Particular attention to fabrics

If you need to sew Greek curtains, you need to give preference to light, exclusively natural fabrics. Materials that are most often used in production to create such products:

  1. Bleached linen.
  2. Jute has a very dense structure.
  3. Brilliant white cotton.
  4. Matting.
  5. Bamboo.

These are environmentally friendly, healthy fabrics that have proven themselves in use. They are wear-resistant, durable, and can be washed many times.

Moreover, linen or cotton with jute perfectly protects windows, creating an obstacle to the penetration of bright rays of the sun and closing the room from prying eyes in the evening and at night.

Main stages of work

It is necessary to calculate the amount of fabric for sewing. To do this, the window dimensions are doubled, a few centimeters are added to the seam allowance, and then the number is multiplied by the number of windows.

When sewing curtains individually on your own machine, it is better to make a double-sided model. This will allow you to reliably hide the untreated sides.

Color preferences

Greek motifs mean natural. In addition, such curtains are always with ornaments. Shades of ocher, or sandy beach, sea colors, delicate olive tones, cream, peach, soft pink, beige, milky.

Black and white options are very popular. Classic antique combination: black ornament on a white background. In other cases, as a rule, contrasting combinations of tones are chosen. The drawing is done in one shade, the other serves as a contrasting background for it.

All of the above shades are welcome in the Greek style of window drapes. These are light colors combined with an antique pattern, which is made in an exquisite design, in complete symmetry - these are the main distinctive features of Greek compositions. These curtains are universal and suitable for draping windows in any room.

Mounting methods

Classic curtains can be attached to a curtain rod or mounted on a fishing line (if it can support the weight of the canvas).

The mechanism for roller blinds is mounted in a special box. It can be installed both above the window opening and on the window frame itself. The box is mounted on the wall using self-tapping screws, drilling holes for them.

On the window sashes, light roller curtains (more precisely, their mechanism) are secured using a spring bracket. This option is used mainly for opening curtains.

The most common ornaments

The Greeks are very fond of the marine theme, floral patterns, images of ancient gods, columns, majestic buildings and architectural structures.

That is why the main motifs of the designs on Greek canvases for draping windows are the “Cretan wave”, “palmettes”, and images of vases in the original Greek style.

But the most popular is the meander. This is a line broken symmetrically at a right angle. It forms the edge of the curtain vertically or horizontally.

Manufacturing process

Now let's look at how to make a Greek curtain? You need to measure the window frame, add 9-10 cm to the length and 3-4 cm to the width, making allowances, and cut out two panels of fabric using these dimensions.

We sew the parts of the pattern from the inside out, and leave one side for now - turn the future curtain through it and then sew it up. Next, you should bend the strip to the non-front side and make a pocket for fastening: 3 cm at the top, 1.5 cm at the bottom, and hem it.

We screw two rings of screws into the upper pocket, and two on the back side.

To be able to roll up the curtain, cords are needed. Measure three lengths of the product and cut it - this is one cord, then we make another one plus half the length of the curtain.

Pass the cords through the rings on the top bar, with the one that is longer attached to the first ring.

Next, you need to run the cords along the wrong side of the curtain and thread them into the rings. Another ring is attached to the side and both cords are threaded through it.

To fix the curtain in the upper position, you need to screw another screw into the ring at the bottom of the window to tie the cord to it.

Roller blinds

These draperies are made from dense natural fabric impregnated with a specialized protective compound. Thanks to him, the curtains will not get dirty or deform for many years. Therefore, designers recommend using them in the kitchen, just like vertical or horizontal blinds.

Roller shutters have different capacity. If the room's windows face the south, it is worth purchasing very dense canvases with a light transmission value of no more than 5-10%. Roller curtains are appropriate to combine with tulle and light curtains. Of course, all draperies must be made in the same style and color scheme.

Living room

A spacious and bright room for meeting guests will create a pleasant mood when using textiles made from natural fabrics: linen, wool, jute or burlap, coarse cloth.

Natural colors have a positive effect on mood and help you relax. The products use shades of sea wave, sand, and olive fruits.

