There are so many different aromas around us that our clothes are sometimes completely saturated with them. Next to people who smoke, things become saturated with smoke, animals also have a characteristic flair, and if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, where everything is fried and boiled, then the question arises of how to get rid of the smell of oil on clothes and other unpleasant aromas, because washing is not always easy helps remove them. Stubborn, persistent odors, of course, can be eliminated with something more pleasant and strong, for example, eau de toilette or using an anti-odor clothing spray. But you should understand that this will not solve the problem, since only you will feel the eau de toilette, and those around you will feel a completely different “palette”. A neutralizing spray is great only for quickly eliminating odor, but the odor that has become ingrained into the structure of the fabric must be removed in another way.

Ways to help you remove odor from clothes

How to remove the smell of sunflower, rancid or machine oil? All methods of removing unpleasant odors come down to one task - to decompose the substance that has become embedded in the fibers of the fabric, which is the source of odor.

The most common irritating odors include the following.

Mold, dampness

Clothes that smell of damp or mold should be thoroughly dried in the sun. Repeated washing and drying in the sun will help get rid of the smell. An alternative is freezing, ventilation in severe frost.

Important! If the fungus has eaten into the fibers of the fabric, then it will be much more difficult to correct the situation; you will have to use folk remedies: vinegar, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, table salt and another method - ascorbic acid dissolved in vodka.

To ensure that this problem doesn’t bother you anymore, use our tips to learn how to properly store things in your closet.

Strong-smelling food, such as fried fish

An effective home remedy is vinegar, a saturated saline solution. In addition to folk remedies, you can use special chemical compounds to remove odor.

Important! Dish detergents work well to remove the smell of fish. Lemon-scented products are best suited for this purpose.

Tobacco, cigarette smoke

The tars in cigarette smoke are very persistent, so not all cleaning compounds can remove them. It is better to use special drugs designed to remove nicotine.

You can use: laundry soap, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, but the most effective method is ammonia.

Sweat

Vinegar and citric acid can remove and actively eliminate the persistent odor of sweat. These light acids are capable of breaking down odorous enzymes and disinfecting tissue. Hydrogen peroxide also works well with organic material.

However, one of the problems with odor removal is the fat secreted from the sweat glands. Therefore, if the odor does not disappear for a long time, then you can use dishwashing detergent, combining it with other preparations.

Important! It is necessary not only to eliminate the consequences of the problem, but to fight its source. Find out useful information on this topic in the article “Causes of Excessive Sweating.”

Gasoline, diesel fuel

The process of removing an unpleasant odor comes down to allowing the gasoline to evaporate. In this case, long-term airing of clothes in the fresh air will help. Various adsorbents and folk substances that can absorb odors, such as soda, activated carbon or salt, can help with the problem.

However, traces of gasoline and diesel fuel retain the odor for the longest time, due to various additives and impurities. The problem of how to get rid of the smell of technical oil on clothes will be solved by purified Galosha gasoline. It will help remove any remaining impurities from the stain. After treatment, airing of things will be much more active.

Important! Do not wash clothes with the smell of gasoline or diesel fuel in a regular machine, as fuel residues can transfer to the metal and plastic parts of the device. And this destroys them. In addition, the odor from fuel can transfer to other products that will be washed in the machine.

Second hand

The cause of the characteristic pungent odor is aggressive and toxic formaldehyde, a potent substance - metal bromide. These preparations are used to sanitize things against mites and fungus.

The most effective ways to remove a disgusting odor are prolonged ventilation in the sun and a solution of ammonia, in which you need to keep things for at least 2-3 hours.

The amount of ammonia is determined by the size of the product: for T-shirts and T-shirts, 20 ml per 5 liters of water is enough, for larger items - 100 ml per 10 liters of water.

Important! For even more ways and recipes to solve this problem, see our special article “How to remove odor from second-hand clothes?”

Animals

Cat odor is extremely difficult to eliminate. The reason for the persistence of cat “scents” in urine is a special substance - uric acid, which crystallizes very quickly, does not dissolve in water, and is not affected by detergents.

Therefore, using ordinary washing powders in this case is useless. Use available means, for example, vinegar, which effectively removes odor from any surfaces, including shoes and clothes.

Important! If this behavior is not a one-time protest from your pet, be sure to review our publication on solving this problem. Click on the link “The cat shits on the bed, in the shoes - what to do?”

