How to repair a hole in a down jacket at home

When replenishing their autumn-winter wardrobe of outerwear, of course, many expect that warm jackets will serve for a long time and faithfully, saving the owner from the autumn chill, winter cold and pre-spring dampness. This will happen if you treat things carefully and carefully. And do not belong to the category of smokers who tend to light up in any place and clothing if suddenly a nicotine hunger strikes.

Excitedly smoking the latest creation of the tobacco industry, cigarette lovers risk not only their health and the well-being of those around them. Their belongings are also at risk. An immediate danger to clothing arises if you smoke in the wind, when the smallest particles of a smoldering cigarette fall on jackets and down jackets, leaving holes in this place. When you burn through your jacket with a cigarette, what should you do: get upset and rush to the store for a new one, so that you can safely burn it through too? Or is there a better way?

If you know a few tricks, you can easily repair a cigarette-burned jacket.

Combating defects in bolognese products

Many consumers probably remember the time when bologna jackets were at the height of popularity. For their manufacture, a special nylon fabric is used, which includes a unique waterproof coating. But even in the modern world, such products are very popular, because they are affordable for every category of consumer, and also protect well from piercing wind and rain in bad weather.

Despite significant advantages, such jackets have a main drawback - the relatively low strength of the material. One wrong move, and the jacket can easily be damaged due to mechanical or chemical effects. As practice shows, it is precisely such holes that are much more difficult to repair accurately. Before sewing up a Bolognese jacket, you need to assess the nature of the damage and the quality of the product itself.

Experts say that to eliminate a burn, rupture or cut, you must adhere to several rules:

  • At the first stage, you need to choose the right adhesive composition for repairing outerwear. To do this, you should carefully study the label located on the inner lining of the jacket. It is best if the selected glue is tested on a small area of clothing that is invisible to prying eyes. Experts say that glue that contains a special ester of acetic acid and rubber has good properties. If such an option is simply not at hand, then you can give your preference to “Moment” glue.
  • Now it's time to carefully cut the patch to fit the cut. A small piece of fabric made of rubberized material or bologna will look most organic and attractive. It is worth noting that the color of the patch and the jacket itself must match.
  • The inside of the product must be thoroughly wiped with a cotton pad, which must be pre-moistened in acetone. After these manipulations, the jacket should lie for several minutes.
  • At this stage, you need to apply glue to the patch (all manipulations must comply with the instructions). Be sure to wait a few minutes.
  • Gradually glue a piece of fabric on the wrong side. To record the result, you need to place a small press on the treated area, the weight of which should be at least 2 kg. Wait 3 hours.
  • There are situations when from the front side the gap looks very sloppy, then this place can be decorated with an appliqué of a suitable size and color.

It is also worth considering that some experts prefer to use a shorter and more reliable method of dealing with holes in jackets. The process itself consists of three mandatory steps:

  1. You can quickly and efficiently repair a torn item using two patches. First of all, you need to trim the edges of the hole with ordinary sharp scissors.
  2. Preparing bologna patches. It is worth noting that the piece of material that will be attached to the inside must be larger in diameter than the hole itself. But the front patch must exactly match in diameter.
  3. All that remains is to tape the damaged areas on the jacket to hide the damaged areas. After the manipulations have been performed, it is imperative to evaluate the result of the work done. If you are satisfied with it, then you need to cover the jacket with a fabric made of natural material (cotton, linen) and carefully iron it.

If it is not possible to hide defects with improvised means, then it is best to contact a specialized studio.

In this case, payment for these services will be required. Indicate the amount of income not less than the subsistence minimum. In order to increase the efficiency of its operation, the sites are divided into special categories and types of permissible use.

Restoring your favorite down jacket

Many people are familiar with the situation when they need to properly repair a burnt hole in a jacket. Dealing with this situation is quite simple, but initially you need to prepare all the necessary materials:

  • Pieces of fabric in the same color as the jacket.
  • Non-woven tapes.
  • Iron.
  • Gauze.

High-quality tapes based on dry glue can be purchased at any specialized store that sells goods for sewing and handicrafts.

Only when all the materials are prepared can you safely proceed to the most important stage. To make the down jacket look attractive, you need to do the following:

  • Cut a small piece from the adhesive tape (its size should correspond to the diameter of the hole on the jacket).
  • Make a small but neat tear on the inside of the down jacket. This manipulation is necessary in order to easily reach the damaged area.
  • The tissue prepared in advance is applied to the tear site. Before processing, the edges of the jacket should be ironed through a layer of gauze. Using small stitches you need to sew up the previously made gap. At this point, the down jacket repair can be considered complete.

