Camel wool was popular in the East several centuries ago. Now it is used for sewing bedding, clothing, and warm clothes. A camel wool blanket has healing properties. It is recommended to use it if there are problems with the joints, rheumatism is diagnosed. The fibers of the material are soft, repel dirt, allow air to circulate freely, warm well, and prevent overheating.

What is a camel hair pillow?
The source of raw materials is the Bactrian camel. For the production of pillows, downy undercoat is used; its fibers are very thin and have optimal consumer properties. The material is usually obtained by shearing or during the period when the animal sheds its fur. The raw materials are kept in a special solution to soften and achieve the desired color, and to destroy microorganisms.

What's inside a camel hair pillow. The only thing is that the filler is usually located in an additional inner case.
Since a lot of organic material is required, a base of synthetic filler or bird down is added to the products. Camel hair is placed around it; the inner layer increases the elasticity of the product.
Tips for purchasing camel wool products
Products made from camel wool can have an open structure, that is, fur or woven. With closed (covered, quilted).
Pay attention to camel wool filler if the blanket has a closed structure. The fabric must be of natural origin. Otherwise, the product will lose its advantages, lose its ability to thermoregulate, will not allow air to pass through, and will lose its hygroscopicity. The best fillers are: satin, teak, silk. The stitches should be spaced at a distance of 10 to 20 cm. The pile should not stick out from the fabric or be pulled out.
If the product has an open structure, then you need to look at the quality of the stitches. The binding must be stitched well. The top of the fur should have a uniform and smooth structure. If after contact with the blanket fibers remain on your hands, then it is better to refuse the purchase.
Types of tailoring
Based on density, there are 4 types of camel wool blankets:
- light 200-220 g/m2;
- with a density of 220 to 280 g/m2, suitable for rooms with good heating;
- 300-350 g/m2, a blanket that is suitable for any season except summer.
The warmest blanket has a density of 420 g/m2.
There are 3 groups of blankets based on the type of attachment of the filling to the base:
- Quilted. It is considered the most unreliable mount. Over time, the fibers begin to migrate and roll off. Attractiveness and consumer properties are lost.
- Pattern stitch. Much more reliable than the previous group. Looks attractive in the interior. But, the abundance of holes from the needle sooner or later leads to the fact that the fibers are knocked out from under the fabric.
- Cassette firmware. The most reliable firmware, but such blankets are expensive.
The latest type of firmware reduces the risk of lumps to almost zero.
Range of sizes
Pillows filled with camel hair are sewn in standard sizes:
- 40Х60;
- 60X60;
- 50X70;
- 70X70.
Weight depends on size. The first three pillows weigh between 0.45 kg and 0.6 kg. The largest are from 1 to 1.5 kg.
In the classic version, manufacturers offer blankets in sizes from 110X140 to 200X220.
The best manufacturers
Among the manufacturers of blankets with closed filling are:
- Verossa produces all-season blankets, the base on them does not come off;
- SN-TEXTILE “SUGAR” is lightweight and low cost. Helps relieve muscle tension;
- "Don textiles". Blankets have a hollow structure and maintain a constant temperature;
- Goldtex. Filler – teak. The product is thin and warm.
Popular brands of products with open filler:
- Magicwool. The products are expensive, but have a long service life;
- KAIRO, a company that produces blankets with 100% camel hair;
- "Doctor Plaid". The manufacturer is loyal to pricing. But, according to user reviews, blankets are not suitable for severe cold weather.
- Billerbeck. An ideal choice for cold winters.
Among the pillow manufacturers we can highlight: Dargez, Verossa, Alvitek.
How it feels
Typical model with a combination of camel hair and synthetic fiber.
A camel wool pillow is not as fluffy as its sheep counterpart. When you lie down on it, it feels soft, not too high. A camel pillow is lighter than a sheep pillow and has a denser structure. From its appearance one cannot say that it can be compared with the weight of bird fluff.
Sometimes pillows made of camel hair feel prickly; this effect is observed when the raw material was collected from an old animal or was poorly processed and was not placed in an additional cover.
Camel hair contains lanolin, which is similar to sebum. It has a softening effect and has a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin. Lanolin has an antiseptic effect, making breathing easier during sleep. The camel pillow is surprisingly warm; in winter it warms, but in sultry heat it does not accumulate heat.
It always feels dry due to the fact that wool perfectly absorbs moisture and immediately evaporates it without accumulating inside. The pillow is not electrified and does not attract dust.
The only thing is that it weakly supports the head and neck during rest. Gradually, the model wrinkles, loses its shape and feels less soft.
Who exactly suits and who doesn’t suit
Camel pillows have good performance and are popular among consumers. But they are not recommended for use by everyone. Let's consider who will still have to refuse to purchase models with organic filler:
- For allergy sufferers . Camel hair contains lanolin and carotene, which are a breeding ground for microorganisms. Waste products cause allergic reactions. It is recommended to have the pillows dry cleaned or promptly replace them with new models. Allergies to camel hair are not common, so the pillows can be used by many people, even small children.
- If you have pain in the neck and spine . Camel pillows do not provide reliable support and do not have orthopedic properties. Those who have manifestations of osteochondrosis and frequent headaches should avoid purchasing this accessory. A camel hair pillow will only aggravate the condition and affect your daily well-being.
Who is suitable for camel down pillows?
Since Bactrian fluff does not often cause allergies, products made from it are recommended for use by people of all ages and health conditions. Both a person of retirement age and a small preschooler will feel comfortable resting on such bedding.
Camel wool cannot be dyed, so products made from it are light brown or dirty beige. This is a big plus, since the buyer is protected from additional chemical treatment of the product during the dyeing process.
You should immediately remove the pillow if, after interacting with it, signs of an allergy are discovered. They indicate that a person has personal intolerance and the pillow can “cause” coughing, tearing, an asthma attack, and skin rashes.
The soft pillow does not have any special orthopedic properties, so people suffering from back and neck diseases should consult an orthopedic doctor before using it.
Customer reviews: advantages and disadvantages
- Thermoregulation. They retain heat well and protect from overheating in hot weather;
- Hygroscopicity. They do not retain moisture, quickly absorb and evaporate;
- Air exchange. Air circulates freely between the fibers;
- Light weight. Pillows made of sheep wool are 2 times lighter;
- Antistatic effect. Not electrified;
- The service life is 3-5 years with careful care.
- Gradually they fall off and lose their shape;
- Sometimes owners in reviews note prickliness, probably the wool was poorly processed;
- Not suitable for those who are allergic to wool;
- Some models are too expensive;
- They require gentle and complex care.
How long will it last?
With proper care, bedding made from Bactrian wool lasts at least five years. To ensure that this period does not shorten, but increases, it is necessary to dry the pillow once every four to five months in a ventilated area on a sunny day. Harmful microorganisms may develop in natural wool during use. Such care will allow for high-quality disinfection of the product without the use of chemicals.
At home, the pillow is washed by hand twice a year. The water temperature should not exceed 30 C, since in boiling water the structure of the wool fibers is disrupted and the filler “falls off”. Chemical and dry reading of products is allowed.
The obvious disadvantages of products made from Bactrian wool include their high cost. But when it comes to a pillow that will provide a comfortable night's rest for more than 5 years, saving is not appropriate.

