Most often, lining fabric is made from artificial or synthetic fibers: mesh, viscose, polyester, chiffon, satin. Natural raw materials are used for these purposes in very rare cases, since such materials do not have the necessary strength and are more expensive. Cotton, linen and sometimes silk are found in the composition as a component.

The lining is needed so that the product holds its shape better, as well as to protect the main material from sweat, protect the product cuts from falling off and unraveling from the inside, and ensure wearing comfort. To perform these functions, the material must have certain characteristics.
The main criteria to be followed when choosing a lining:
- breathability;
- hygroscopicity (ability to absorb moisture);
- strength;
- resistance to abrasion and deformation;

Lining fabric is rarely made only from natural fibers (silk, cotton). Most often, synthetic or mixed fabrics are used, which are characterized by high wear resistance and lower cost. Regardless of the composition, high-quality lining material must have a number of characteristics:
- high density, strength and stable color, since the bottom layer of the garment experiences significant load and friction during wear;
- smooth, sliding, non-electrifying, pleasant to the touch surface will provide comfort when putting on and wearing;
- high hygroscopicity and breathability to maintain a comfortable microclimate;
- compliance with the seasonality of the item: for summer items you need lining fabrics made of thin “breathable” fabrics, for outerwear - thicker options;
- resistance to creasing, washing and dry cleaning, so that the product retains its presentable appearance for a long time;
- a harmonious color scheme, the choice of which is determined by the design idea: in the classic design, a lining is usually chosen to match the tone of the main material, but products with contrasting material also look interesting and original.
For each group of sewing and leather goods, it is recommended to use its own, most suitable types of lining fabrics. The master selects the material based on the category and purpose of the clothing, the characteristics (density, color) of the main fabric and other factors.
What are the types
It is logical to divide all the names of lining materials into two categories: by the origin of the fiber and by elongation.
Advice In needlework, almost any material that meets the necessary requirements is used as a lining. As a rule, it is viscose, less often - cotton from old, Soviet stocks. Based on the nature of the raw materials, the following types of materials are distinguished:
- natural (from flannel for autumn jackets to natural silk for luxury fur coats),
- artificial (the most common fabric is viscose),
- synthetic (mesh, polyester, etc.)
Dark gray lining mesh
Synthetic fabrics, at first glance, are not suitable for the role of lining, since they do not allow air to pass through well, accumulate static electricity, and do not allow moisture to pass through or absorb moisture well. However, it should be borne in mind that lining is a mandatory attribute not only of clothing, but also of accessories, such as bags, backpacks, wallets, suitcases, etc. In this case, synthetic lining materials are in the top because they are characterized by:
- ease;
- increased strength;
- resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage.
Lining fabric made from natural materials has its drawbacks (for example, cotton is heavy), but they provide an optimal microclimate when wearing clothes.
How much stretch the lining has also matters. In the classic version, it does not stretch. However, modern materials and tastes make their own adjustments. Knitwear and stretch have become a part of everyday life. Stretch materials are used to sew even business clothes. For such items that fit tightly to the figure, a stretchy lining is required. Therefore, today it makes sense to distinguish between lining material:
- not stretchy
- low,
- average,
- high stretchability.
Coat lining
Outerwear is designed to be worn in difficult weather conditions, which dictates special requirements for the choice of fabrics. The main material is a thick, warm, wear-resistant coat fabric with durable coloring and good water-repellent properties. A high-quality lining will give things a finished, seamless look and ensure a long period of wear.
Polyester is the most popular material for coat lining. It combines high strength, wrinkle resistance and an affordable price. Strong, inelastic fabric practically does not allow air to pass through, so it is not used for things in contact with the body. The polyester fabric lining does not require special care, tolerates washing and heat treatment well, and does not deform during prolonged active wear.
To sew winter and demi-season outerwear, polyester is used, quilted with padding polyester or holofiber according to a certain pattern. The result is a surface with a semi-convex texture in the form of rhombuses, squares, polygons, ornaments, and abstract designs. The insulation is securely attached to the fabric and does not come off during cutting, sewing and wearing. The quilt lining, in addition to its main tasks, also serves as an insulating layer.
The quality of the lining determines the wearing comfort, appearance and service life of things, so the material for the interior design of products must be chosen no less carefully than the main one. Atlas
The beauty and iridescent surface of the material are due to the satin and satin weave of fibers. Thanks to this technology, the weft threads are practically hidden, and the warps are on the surface. Atlas is produced mainly from synthetic, artificial or mixed raw materials. To give elasticity and good stretchability, elastane is added during production.
Yellow satin
The satin is smooth and flowing, very pleasant to the touch, and slightly cools the body. The material has a number of advantages: dense, hygroscopic, harmonizes perfectly with heavy and light, transparent fabrics, lace.