Situations when you need to sew up a sleeve on a jacket along the seam fall into a separate category. Of course, this procedure can be carried out at home, the main thing is to have patience. First of all, you need to prepare threads that match the color. It is worth noting that you can also repair a hole in a cigarette jacket using a sewing machine, but this option will only be appropriate in situations where large-scale work is involved.

To carry out such work comfortably, the product can be placed on the table, having previously turned it inside out. It is important to continuously ensure that the seam of the jacket remains straight. If the down jacket has a lining, then a small incision can be made in it in the area of damage. At the final stage, it will need to be sewn back.

"Glue" technology

If the question arises of what to do when you burn a down jacket with a cigarette, what to do in this case, then the best option is to seal the damaged area of the fabric . For work you should be armed with the following:

  1. Iron.
  2. Gauze.
  3. A strip of non-woven fabric (a special ribbon made from dry glue).
  4. A scrap of material that best matches the texture and color of the damaged jacket.

Non-woven fabric can be purchased at specialized stores selling accessories and handicraft items. Non-woven fabric is often found in fabric departments. When everything you need is prepared, you can start working. The procedure is as follows:

  1. A piece is cut from the non-woven fabric, slightly larger than the size of the burnt hole.
  2. Non-woven fabric is applied to the prepared patch.
  3. Turn the damaged jacket inside out.
  4. Now you need to get to the hole; if necessary, you can carefully prop up the lining.
  5. We place the patch with non-woven fabric on the holed area.
  6. We carefully iron this place with an iron over the gauze.

The renovation is complete. The last step is to carefully sew up the ripped lining. The jacket has been updated and can continue to serve the owner.

Traces on linoleum

Small specks on linoleum from smoldering ash can be removed using several methods:

  • Carefully cut out the damaged area of linoleum, and cover that area with materials of a suitable color (for example, plasticine, mastic), or fill small holes with glue and let dry.
  • If you have a small piece of linoleum left in stock, cut out small patches from it according to color and pattern and glue it to the burned area. Unfortunately, in such cases, we can only mask such a defect.

Decor will hide stains

Did you put a mark on your jacket with an iron, and nothing can be removed? Don't despair, the situation can be improved. To do this, use a ready-made application. Choose a suitable color and shape and simply iron it to the product. On the reverse side there is an adhesive base that melts under the influence of temperature and adheres to the fibers of the fabric or threads if the item is knitted.

The hole from the iron on the pants can be repaired with a decorative patch. It can be cut from denim and stretched out transverse threads along the edges. You can sew beads, beads, and sequins inside the patch.

A damaged T-shirt will find new life after iron marks appear on it. Apply the pattern to the area and the stains will no longer be noticeable. To do this, we recommend using textile paints.

There is no need to throw away your jacket if a burnt area accidentally appears on it. This is probably the most common case in the practice of housewives. Raincoat material melts to holes under the influence of high temperature.

You can seal them in several ways:

  • take it to the studio to have the inserts made. They can be made symmetrical, this will quietly hide the defect;
  • glue the applique, and you can choose it for any gender and age;
  • do embroidery;
  • perform decorative stitches;
  • sew on the braid.

As you can see, you can also deal with burnt spots if you show imagination and creativity. It often happens that after alterations you begin to like the clothes even more. Don't despair, it's better to start looking for a suitable solution!

Removing stubborn stains

In addition to various defects, down jackets and other types of jackets often have stubborn stains that are difficult to remove with ordinary means at hand. In this case, time-tested tips will come to the rescue:

  • Using regular laundry soap, you can remove fresh greasy stains. The greatest effect is achieved if you thoroughly soap the problem area and leave it overnight. After this, all that remains is to wash the jacket in the usual way.
  • If your outerwear is made of light-colored fabric, then you can use ammonia. Contaminated areas are wiped with a small cloth. You need to be careful, since applying ammonia to a clean fabric may simply discolor it.
  • Regular table salt has proven itself to be effective in the fight against greasy stains. The secret of this procedure is that the contaminated areas need to be rubbed with salt until they completely disappear.
  • You can often see specific stains with a greasy sheen appear on the collar, pockets and cuffs. Baking soda and vinegar will help deal with them. A small amount of the product should be applied to a cotton pad and wiped over problem areas.
  • Old, stubborn stains can be removed well with dishwashing detergent. In this case, the soap composition should be dropped onto the stain itself and rubbed well until foam forms. In this state, outerwear should be left for 4 hours and then rinsed under running water.
  • The most common and effective is bread crumb, which copes well with various types of stains. Treat the contaminated areas with a piece of bread and leave the jacket for 5 hours. After this time, the product should be washed by hand with the addition of powder or other detergent.