A discreet and at the same time elegant cut complements the interior, and does not draw all attention to itself.

In such an atmosphere it is pleasant to sit with a cup of tea or while away the evening playing board games.

For which interiors are Greek ornaments most suitable?

Designers unanimously declare: for all styles, without exception. Such draperies look especially chic in classic interiors, complemented by elements of Greek style.

“Loft”, “modern” and even “eclecticism” will not lose at all if you decorate the windows of a room in one of the above styles exclusively with antique motifs. Indeed, in the times of Hellas, as Greece was called in ancient times, people preferred to hang such curtains even in practically unequipped rooms.

Application

Blinds and shutters are often used in Greece to protect against hot heat. For curtains, linen, thick jute or bleached cotton are used.

For each room you should choose your own style and color of curtains.

Designers often use two opposite shades in their solutions to effectively decorate window openings in residential premises, as well as in large halls where holidays and events are held to add solemnity and luxury.

Combinations of Greek curtains

It is not necessary to drape the window exclusively with curtains with antique motifs. If you like these and happen to purchase Greek curtains, it is advisable to complement them with classic plain tulle.

A neutral element will only emphasize the beauty and sophistication of antique patterns. Another trend is a mesh or thread curtain to match the Greek curtains. In color, it can completely repeat the range of curtains, but it is worth purchasing a contrasting one - light or dark drapery.

Kitchen

It is better to choose Greek curtains for the kitchen from roller or folded Greco-Roman models.

Floral ornament will fit perfectly into the dining area. It is also appropriate to use a calm beige palette of cream or sand color.

Care instructions

Caring for Greek curtains depends on the material from which they are made, and in each specific case it is worth carefully studying the advice from the manufacturer. We will provide only general recommendations.

  • It is better to wash products by hand, or at least in the gentle mode of the washing machine.
  • The temperature should not exceed 30-40oC.
  • Use only mild detergents without bleaches.
  • The curtains are not wrung out, but are allowed to drain on their own.
  • Dry items hanging.
  • Bamboo curtains can be wiped with a damp cloth without using detergents.

Handwash

The removed fabric is soaked for about an hour in lukewarm water with a liquid detergent previously diluted in it. The water temperature should not exceed 40 °C, otherwise the fabric may fade or shrink. The detergent should be for delicate washing and without abrasive additives.

Roman blinds cannot be bleached, let alone boiled. Places of heavy dirt can be lightly rubbed with a soft sponge without stretching the fabric. If necessary, you can use a natural stain remover.

At the end of washing, rinse the curtain several times in cool water. To prevent streaks from appearing after drying, this must be done until you are sure that there is no detergent left on the fabric and the water remaining after rinsing is absolutely clean.

Peculiarities

Curtains in the Greek style stand out from the crowd of window accessories. They are distinguished by strict and regular lines, ideal for hot summer weather. These models have distinctive features:

  • simplicity and elegance;
  • environmental friendliness - natural fabrics, lightweight, freely allowing fresh air to pass through, at the same time dense and opaque, reliably protecting from ultraviolet radiation;
  • characteristic ornament - obligatory use of an antique design;
  • symmetry - symmetrical arrangement and placement of parts;
  • versatility - such models adapt to any interior and will suit any room;
  • ease of sewing - no patterns, you just need to measure the fabric, cut and process the seams. Possibility of sewing at home without special skills;
  • easy care – the curtain can be quickly removed and washed and does not require special care.

Dry cleaning

Roman fabrics made from natural materials (bamboo, jute, eucalyptus) quickly deteriorate from contact with water, so they cannot be washed. Only the dry cleaning method is suitable for them.

In this case, there is no need to remove the curtain from the cornice. It is enough to clean it with a vacuum cleaner, putting a linen bag over the nozzle. This will prevent the fabric from being pulled into the pipe and becoming jammed.

You can also gently clean the canvas with a soft-bristled brush using shaking movements, without pressing.

If you find stains on Roman curtains made from natural materials, contact your dry cleaner. Do not experiment, otherwise you may ruin the curtains. Trust the professionals.