Adviсe:

  1. Do not try to neutralize gasoline odor with bleach or stain remover that contains chlorine. This may cause a chemical reaction that releases harmful fumes.
  2. If your clothes smell of gasoline, you should first take them out into the fresh air for ventilation, and then soak them in a solution of a high-quality detergent. Leave the items in the detergent solution for a day and then wash with conditioner. Dry your clothes in the fresh air.

Manual odor removal

Let's look at different options for removing odors from clothes for different fabrics.

Soda

Baking soda is a unique compound for removing various odors, including unpleasant ones. Baking soda can loosen and break down stagnant dirt and greasy stains. In dry form, the product perfectly adsorbs most odors and liquids, including: juices, fats, burning and smoke residues. It is also suitable for getting rid of the smell of oil on clothes.

Use baking soda as follows:

  1. Sprinkle the powder on top of the wet spot. After half an hour, wash the product.
  2. For soaking, prepare a thick soda solution: pour 1 liter of water into a saucepan and heat to 70-80 degrees over heat. Pour baking soda into the water, stirring constantly.
  3. Afterwards, fill the clothes with the solution. Soak things for at least half an hour.

Important! For machine washing, use baking soda and washing powder in a 1:2 ratio.

Salt

Table salt can destroy the source of odor in the most radical way. In addition, salt perfectly absorbs and adsorbs moisture. You can use the product to quickly get rid of odors and stains, and to get rid of the smell of oil on clothes when it has already thoroughly saturated the fabric.

We recommend using table salt as follows:

  • If you need to quickly absorb the stench from the fabric, sprinkle fine salt on the stain and wait 30 minutes. Wash the product with soap or in a washing machine. After washing, the salt will dissolve and come out of the fabric fibers, leaving no trace behind.
  • For natural fabrics (linen, silk, cotton), use a salt solution. Dissolve 1 tbsp in one glass of water. spoon of salt. Wipe problem areas with the solution.

Important! This method will help get rid of not only stains, but also odor.

  • For white fabrics, you can add 1 teaspoon of ammonia to the solution for effectiveness.
  • For knitted wool items, use a concentrated solution. To make it, put 3-4 tablespoons of salt in 1 liter of water. Stir the product thoroughly until completely dissolved and pour it onto your clothes. Leave the items to soak for 15 minutes (preferably 45 minutes), after which, rinse and dry the item.

Vinegar or citric acid

A 3% vinegar solution will help remove odor from clothes. A 9% solution is commercially available, but in order for the acid to have less effect on the fabric structure:

  1. Dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:3.
  2. Apply the prepared solution to problem areas of clothing using a damp cloth or spray bottle.
  3. After 5-10 minutes, wash the product with soap (laundry or antipyatin).

Important! If you decide to combine two ingredients - soda and vinegar, then in this tandem, the acid is applied last:

  • Apply baking soda concentrate (or dry powder) first.
  • After a while, pour in the vinegar solution, and then add the detergent.

Do not add baking soda and vinegar to the washing machine. This option is only suitable for open centrifugal machines, in which you can additionally foam and aerate the water. For automatic machines, use powders with oxygen beads for this purpose.

Ammonia

Purchase a 10% ammonia solution in water and use it as follows to remove stains and odors from clothing:

  1. To soak and spray things, dilute the product with water in a ratio of 1:100 (10 ml of ammonia per 1 liter of water). To remove odors from clothes and remove stains, 2 hours of soaking and subsequent washing is enough.

Important! Soak second-hand items in the solution for 4-6 hours.

  1. If you find a stain with an unpleasant odor on your suit, use the following mixture: 4 tbsp. spoons of ammonia, 1 tbsp. spoon of salt, 4 tbsp. spoons of water. Mix the ingredients and apply to the problem area using a handkerchief or cloth. Wipe the stain with the mixture and wash with warm water.

Important! A fur collar can be removed from the smell of sweat using purified gasoline or using a mixture consisting of the following components:

  • ammonia (10 parts);
  • salt (1 part);
  • water (100 parts).

Apply the mixture to the problem area and wipe away any dirt.

Hydrogen peroxide

The main value of hydrogen peroxide is its ability to actively decompose organic compounds. Hydroperite is a very active oxidizing agent. At home, it perfectly copes with sweat odors, blood stains, and removes mold. However, it cannot be used for natural wool and leather items.

Important! Before using hydrogen peroxide, test it first on an inconspicuous area of your clothing. This can be a piece of seam or a piece of sampler, which is often sewn into products made from natural fabrics.

Hydrogen peroxide dissolves perfectly in water to infinitely small proportions, but the effect of removing stains and odors will only be at a concentration of 0.3-0.75%:

  1. To prepare such a solution, add 100 grams of peroxide (3%) to 1 liter of water.
  2. Soak clothes and shoes in this solution to remove unpleasant odor.

Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen tolerate the initial concentration of the product well - 3%. Therefore, for quick and high-quality results:

  1. Apply the undiluted solution to the smelly area of clothing using a cotton swab.
  2. Add fresh mixture from time to time.
  3. It takes no more than 5 minutes to process the item in this way.

During the reaction, oxygen is released, which is an additional oxidizing agent and helps remove even old stains.

Important! Dishwashing detergent can enhance the effect of the treatment. The oxygen will be trapped in the detergent bubbles and will be able to attack the stain longer. If you don’t know how to remove the smell of feces from your child’s clothes, then use hydrogen peroxide along with detergent:

  • Apply undiluted solution to the problem area.
  • Leave for 5 minutes and then apply dishwashing detergent. As a result, both organic stains and odors are removed.
  • After treatment, wash the items as usual.

Laundry soap and Antipyatin

Of course, to remove stains and unpleasant odors, you can use “grandmother’s” method and wash things in a basin with laundry soap. This is a universal method, but it requires a lot of physical effort.

You can use laundry soap or “Antipyatin” to soak products:

  1. Wet your clothes and rub them with soap until foam forms.
  2. Rub the cloth, add water.
  3. Remember your clothes well, set them aside for half an hour. During this time, the soap will penetrate the fabric fibers and bind all the dirt and odor residues.
  4. Rinse the product in running water.
  5. Wash your clothes in the machine.
  6. If the product does not help the first time, then repeat the soaking procedure again.

Important! To make the washing effect more productive, clothes can be boiled in a soapy solution. Use dark soap - it contains more alkali. Grate the soap and add to the water. The solution should be as thick as possible.

Industrial cleaners

In the assortment of household chemicals aimed at cleaning marks of various nature from items of clothing, you can choose an effective option.

Beckmann

An important criterion is the type of textile. The type of pollutant and the degree of stain resistance are taken into account. Types of recommended cleaners:

  1. AXEL-6. Aerosol Oil & Grease Remover with a universal spectrum of action against oil stains. Spray onto a soft piece of cloth and rub off the oily print towards the center. After treatment, the sponge is moistened with detergent and the surface is wiped.
  2. Oil Stain Remover. Refers to environmentally friendly products with a citrus base. Effectively cleans technical oily types. After applying to the stain, leave the composition until completely dry for about 8 hours. The resulting powder is removed with a brush.
  3. Beckmann. This series of stain removers offers a special type for oil stains. It is recommended to use it for products that can be washed after treatment. It is also practiced to clean items from the group of outerwear that are undesirable to wash frequently. Suitable for colored items. Not for use on skin.
  4. Gold Oxi from the line Thanks to its thick consistency, it is easily distributed over the fabric. Does not require a long time, removing even large oil deposits in a few minutes. Safely cleans colored and white textiles.

When working, ensure ventilation of the room, protect hands with gloves.

Oily stains appear quite often on different types of textiles. It is easier to deal with them in the first moments after their appearance, since many available substances absorb the oil.

Do not despair if you notice already dried marks or traces from varieties that are difficult to breed. Among the proven methods, it is possible to select the most effective and safe ones.

Machine washable

In many cases, regular detergent and a suitable washing cycle can remove stains and remove odors from clothes. Determine the maximum permissible temperature for the product and set all the necessary parameters in the machine settings, including: soaking, the use of additional products, for example, bleaches and conditioners. Use an additional rinse to better “wash out” unpleasant odors and detergents.

Important! Chlorine- and oxygen-containing bleach compositions cope with many types of stains and remove odors perfectly, but they contain components that are aggressive to the fabric and destroy the fibers and structure of the material. Use bleach only according to the instructions and not regularly to protect the item from permanent damage.

Adviсe:

  • To get rid of unpleasant odors from clothes, add 0.5 cups of white vinegar and 0.5 cups of borax (large colorless crystals) to the machine instead of powder.
  • Instead of powder, use baking soda (1 cup). Wash at the highest temperature allowed for the fabric. This will help remove the smell completely.
  • To remove the smell of sweat from clothes, rinse things in Lenora or Lenora concentrate. Leave freshly squeezed clothes in the Lenora water solution for 15 minutes. Afterwards, wring out the items and hang them in the fresh air. Clothes will delight you not only with cleanliness and freshness, but also with softness.