How to remove scorch marks

There are several ways to help remove stains caused by a very hot iron. When ironing trousers, shiny marks often appear. You can remove them using a solution of vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and one drop of liquid soap. Place gauze into the mixture, moisten it, squeeze it well and lay it on the product, then iron it. The procedure is repeated until the spots disappear. You can do the same with a skirt made of woolen fabric.

If marks are left on a silk blouse, you need to prepare a mixture of soda and water in the form of a slurry. It is applied to the stain and left until it dries. Then you need to scrape off the crust with a non-sharp object and wash the item as usual.

Hydrogen peroxide will help remove burnt areas on a chiffon dress. It is mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio and applied to the fabric with a piece of gauze. After 3–5 minutes, the product is rinsed and then washed.

On a shirt made of cotton or linen fabric, you can remove scorch marks with table salt. It is evenly scattered on the surface and then ironed through damp gauze. The stain should disappear.

Ruined your wool coat? The “burn” can be eliminated with onions. Cut the head in half and rub the burned area until the material becomes light in color. After this procedure, wash the item in a machine or by hand.

Cigarette stains on the carpet

Burns and ash on carpets can be eliminated in another way:

  • We cut off the burnt fibers on the carpet with scissors. Then we’ll go over this area with coarse sandpaper in order to completely remove the dark, spoiled fibers. Then turn on the vacuum cleaner and remove the resulting debris. Treat disfigured areas with soapy water.
  • To ensure that nothing is noticeable in this place, cut off a small amount of good fiber from inconspicuous places (for example, under the leg of a sofa) and carefully glue it to the desired place. Place a weight, such as a book, on top for a short time. If you do everything well, you won’t even notice the difference from the previous state of the carpet.

Rules of care

Once you have succeeded in sewing up your Bolognese jacket, you need to take proper care of it so that it lasts as long as possible. The main rule remains that before washing and other procedures you must study all the recommendations on the label. To prevent the jacket from losing its shape, it is best to wash it by hand. In this case, it is advisable to abandon diligent twisting, squeezing and ironing. For routine clothing care, it is best to use warm water (up to +40˚C).

Specialized detergent compositions, as well as care products for synthetics, have a gentle effect. To remove all stains, the jacket can be soaked in a pre-diluted product for 45 minutes (it all depends on the degree and nature of the dirt). The surface of the material can be rubbed with a sponge or brush, but it must not be rubbed. Particular attention should be paid to the most problematic areas - the collar, pockets and elbows. After washing, the jacket must be rinsed in cold water at least three times.

To prevent the jacket's filling from bunching up into separate bundles, it cannot be washed in a washing machine. Indeed, in this case, there is a high probability that creases and folds will appear on the surface of the item, which are very difficult to eliminate. In rare cases, you can resort to the help of technology, but you need to choose a delicate mode.

After washing, do not wring out outer clothing, but allow it to drain over a bathtub or basin. For gradual drying, it is better to choose a well-ventilated room, but away from direct sunlight and electrical appliances. A small jacket can be hung on hangers, but large items based on synthetic padding are best laid out on a clean terry towel, allowing them to dry in a horizontal position.

Cigarette marks on clothes

What should we do if we left a burn mark from a cigarette on our clothes?

  • You can try to remove a fresh ash burn with onions. Grate the onion until a paste forms. Apply to the scorched area. It is better to leave the mixture on the fabric (for a while). After that, soak the item in cold water, and only then wash it at the temperature required for this material.
  • Not very badly burned areas of clothing can be removed by soaking in milk (yogurt). After soaking for several hours, wash the item with regular hand washing with detergent.

If you just can’t get rid of this bad habit, at least be careful when smoking. After all, your life is much more valuable than this pointless activity of inhaling smoke. Which, moreover, harms not only you, but also everyone around you. Including your children!

Holes on bolognese jackets

Bolognese jackets are in high demand among people of all ages.

