drying;
  • do not use powder;
  • water no more than 30°C;
  • After washing, straighten the blouse and leave it in the drum to drain off excess moisture.

Scarf, shawl

It is recommended to wash the scarf and shawl only by hand, taking into account all the cleaning and rinsing rules. Spinning also does not involve twisting the item by hand. Just leave it to drain in the sink.

Coat

It is best to take such an expensive item as a coat to the dry cleaner . However, the washing procedure can be carried out at home if you follow the required algorithm, which is identical to the usual washing of cashmere items, observing the preliminary steps (removing fur, fastening buttons, etc.).

Not all coats are machine washable. If the clothing consists of 100% cashmere thread, then only hand cleaning is allowed. Automatic is possible only in the presence of impurities of other materials.

After washing, the coat, like sweaters, is not wrung out, but is left to drain in the bathtub, unfolded, since it is unlikely to fit in the sink. Drying is carried out strictly in a vertical position!

This article will tell you how to wash a cashmere coat.

Beret, hat

Hats, like scarves, are not machine washable. Gentle hand wash allowed.

After excess moisture is removed from the glass, the hat is dried depending on its shape:

  • berets are put on a plate;
  • the cap-hat is dried in a suitable sized jar, having previously wrapped it in soft material;
  • classic hats are laid out on a towel.

Manual

Learning how to wash items will save time and money that you would have otherwise spent on dry cleaning.

The first step is to pre-treat the stains. Launchress Old or Stubborn Soil Remover is an excellent product, also suitable for delicate fabrics and cashmere wool.

How to wash cashmere items by hand:

  1. Check the label on the clothing. Depending on the fiber blend, washing needs may vary.
  2. Use laundry detergent specifically designed for wool and silk.
  3. Fill the bathtub with warm water. Hot will cause the sweater to shrink, and cold will not remove dirt from the fibers as expected.
  4. Add some detergent or baby shampoo. Dissolve it well. Use less powder than indicated in the instructions, since excess is difficult to wash out and dirt remaining in the fiber will stick faster.
  5. It is not recommended to soak clothes. Wool swells due to moisture, so it is best not to leave the pullover in water for too long.
  6. Gently squeeze clothes under water to help them absorb more detergent. Don't twist things.
  7. If any areas need more attention, apply soap or shampoo directly to the affected area and massage gently. Cashmere is a thin knit, so refrain from rubbing. This will cause knots to appear on your clothes. In addition, the sweater may not regain its original shape after such a procedure. Never use bleach to remove stains; it can damage the wool fibers.
  8. Drain dirty water. Fill the bathtub with clean liquid. Rinse the product in warm water. Do not rinse under the tap as this will stretch the fabric. Continue changing the water until all the soap suds are washed out of your clothes.
  9. Squeeze out excess moisture. Do not twist the sweater, it will stretch. Gently press it against the tub. After removing excess moisture, lay the sweater on a towel and press down slightly. The towel will absorb the water.
  10. Place the clothing on a flat surface. Straighten the sweater and give it the desired shape.

Hand washing cashmere is not an easy task. But drying is also important.

Poorly dried cashmere is an ideal environment for moths and other insects. In addition, he things will emit an unpleasant odor.

Does cashmere shrink?

With proper care and washing, cashmere items will not shrink. However, such an unpleasant consequence occurs after:

  • wash in water above thirty degrees;
  • drying in a vertical position;
  • drying in the sun, radiator or in close proximity to the latter.

What to do if clothes shrink or stretch?

Reanimation of a damaged item is possible if the material has stretched no more than one size:

  1. Take water at exactly 30 degrees, neither hotter nor colder.
  2. Add the required amount of conditioner and stir.
  3. Leave the material to soak for ten minutes.
  4. Place the fabric between two terry towels and allow excess moisture to be absorbed.
  5. Place on a horizontal surface.
  6. Every half hour, stretch the item evenly and not too much.

If the clothes, on the contrary, have stretched, then you need to soak them for 10 minutes in 40-degree water, and then, without removing the liquid, leave them to dry.