Handwash
It is more preferable for products with natural filler. It is recommended to wash in the following order:
- Prepare warm water no more than 30°C.
- Add liquid gel coat treatment.
- Soak the pillow in the solution for 1-2 hours.
- Rinse in clean and warm water.
- Without twisting, press with longitudinal movements.
- Place on a horizontal surface to dry.
Avoid direct sunlight.
Machine washable
Set the "Wool" or "Delicate" mode. Fill the compartment with liquid and turn off “Spin”. Immerse the pillow and throw in silicone balls, they will reduce the risk of deformation of the shape. After washing, rinse the product thoroughly and wring it out with your hands. Dry horizontally only.
When rinsing, use conditioner to soften the wool fibers.
Rules of care
Blankets made of camel wool have quite a few advantages of blankets made of camel wool, but the main disadvantage is the difficulty of care. It is recommended to use professional dry cleaning services. At home, you can knock out your own pillow and blanket. You can dry and ventilate pillows and blankets in the open air, but where there is no direct sunlight.
As a last resort, if the manufacturer has indicated this option on the label, the bedding can be washed. But this is further confirmation that the material is mixed. The composition contains synthetic additives.
You can machine wash a camel wool blanket only at 30°C, no higher. Wool does not tolerate exposure to hot water well and becomes crumpled. For washing, only gentle detergents may be used. It is best to use biodegradable powders or gels that dissolve quickly in water and rinse well.
Important! It is prohibited to use stain removers containing chlorine for local cleaning. Chlorine destroys natural fibers.
It is necessary to dry in a straightened form, preferably in the open air. Do not dry on heating or heating devices, especially open ones.
Periodically, pillows and blankets made from camel wool must be ventilated, as dust mites can grow in it, which can cause an allergic reaction.
It is prohibited to store items made of camel wool in vacuum bags or plastic bags. A damp item will begin to rot and deteriorate. For long-term storage, it is recommended to use cotton bags.

Features of choice
When choosing, in addition to the filler and size, it is necessary to take into account the degree of rigidity and height. And also the following factors:
- age,
- gender,
- shoulder width (If the shoulder length is up to 15 cm, then the height should be 10 cm, if from 15 to 20 cm, then the height of the product is 12 cm, if more than 20 cm, then 14 cm).
Your favorite sleeping position is also important:
- height 8-10 cm is suitable for sleeping on your back,
- 10-13 cm – on the side,
- 6-8 cm for sleeping on your stomach.
There is also a general rule: the softer the mattress, the lower the pillow.