An ordinary coat or any other fabric item can be repaired and get rid of the hole without any problems. As for the Bolognese jacket, things are completely different here. The material from which the item is made is not so easy to sew up. Please note that repair of a hole on a bologna jacket may occur for the following reasons:

  • Burn;
  • There was a snag on a nail or something similar;
  • Blade cut.

If you follow simple instructions, you can sew up your jacket without any problems.

How to seal a torn down jacket

Some people don't know how to seal a hole in their jacket. It's simple: you just need to prepare a little. To work you will need the following things:

  • Dry glue tape “Flizelin”;
  • A piece of material that matches the color scheme of the jacket;
  • Iron;
  • Gauze.

Dry glue can be purchased at a store that specializes in selling fabrics and sewing things.

When all the components necessary for the repair are ready, you can begin the repair work.

First, a piece corresponding to the size of the hole is cut from the adhesive tape. After this, you need to put the tape on the pre-prepared fabric. In the next step, a small cut is made on the inside of the jacket. This is necessary in order to get to the damaged area from the inside.

Now all that remains is to place the fabric over the hole, and then, smoothing the edges of the hole, iron the jacket through the gauze. This is the repair

A cigarette is the main cause of burns on a jacket.

finished. It should be remembered that it is necessary to sew up the previously made hole from the inside.

Burnt hole on things

Quite often people are faced with a situation where the sleeve has been burned through. This may have happened due to cigarette ash or after touching a hot object. Regardless of the reason, you must try to eliminate the hole.

The problem can be solved in several ways. It all depends on the parameters of the jacket.

If there are various kinds of rivets or patterns on the clothes, then it is necessary to sew patterns or additional accessories on the burned area.

It should be remembered that it is advisable to make the same patch on the other sleeve.

As for sports jackets, it is better to stick an inscription or picture on them.

Causes of iron stains

They arise from improper handling of an electrical appliance. The iron, which is turned on for a long time, overheats and leaves stains when it comes into contact with the fabric. Modern devices are equipped with a regulator, so when ironing you should take into account the type of fabric and set the desired temperature. The power of the device also matters. If it is small, then the iron heats up slowly. When power consumption is high, this happens in a matter of minutes.

Burnt stains most often appear on fabrics that contain synthetic fibers. They often remain on items made of wool and silk. Cotton and linen are ironed at high iron temperatures and therefore rarely develop brown marks.

Every housewife should remember:

  • clothes should be ironed from the wrong side;
  • It is advisable to place gauze or a special pad on the fabric;
  • It is necessary to monitor the serviceability of the iron and the cleanliness of its soles.

To avoid problems, you can use steamers, but this device also requires careful handling, attentiveness and responsibility.

We update the down jacket ourselves

If you carefully repair the damaged area, not a trace will be visible.

If a torn hole appears, you can not only sew everything up or apply a patch. Various types of applications are popular now. You can use this. Thus, you can not only get rid of the hole, but also update your down jacket.

Before mending a tear, you should visit the appropriate store to select a decal or pattern. A similar method can be used if the sleeve or main part of the jacket is torn.

Iron-on adhesives and applications

Appliques and stickers can help out in many cases, but this method has a drawback. You can sew on a pattern or stick on a beautiful picture only where it is appropriate, namely:

  • On the sleeves;
  • On the chest;
  • On the pockets.

In other cases, the stickers will look stupid, which means it’s best to consider another way to fix the holes. If embroidery was chosen, it should be done on a separate fabric, which will subsequently be sewn to the torn area of the jacket.

Braid or tape

You can disguise the hole next to the seam using tape. Many people are interested in the question of how to fix a hole in a jacket so that it is invisible and also beautiful. It's simple, you should use all your imagination. It doesn’t matter what length or color the braid is. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Another way to disguise a hole is with reflective tape. The advantage of this method is that it will not only hide the defect, but will also make the jacket visible at night. You need to cut a piece of tape and carefully stick it over the gap.

Marks on furniture

After a successful feast, disgusting yellow-brown circles from a carelessly extinguished cigarette may remain on the surface of a wooden table. Cigarette burns from polished wooden furniture can be removed in the following way:

  • First of all, you need to start removing burnt spots as soon as possible.
  • Attach a small piece of sandpaper to the tip of a regular ballpoint pen and carefully begin sanding away the charred areas. At the same time, try not to touch a good part of the table, so as not to spoil the remaining surface.
  • After removing the bulk of the dirty area, drop a little washing bleach onto the cleaned areas to lighten the darkened area of the wood.
  • Now, on the former charred spots, a depression has appeared that can be filled with wax, having first melted it and painted it in a color more suitable for this surface. Choose an alkaline based wax dye. The wax must be allowed to cool.
  • Next, let's move on to the final part of our procedure. Heat a sharp knife blade over a fire. After we make sure that the wax on the grooves has hardened, we begin to remove its excess from the surface of the furniture. To permanently hide burn marks, apply several coats of polish to the desired area. Not a trace remained of the “fun” evening!

