There is no more popular clothing in the world than jeans, and no more versatile than black jeans. This is a basic wardrobe item that is appropriate to wear in any situation.

Over time, gray abrasions appear on the knees and folds. They spoil the appearance of the thing.

You can dye your jeans black using inexpensive simple dyes. They do this at home, and no special skills or equipment are needed.

Powder paints

The choice of powder formulations is huge. They are easy to use and highly durable. Price category from 20 rubles per package.

Cheap options fit perfectly on the fabric and can withstand repeated washings; the only negative is the meager choice of palette.

Manufacturers of more expensive modern dyes have eliminated this shortcoming, and we can afford bright shades.

Why do jeans dye when they are worn, do they dye their legs and clothes?

Many well-known companies insist that jeans must be dyed after purchase. This is due to the use of natural dyes. Manufacturers say that after a few washes and the first few times you wear your jeans, you'll have to deal with the marks. Therefore, just the first time you go out in new jeans, wear underwear that you don’t mind and don’t undress in public. Blue legs and panties are often seen.

It is worth noting that a large amount of dye also causes jeans to stain and fade. But don't be upset. After two washes, your trousers will stop fading. Try to wear dark blouses and underwear at first. This will prevent staining.

Tools for dyeing jeans

Let's prepare the “tools” before painting. We will need:

  • Jeans (be sure to wash them in advance without conditioner and dry them),
  • Dye,
  • Enameled deep container (pan, bucket, basin);
  • Gloves. A chemical burn has never made anyone happy;
  • Respirator. It is needed to avoid inhaling toxic fumes;
  • Table salt, baking soda;
  • Table vinegar.

Read the instructions for use carefully!

Changing the color of jeans with paint

Dissolve a packet of coloring powder in 0.5 liters of water, in a separate container (glass, ceramics) with warm water, stir thoroughly.

Strain the solution. To do this, you can use: a piece of old organza, tulle, gauze, cotton wool, which will hold undissolved particles.

Place clothes, prepared solution in a large saucepan and add water so that the liquid covers the pants.

Add salt or soda if the instructions require it. Bring to a boil and keep on fire for an hour.

Don't forget to stir and turn over. Otherwise the color will lie unevenly.

Leave the jeans to cool in the dye. Wash in warm, then cold water.

We fix the result with vinegar for at least 30 minutes. Fixative: vinegar 9% (3 tbsp per 1 liter of water) or vinegar essence 70% (2 tbsp per 1 liter of water).

Coloring rules

To get an even color and not spoil the surrounding area and the skin of your hands with paint, follow these recommendations:

  • Before use, be sure to read the instructions for the coloring agent;
  • study the composition of the fabric. It will dye evenly only if it contains more than 80% cotton. If 30-50% is synthetic, it will leave marks in the form of thin stripes;
  • Keep in mind that after drying the product becomes much lighter;
  • artificial fabrics can only be painted with special paint for synthetics;
  • Use protection to prevent the coloring agent from getting on the furniture or floor. To do this, cover the treatment area with thick plastic film or paper;
  • be prepared for the fact that you will have to dye your jeans a second, and even a third time;
  • Do not forget about hand protection, because it is very difficult to wash the skin of some products, while others, for example, whiteness, are quite aggressive. Therefore, it is best to carry out staining with rubber gloves;
  • Make sure you do not have an allergic reaction to the product you are using.

How the jeans will look after dyeing depends on several factors:

  • Original color. The easiest way is to return the shade to a faded product. If you want to dye white jeans black, most likely, this will not work: the dye will make the fabric dark gray;
  • Dye. It is important to choose products that match the color of your jeans: dyes for black fabrics are not suitable for white ones, and vice versa.

Painting in the washing machine

The second way is to use a washing machine.

  • Prepare the coloring solution as in the previous version;
  • Place jeans in washing machine;
  • Pour the paint into the air conditioner compartment, or better yet, into the drum of the machine;
  • Set the longest washing mode (t not lower than 90℃);
  • Rinse the painted item in clean water;
  • Fix the color with vinegar;
  • We wash jeans as usual (t no higher than 40℃).

Application of Rit Dye Black

Rit Dye can restore the original shade to black jeans. It is produced in the USA in different shades: dark green, denim blue, burgundy, purple, yellow, black and others.

The dye comes in both powder and liquid, and it doesn't matter which one you decide to use.

You will need: 1 sachet of Rit Dye black or half a bottle, a bucket, 11 liters of water, gloves, an old wooden spoon, Pervol or other detergent that does not contain bleach.

How to dye jeans - step by step instructions:

  1. Fill a bucket with 11 liters of hot water.
  2. Pour half a bottle of black dye into the water; if you decide to use a powdered product, you will need to pour out the entire contents of the bag. To get a rich shade, you should dye black jeans with double the amount of dye.
  3. Stir Rit Dye until it is well dissolved in water.
  4. Slowly submerge the jeans into the bucket.
  5. Use a wooden spoon to stir things together, then leave for an hour.
  6. Then rinse the clothes in cold water and put them in the washing machine.

While the black jeans are in the dye, stir them every 10 minutes to avoid darkened areas on the fabric.

Dry dyed clothes in the shade. If dried in the sun, spots may appear.

Where to dye jeans?

Enameled dishes, glass, and ceramic are suitable. In principle, at home you can use a bathtub or plastic buckets, but then you will have to wash them for a long time.

We repeat the same procedure with potassium permanganate. Such partial coloring looks beautiful on light-colored items. The shade depends on the concentration of manganese in the water (from pale pink to dark purple).

This coloring lasts a long time on denim items and looks impressive for mere pennies!

What to remember

  1. Add vinegar and salt. Regardless of the composition of the paint, after the dyeing process itself, it is worth holding the product in water to which vinegar and salt have been added.
  2. Protect your hands. It is better to work with gloves and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
  3. Turn your pants inside out. When dyeing jeans, turn them inside out.
  4. Do not use bleach. Dyed jeans should not be washed with bleach in the future.
  5. Consider the type of fabric. Pay attention to what fabric the clothes are made of. The paint must be matched to the type of material, otherwise the product will deteriorate.