Basic tips for care and use

  1. Cashmere products are best stored rolled up, individually packed in linen bags.
  2. Clothes made from this material are not worn constantly. It is better to take breaks between wears for at least 24 hours, and during this time lay it out as evenly as possible on a horizontal surface.
  3. Possible fresh stains are best washed off with cool running water, otherwise they may saturate the fabric and make it more difficult to get rid of.
  4. In dry, warm weather, regularly give your clothes air baths in the shade.
  5. Knitted sweaters can be hung on hangers with thick, soft shoulders. For example, inflatable.
  6. It is best to put a piece of cedar or plant sachets on a shelf with woolen items. Good aromatic infusions include lavender, thyme, dried citrus zest, cloves and rosemary.

Do not regret the efforts spent, they will definitely pay off many times over. For proper care, cashmere will literally “thank” you with its tenderness and attractive appearance, and the warm, enveloping fabric will emphasize all the advantages of your figure.

How to dry?

Drying is the final stage of cleaning cashmere items, which should be treated no less carefully than washing itself.

Main rules:

  1. After the water has drained, the material is placed between two thick terry towels and rolled into a roller, pressing lightly with your hands to absorb moisture. Leave this “structure” for a couple of hours.

  2. Lay a dry sheet or towel on a clean horizontal surface and place the cashmere on it.
  3. Carefully straighten out all the slightest folds, bends and creases, since ironing wool is prohibited.

Prohibitions on drying

The desire to quickly put on a freshly washed item is quite justified, but you should not rush the drying process.

It must pass naturally, so it is strictly prohibited:

  • dry things in a vertical position or on a clothesline;
  • place it on or near the battery;
  • contact of wet fabric with direct sunlight;
  • drying with a hair dryer, iron and other sources of artificial heat.

Features of washing cashmere items

Let's look at how to wash a cashmere sweater to prevent it from shrinking. Basic Rules:

  1. Do not use standard powder detergents or strong detergents containing bleaching particles and enzymes.
  2. It is not advisable to use stain removers and conditioners.
  3. The best option is a liquid detergent for delicate items or shampoo. Conditioner will replace hair rinse.

The label usually contains information about the rules for caring for the sweater - the likelihood of washing in a machine, by hand or only in dry cleaning, the optimal temperature for processing. Items made from pure cashmere are quite rare. Their price is very high and not everyone can afford such a purchase.

Usually there are other materials in the composition. In this case, the item can be placed in the machine if the tag does not indicate otherwise. But this does not need to be done very often.

How to remove pellets?

Usually cashmere items are cleared of pellets before washing, however, if the product is not selected correctly, they may appear again.

In this case, they are removed in exactly the same way as before washing: using a specialized machine or manicure scissors. This operation can only be performed on a dry item.

There are quite a lot of tips on the Internet on how to get rid of matted wool, but you should not forget that cashmere is a capricious thing, so aggressive removal methods, such as a toothbrush, sandpaper, razor, etc. will ruin the material.

You will find maximum useful information about washing clothes and various fabric products here.

Ironing

Manufacturers strictly prohibit ironing cashmere. Moreover, the material usually fits the body like a second skin. But if there is a need for ironing, remember a few recommendations:

  • Cashmere cannot be ironed closely. It is better to steam it from a short distance (2-3 cm);
  • the iron should be turned on to the lowest heat setting;
  • you need to influence the material only from the inside out.

Tip: Small folds can be briefly pressed several times with a lukewarm iron.

How to wash a woolen jacket

Products made from wool yarn can only be washed with products suitable for this purpose. Basic requirements for SMS:

Pay attention to the composition; it should not contain alkali or bleaching enzymes (if the product is colored). When choosing, preference is given to SMS for delicate fabrics

To wash a white woolen jacket, use products that do not contain harsh ingredients. If there is chlorine in the composition, the item will turn yellow. Sodasan is suitable for this purpose; the whitening effect is achieved thanks to oxygen. The product is suitable for hand and machine washing. It is better to wash a woolen sweater with gel rather than powder. It is less rinsable and the product becomes hard after cleaning. A liquid product intended for natural material removes dirt well and does not destroy the structure of wool. The gel does not foam, residues are easily removed with a single rinse. If there are stains on the sweater from foods, especially greasy ones, it is unlikely that you will be able to get rid of them with regular washing. Use a stain remover that can be used on woolen fabrics. Sonett is suitable for products of any color. The spray is applied to the problem area, after which foam forms, after 10 minutes. it is removed. It is recommended to wash a mohair sweater with Sodasan gel. Makes wool softer and prevents the formation of pellets

You can hand wash a wool sweater with regular shampoo.