How to fix a down jacket yourself

What will you need?

In order to seal any damage to a leather jacket, regardless of the nature of the damage, size of the product and color, you will need to prepare the following tools:

  • Glue;
  • Cotton wool or cotton pads;
  • Acetone (or ethyl acetate);
  • Iron;
  • Dry cloth;
  • Pieces of material for a patch or applique;
  • Scissors;
  • Blade;
  • Press.

Among all the formulations on the market, the most popular ones can be noted:

  • Moment Rubber. This composition is characterized by increased resistance to temperature changes and moisture. Provides long-term results after use. The adhesive is made on the basis of polychlorpropene, which provides high quality gluing. Available in aluminum tubes of 30 or 125 ml.
  • Glue 88. Universal rubber adhesive with high thermal and moisture resistance. It is used for gluing products made of rubber, polymer or synthetic materials. It is characterized by fast setting and high elasticity throughout the entire application.

In order to seal a bologna jacket at home, you need to prepare all the necessary tools according to the list, and begin the process in the following steps:

  1. The first step is to prepare a patch that will be installed in place of the cut.
    It should be made of a similar material and match the color of the main material. The size of the patch should be larger than the damage itself, approximately 1-1.5 centimeters on each side. In most cases, manufacturers of bologna jackets sew a small fragment of the original material onto the outer surface of the product for future repairs. If there is no such piece, you can cut a small piece of fabric from the inside of the pocket;
  2. The surfaces to be bonded must be degreased. To do this, lightly moisten a cotton pad or cotton pad with acetone and wipe both parts;
  3. A thin layer of glue is applied to both parts to be glued, and special attention should be paid to the edges of the patch. There should be a sufficient, but not excessive amount of glue on them;
  4. After application, you must wait 3-5 minutes (the exact time depends on the glue manufacturer and is indicated on the packaging). During this period, a thin film forms on the surfaces;
  5. Carefully apply the patch to the damaged area and press firmly.
    The adhesion will occur almost instantly, therefore, it will not be possible to move the patch to another place in the future. In order for the patch to stick to the jacket as firmly as possible, you need to place a press weighing at least a kilogram on top. The time during which it should remain on the jacket will be indicated on the glue packaging.

Many buyers still remember the fashion for bologna outerwear. It is made of nylon fabric, which includes a special waterproof coating.

Nowadays, such products are also popular, because they are famous for their low cost and provide reliable protection in rainy weather.

But such clothes have one drawback - the lack of high strength. It can be easily damaged as a result of chemical or mechanical stress. After which it will be difficult to close the hole.

How to seal a bolognese jacket? In order for the repair to be successful, the first thing you need to do is assess the location of the break.

To eliminate a cut or burn, follow these rules:

  1. How to seal a bolognese jacket? First, select the correct adhesive composition for repairing the product. Carefully study the label that is on the item, and also test the glue in an inconspicuous area. Glue containing rubber and acetic acid ester has good recommendations. If you don’t have this at hand, try rubber glue or Moment.
  2. Cut the patch to fit the cut. The best option would be a piece of bologna fabric or rubberized material. The color of the jacket and patch must match.
  3. Wipe the inside of the product with a cotton pad soaked in acetone. Wait two to three minutes.
  4. Apply glue to the patch as directed in the instructions. Wait a while.
  5. Glue a piece of fabric on the wrong side. Place a press in this place that weighs more than one kilogram. Wait one to two hours.
  6. If the glued tear doesn’t look very neat from the front side, then try decorating the hole with a beautiful applique.

You can seal your jacket in another way:

  1. You can repair a torn item using two patches. First, trim the ends of the hole using sharp scissors.
  2. Prepare bologna patches. The inner piece should be slightly larger in size, but the patch on the front side should exactly match in diameter.
  3. Try to glue both parts together. Rate the appearance. If everything suits you, then place a linen or cotton cloth on top and gently iron it.