This is a fabric with a special weave, in which there are cells between the fibers (of different sizes, in the shape of a square, honeycomb, rectangle). This lining is made from natural, artificial and synthetic fibers. The rigidity of the mesh depends on the thickness of the threads; by adding elastane, a particularly stretchable, elastic fabric is obtained.
The mesh is characterized by tensile and tear strength, abrasion resistance, breathability, safety, hygiene, and lightness.
Silver lining mesh
The characteristics of the fabric allow it to be used as a lining in swimsuits, light dresses, sportswear, summer hats, bags and backpacks. Rigid mesh, or tulle, is used when sewing wedding and ball gowns; it perfectly holds the shape of the product and gives it volume.
Types of materials

Viscose
It is made from wood cellulose and is therefore artificial, not synthetic. The fabric is used as a lining for skirts, trousers, jackets, jackets, raincoats, dresses, bags.
Viscose fabrics
In appearance, viscose resembles satin or silk, but is much cheaper, which affects the price of the material and finished products. Linings made from this material are inferior in durability to satin, they fall apart under the influence of sunlight (ultraviolet radiation), and are not very durable. The positive properties of viscose are hygiene and breathability, the material does not electrify, retains heat well, and does not fade.
How to choose
There are several rules that must be taken into account when choosing fabric for lining.
When purchasing accessories, the main criterion for a lining is wear resistance. The material should not be loose or easily crumble.
Taffeta - fabric made from synthetic fibers
Lining for clothes:
- The material should be thinner than the main fabric.
- Its surface should be smooth, and the reverse should be sliding when in contact with other tissues.
- In classic models, the lining should be in harmony with the color of the top. Contrasting with the main material, variegated, etc. the colors look flashy and extravagant.
- Synthetics can withstand heavy loads for a long time, but do not allow air to pass through and absorb moisture.
- The mesh retains its excellent appearance for a long time, but is often susceptible to snags. It is not necessary to process the cut - just cut it with curly scissors.
- The shrinkage parameters of the lining fabric must match the shrinkage of the base material.
- The material must be resistant to various detergents and reagents used in dry cleaning, not wrinkle, not fade.
- Beautiful lining fabric decorates garments made of transparent material, so it is sewn with the right side up, and not to the body.
- The lining should not fail before the main material.
- The lining fabric and the base material must be given the same care, otherwise they will deteriorate at different times, which will accelerate the wear of the garment.
Qualities required for lining fabric
The lining is subject to constant friction, so increased criteria are imposed on the fabric:
- gives a fit, with minimal shrinkage (no more than 2%);
- hypoallergenic;
- amenable to technological processing;
- antistatic;
- crease resistance;
- stable color that does not fade.
Important! The lining fabric should not weigh down the product.
The material should not be afraid of frequent washing and be hygienic.
Care
Atlas is beautiful, but very difficult to care for. It is better to dry clean dirty expensive items with such a lining. Simpler clothes can be washed in cool water using liquid detergents. The satin cannot be wrung out; it must be dried away from direct sunlight.
Fabric satin - stretch
The mesh does not require special care; it can be washed in a washing machine, but the water temperature should not be higher than 40˚ C. It is not recommended to wring out such a lining; it is better to hang it and the water will drain out on its own. There is no need to iron the mesh; if creases form, you just need to hold the product over steam.
Viscose is a delicate fabric and requires careful care. It is better to wash such a lining by hand or in a washing machine at a water temperature not exceeding 30˚ C and in a mode intended for delicate materials. You cannot wring out or twist; you must wrap the wet product in a terry towel that will absorb moisture. After this, dry completely flat on a horizontal surface. Do not dry viscose near heating equipment or in the sun. Ironing should be done in the “Silk” mode.
Taffeta can be washed at a temperature not exceeding 40˚ C, rinsing and spinning as usual. The optimal temperature of the iron sole when ironing is up to 110˚ C. Drying taffeta in the drum of a washing machine is prohibited. Dry cleaning is permitted, but dry cleaning and bleaching of fabrics are contraindicated.
