How to choose the right fabric for a sofa and upholstered furniture?

Such textiles were invented in the distant past, where flock was created from natural materials - wool and cotton, and craftsmen glued scraps of cotton to the resinous surface of the skin, creating a warm, durable material. Later, when large-scale industry came into the world, flock began to be produced on a large scale, mainly for furniture upholstery.
There are many varieties of flock:
  • Polyamide. Synthetic, used for mass furniture production due to the price of raw materials. Does not tolerate direct sunlight.
  • Cotton. It is the most budget option, but does not have the wear resistance suitable for furniture, so the service life of the material is extremely short.
  • Viscose. Soft yet easily wrinkled appearance.
  • Polyester. Similar to polyamide, but withstands ultraviolet rays. It is difficult to paint, so natural colors are often used - gray, beige, etc.
  • Acetate. Mainly used in the production of artificial fur. The main problem is the occurrence of creases due to improper use.
  • Flock on flock. The longest and most durable type, which has gained the greatest popularity as an upholstery material for upholstered furniture. It has a second name - double flock.

Double flock is made in two ways:

  1. After applying the first layer of pile, a second one is applied on top. The fabric becomes velvety and soft. The relief increases.
  2. During production, two layers of flock are applied simultaneously to the glued base. The length of the pile varies between layers, and this creates a velvety and textured effect. This method is more valuable, since the material is stronger and of better quality.

There are many advantages to such matter. Using double application, you can achieve color shifts or three-dimensionality of the design. This material is very strong and does not become saturated with water, which makes it indispensable for the production of furniture upholstery. The result of using flock is stylish, modern furniture in the colors chosen by the owner.

Flock: fabric features

Flock is primarily a fabric for upholstery. To ensure that the result does not disappoint you, you should take into account a number of fabric qualities that will help you make your choice.

The following factors should be taken into account:

  • Moisture resistance. If liquid is accidentally spilled on a sofa or chair, one should be easily absorbed. Otherwise, unsightly heels will remain on the fabric, which will be visible even in the photo.
  • Wear resistance. It is important to have anti-vandal impregnation, which, if there are pets, will not allow them to tear the fabric and will eliminate puffs. Significantly increases service life.
  • Softness. Test the fabric for tactile sensations. Soft fabric is much more pleasant for upholstering furniture for relaxation. The hard one is suitable for other purposes.
  • Strength. You should understand what is more important - to use natural materials, which are not durable, or synthetic, more durable ones. Also, it is worth considering the origin of the pile. Cotton and flax are plant materials. Wool is of animal origin. There may be an allergy to one or another natural material.
  • Hygroscopicity. Allows textiles not to become damp at high air humidity.