How to repair a hole in a jacket if it is burnt?

Seal the damaged area using:

  • non-woven tape;
  • a piece of fabric of the same color;
  • iron;
  • gauze.

Tape based on dry glue can be purchased at a special store that sells everything for needlework and sewing.

Once everything is prepared, cut a small piece of the duct tape. It must match the size of the hole. You need to make a small tear on the inside of the down jacket, this will help you easily get to the damaged area.

Place the fabric over the cut and then iron the edges of the hole through the gauze. Sew up the previously made incision. This completes the repair of the product.

How to sew up a pocket or sleeve that has a hole along the seam? At home, mending a cut will not be difficult.

First of all, choose threads that match the color. You can use a machine, but most often such problems are fixed manually.

To make sewing the product more convenient, place it on the table, first turning it inside out. Make sure that the seam is as even as possible.

If the down jacket has a lining, make a small cut in it in the area of damage. At the end of the procedure, sew the lining again.

What to do if a defect appears on a leather product? A jacket burned by a cigarette can be repaired using regular Moment glue.

Turn the sleeve inside out and lightly tear off the lining. Straighten the product and cut a small piece of fabric similar in size to the hole. Apply glue to the patch and the defect area. Wait 20 minutes.

After the material has dried, apply glue again. And glue the two parts together. Place the press on top and leave it like that for one to two hours. After the item has dried, check to see if the glued elements are coming off. If everything is fine, then you can close the cut in the lining.

If you have any doubts about how to seal a hole on a Bolognese or leather jacket, then take the product to the nearest studio.

Anyone can tear a thing, be it a child or an adult. To prevent the defect from being visible, you need to know how to properly fix the problem.

Bologna is a synthetic material from which raincoats, down jackets, jackets and sports waterproof clothing are most often sewn. The fabric consists of nylon or nylon, coated with a water-repellent material - silicone or polyacrylate. It is 2 times stronger than cotton fabric.

Bologna is not afraid of water, acids and alkalis. But if you accidentally catch your sleeve on something sharp, a hole will appear on the jacket. Methods for repairing outerwear depend on:

  • localization of the defect;
  • hole size;
  • jacket colors;
  • product design.

The most difficult thing to deal with is holes in classic-cut jackets made from light-colored jacket fabric. A hand-darned hole will be visible, and a patch in the shape of an animal or a sports patch will catch the eye. But there is a way out of this situation. Manufacturers of fabrics and accessories produce a variety of finishing materials for clothing that perfectly mask holes in jackets.

If there is a tear along the seam

If a hole appears on the seam, it needs to be sewn up by selecting the desired color of thread. In the absence of a sewing machine, the jacket is repaired manually.

Repair features:

  • select a thread that matches the color of the jacket fabric;
  • turn the jacket inside out and place it on the table;
  • in the area of the hole on the wrong side, rip out the lining;
  • Having folded the parts at the tear site, sew the fabric with a stem stitch.

If you don't want to bother with the lining, then sew the jacket with a hidden seam:

  • from the inside out, a needle is inserted into the tear site;
  • from the front side, two parts of bologna are pulled together with parallel stitches;
  • at the end, the thread is taken out from the wrong side and a tack is made so that the seam does not come apart.

Gaps in the area of internal and patch pockets are perfectly masked with decorative braid or trim. The seam will be neat only if the distance between the stitches is the same. To avoid handicraft repairs, you should use a sewing machine.

If desired, the hole in the jacket can be closed with a zipper. If the defect appears on the front of the product on the right, for symmetry, make the same insert on the left. Repair using a zipper will not only get rid of the problem, but will also make the jacket look original.

We turn on natural ingenuity

Don’t worry about inept handling of a cigarette and throw your favorite down jacket in the trash. Everything can and should be fixed. Of course, the easiest step is to go to the nearest workshop for repairing and sewing outerwear. But you can also make your own efforts, breathing new life into a seemingly irretrievably damaged thing.

Before you start fixing a burnt hole on your favorite jacket or down jacket, you should decide on the repair method. It, in turn, depends on the location of the burn.

Warm jackets are mainly made from bologna. This material quickly rose to the top of popularity in the middle of the last century and is still among the favorites. At its core, bologna is nylon that has been treated with a special polymer composition containing acrylic additives. It is thanks to this impregnation that jackets and down jackets made from Bologna reliably protect a person from cold, dampness and winds.