Important! If after bleaching, you do not know how to remove the smell of whiteness from clothes, then rinse them in water with the addition of vinegar, which neutralizes all odors. Dry the product in a well-ventilated area or in the fresh air.

How to remove old machine oil stains

In addition to the standard method using laundry soap, you can try removing the stain with mustard powder:

  1. 2 tbsp. l. dilute with water.
  2. Apply the mixture to the stain.
  3. Cover with a damp cloth.
  4. Leave for 1-2 hours.
  5. Remove excess with a knife.
  6. Machine wash.

The result will largely depend on the brand and thickness of the oil. If the effectiveness is insufficient, it is recommended to resort to another method listed above.

Powder for washing clothes

Detergents are highly active in converting various fats into water-soluble compounds. The key factor in this case is the water temperature. The higher it is, the better the result. For cleaning, it is advisable to use the harshest formulations without softening additives. Sometimes it may take several treatments, but eventually the stain will disappear.

Before the main wash, it is advisable to prepare a paste of powder and boiling water. After cooling slightly, moisten the dirty area with water and rub the mixture thoroughly. For greater efficiency, you can put the item in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, after putting it in a bag. The main thing is to make sure that there are no metal elements. After the procedure, a main wash will be required to completely dissolve the stain.

Chalk and ironing

The combination of intense heating and the absorbency of chalk, although it will not get rid of machine oil completely, will make further processing easier.

Instructions:

  1. Grind the chalk into powder.
  2. Place a clean, absorbent rag under the oil mark.
  3. Dust with chalk.
  4. Cover the top with a rag.
  5. Walk with the tip of a hot iron.

After getting rid of the oil as much as possible, continue processing in the form of washing and several soakings if necessary.

Any oil softens well when exposed to high temperatures and is easily absorbed into other fabrics. But at the same time, the area of spot distribution often also increases. Therefore, the standard advice is to move from the edges to the center.

Use of solvents

To remove stains you need to take a small container:

  1. Pour solvent into it.
  2. Immerse the stained area.
  3. After this, rinse thoroughly in water, dry and repeat the treatment 3-5 times.
  4. Then wash the item. If traces are still present, repeat the procedure from the beginning.

Advice: in order not to discolor the item, you should first check the effect of the solvent on the material; to do this, apply a small amount in an inconspicuous place and wait about 15 minutes.

Kerosene

You need to treat the stain with the liquid, moving from the edges to the central zone. Kerosene always leaves stains, so subsequent washing is indispensable.

How to remove musty smell from clothes?

The characteristic musty “aroma” appears after long and improper storage of clothes in the closet. There may be several reasons:

  • Linen is stored unwashed.
  • There is no regular ventilation.
  • The linen was put in the closet damp and not cooled immediately after ironing.
  • Clothes are stored together with dirty laundry.

Regular washing will not cope with mustiness, so use the following recommendations:

  1. Before washing, soak your clothes in water and vinegar. Instead of vinegar, you can add soda to the water.
  2. If it is not possible to do laundry, then put scented napkins in the closet. Place them among your things.
  3. Place a glass jar of coffee beans in your closet. The persistent and pleasant aroma of coffee will cope with any mustiness.
  4. Add a few drops of essential oil to the vodka. Leave to infuse for a day. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and treat the items. Vodka will kill microbes that are the source of the odor. After treatment, dry and ventilate the clothes.

How to remove odor from clothes without washing?

If the item cannot be washed, then use the following effective methods for removing ointment:

  • If time is of the essence and clothes are not needed at the moment, then wrap them in a sheet of newspaper and leave them for a day or two. Paper absorbs odors perfectly. If the item is bulky, fill it with newspaper from the inside. Leave it on for a few days. Most of the amber will be absorbed by the paper.

Important! You can drop a few drops of essential oil on the newspaper. The pleasant and fresh aroma of lemon, mint and eucalyptus oil will relieve mustiness from clothes.

  • Fur items cannot be washed, so to clean them, sprinkle starch on the fur. Leave the product for half an hour and then shake off.
  • Air your clothes in the sun. The sun's rays can destroy chemicals that cause unpleasant odors.
  • Anti-odor sprays for clothes do an excellent job of eliminating unpleasant “odors.” The range of funds is large. They not only remove unpleasant odors, but also leave a subtle aroma after treatment. Spray the entire length of the clothing thoroughly.

Important! Only dry cleaning specialists can effectively get rid of unpleasant odors on clothes. They are the ones who know exactly which chemical compounds should be used in certain cases. So, if the item is exclusive and very dear to you, then it is better to entrust its fate to professionals.