But such material is extremely difficult to repair. If fixing a hole on a down jacket made of ordinary fabric is not difficult at all and only requires certain seamstress skills, then with bologna things are more complicated. This material is extremely difficult to sew and the end result will be unsightly and noticeable. A different approach is needed here.

Repair with application

You can use another method to help solve the problem of how to repair a cigarette hole on a jacket. This is to decorate clothes with applique. But here it is worth paying attention to the style of the clothing itself. After all, everything should be in harmony and correspond. Therefore, you will have to work hard to find suitable thermal decals (they are sold in craft supplies).

When choosing a thermal sticker, you should take into account the style and style of outerwear. If a hole from a cigarette has formed on the sleeve, you can use two applications to make the jacket look harmonious.

If the clothes already have rivets, then you can additionally use these accessories. In addition to the application you will need:

  1. Iron.
  2. Gauze.
  3. A piece of fabric slightly larger than the size of the burnt hole, but smaller than the decal itself.

When choosing a thermal appliqué, you should consider that it matches the style of the jacket

Work with thermal adhesive is carried out in the following stages:

  1. We trim the lining and place on the wrong side of the garment (in the area of the hole) a piece of fabric of the same color.
  2. We sew a back patch along the edges so that there is no hole (otherwise the appliqué will have nothing to attach to).
  3. We put the applique on top of the hole (on the front side) (after removing the protective film from its backside).
  4. Cover it with damp gauze and iron this area for 10-15 seconds.
  5. Then you should iron this section of the fabric, but from the inside out, so that the thermal appliqué grips more firmly.
  6. After cooling, the burnt jacket is renewed.

When choosing a repair using such a sticker, it is worth remembering that it will only look appropriate on sleeves, pockets and chest. If a cigarette burns a piece of fabric in another place, it is better not to use the applique - it will look ugly.

Crafts using ribbon or braid

When repairing a down jacket or jacket, it is better to use reflective tape. It will be appropriate on any type of model. In addition to the “patch” function, such an accessory will also make clothes noticeable in the evening and at night. When purchasing reflective tape, you should take more consumables to give your jacket/down jacket a sporty, attractive style.

Reflective textile tape is called “reflective tape”. It is made from textiles. The fabric base is covered with a layer of a special reflective polymer (usually polyester).

On sale you can find a wide variety of reflective tape - uniform in color or with additional patterns. The most common colors you can see are yellow, red and white reflectors. When it comes to repairing outerwear, choosing this particular fabric as a patch becomes optimal. After all, reflectors:

  • frost-resistant;
  • is characterized by increased strength;
  • has high wear resistance;
  • is not afraid of exposure to moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

How to sew a lining

Many jackets use inexpensive material as lining - artificial silk, polyester, satin, satin, or less often viscose. When clothes are worn regularly, holes appear in the seam area, which over time turn into large holes.

How to repair a jacket lining:

  • turn the jacket inside out;
  • select the desired thread color;
  • thread the needle;
  • cut off the frayed part of the fabric along the edge of the hole;
  • Sew the lining by hand using a stucco stitch.

If the fabric delaminates, carefully treat the seam with liquid glue - Moment, Second. If the hole appears in a visible place on the lining, the seam is masked. To do this, use a piece of adhesive non-woven fabric or a patch based on hot-melt adhesive.

In half of the cases, holes in the lining occur in the seam area. If repairs are not done in a timely manner, they increase every day. To repair a broken seam, use a sewing machine:

  • set straight line mode;
  • adjust the stitch length (optimally 1.5 mm);
  • fold the two halves of the lining and clamp it under the machine foot;
  • sew, making a 0.5 cm long bartack at the beginning and end.

A few simple recommendations will help you get the job done right.

  1. When gluing a patch, it is better to use tweezers for more comfortable work.
  2. It is necessary to use only transparent and waterproof glue suitable for working with fabric materials.

Updating outerwear

When something is torn, not everyone can make patches for a jacket with their own hands. But this does not mean that you need to run to the first studio you come across. You can fix the problem using various applications, thermal stickers, braid or tape.

If you have singed a sleeve, pocket or chest area, you can cover the jacket with a beautiful picture. To glue an applique or iron-on sticker, you will need a hot iron.

You can mask the hole located next to the seam with braid. This method is good because it is not necessary to match the part to the color of the down jacket. It is enough to show your imagination.

You can close the cut using reflective tape. The advantage of this method is not only hiding the defect, but also creating good visibility at night.
