Is it possible to iron tulle with an iron and how to do it correctly

Angelina

The kindergarten holds quarterly matinees. My daughter loves fluffy dresses with a tulle skirt - we have several of them. Any fold on tulle is very noticeable, so I know how to iron tulle correctly. I'll tell you.

Photo of what tulle looks like. This is a transparent lush fabric with a fine mesh. Festive skirts, dresses, veils are made from it...

Ironing tulle correctly

Tulle - what kind of fabric is it: a thin mesh, capricious and requires a gentle attitude. What is it used for: for sewing festive clothes, for example, wedding dresses, veils, fluffy skirts, petticoats.

Smoothing tulle is not easy: you need knowledge so as not to burn the capricious fabric. For example, a wedding dress is 80% tulle. How to iron a wedding dress at home or other tulle items without damaging them:

Method 1. Iron
Is it possible to iron with an iron - yes, if you set the “special mode”.

Ironing should be done through gauze or a thin cloth soaked in water.

If there is a lot of decor on things - beads, sequins, rhinestones, then ironing them can damage them

Method 2. Steam generator
How to iron a veil at home, avoiding wrinkles - steam it with a steam generator.

Steam the material vertically:

  • hang the veil on hangers or hooks;
  • walk over it with a steamer (you can use an iron turned on in the desired mode);
  • at a distance of 10-15 cm

Method 3. Hot steam in the bathroom
You can smooth out tulle in the bathroom:
  • hang clothes over a bathtub with hot water;
  • hold over steam for about 30 minutes - folds and creases should straighten out.

If you need to smooth out a small area of tulle, hold it over a hot kettle, or turn on a hot water tap.

Method 4. Water and hairdryer
A spray bottle of water and a hairdryer will smooth out uneven spots on an elegant tulle dress:
  • Sprinkle the uneven areas with water;
  • turn on the hairdryer - dry the dress, directing the air flow vertically downwards

Make ironing easier

On the way from a store or salon, a dress, skirt or veil may wrinkle and lose all its original solemnity. But the bride, no less (and maybe even more) than the little artist, wants to be dazzling and look perfect, because a wedding is not a dance or a song, for many it happens only once in their life. The question of caring for tulle can also be asked by mothers of the youngest fashionistas who have charming tutu skirts in their wardrobe.

So, as paradoxical as it may sound, in order to get rid of creases on this delicate fabric more easily and quickly, you need to wash the item made from it. It is proper washing and drying that will make the tulle more pliable for further bringing into an ideal form, simultaneously eliminating at least half of the bruises. What's important here?

  1. It is better to resort to hand washing to reduce fabric friction. In warm water, without aggressive movements, without strong push-ups - this is how you should wash your holiday net.
  2. Next, rinse the item thoroughly using conditioner.
  3. If the product is nevertheless placed in the machine, then the mode should be set to delicate, without spinning, and for additional protection, use special mesh washing bags.
  4. The product should be dried in a straightened state outside, avoiding drafts (or in a machine in the drying mode, but then dried in the fresh air or in a ventilated room).

After this treatment, ironing the tulle will be much easier, which is important, because all its festiveness disappears from the slightest folds, which will immediately become the most noticeable part of the outfit.

Advice

Do not attempt to machine wash your wedding dress. Its finest decor can be completely ruined by such “care”. Delicate embroidery, rhinestones, beads, stones, glass beads and other decor are very easy to ruin by machine washing.

Iron a tulle veil

Tulle is a light, airy fabric with a rigid structure that holds its shape very well. And if wrinkles have formed on it, it’s not easy to get rid of them, because, for example, you can burn a veil with an iron.

How to smooth out wrinkles on a veil:

  1. Gently wash the veil by hand . You can soak it in water with fabric softener for 15 minutes.
  2. Dry in a vertical position . Do not squeeze - let the water drain on its own.
  3. Make sure the soleplate of the iron is clean . Otherwise the veil will get dirty.
  4. Turn on the equipment to the minimum temperature . This is the “synthetic” mode.
  5. Straighten the veil. Lay the item out on an ironing board and place a gauze cloth on top. Iron each section in turn.

Steam generator application

Steaming is a safe method for removing wrinkles from tulle. Instructions for ironing mesh fabric with a steam generator:

  1. Pour clean water for ironing into the equipment reservoir.
  2. Hang the outfit on hangers and insert tubes into the sleeves.
  3. Pass the steam generator over the dress at a distance of 3-4 cm.

If necessary, repeat steaming.

Housewives have other ways to eliminate bruises:

  • Hot kettle. The method is similar to using a steam generator. You need to boil water in a kettle, remove the lid from the spout, then run the steam along the wrinkles. The method is suitable for small outfits or individual items.
  • Hairdryer and spray bottle. Spray the clothes with water from a spray bottle, then dry with a hairdryer. The item is first hung on hangers and dried from top to bottom. Instead of a spray bottle, you can use a regular bottle with a spray attachment. The temperature needs to be set to medium: too hot air will ruin the material.

The outfit must be clean. Otherwise, after ironing, the dirt will get into the clothes and it will be difficult to wash it off.

Caring for tulle

  1. Handwash only. Squeezing a little. We decided to wash it in a machine - hand wash mode, at low speeds and at a temperature not higher than 40 ° C.
  2. Tumble dry . On the "drying" mode. The operation of this mode is based on the principle of a steam generator.
  3. Let dry in a straightened state . It is better to hang them on hangers so that the room is well ventilated.
  4. Rinse in vinegar . If a colored tulle dress has lost its former brightness, rinse it in vinegar water (for 10 liters of water - 2 tablespoons of vinegar).

Wash tulle at a water temperature of no more than 40 °C.

A few tips on how to prevent wrinkles in the material

To avoid wrinkles, many housewives manage to ruin the fabric, since caring for it is very difficult. Quite rarely in everyday life, a business person who devotes himself only to work and home puts on a dress or skirt made of tulle. Usually this happens only on holidays, and preparations for such an event are usually made in advance. The only problem is that you can’t sew the torn fabric back together yourself, since the seam may be noticeable. The studio probably knows how to cope with this task without noticeable signs of material rupture.

In order to iron out a tulle outfit as little as possible, you should properly care for this fabric - it can become wrinkled after the first try on. There are a few tips to avoid unnecessary work:

  • tulle can be washed at a temperature of 40 degrees;
  • when spinning in a washing machine, you should choose a more gentle mode, but it is better to do without it altogether;
  • It is better to add fabric softener during the washing process;
  • When washing by hand, you should do without squeezing the fabric, you just need to hang the product on a hanger, shake it well and wait until it dries in the sun;
  • to avoid using an iron, you can carefully dry your outfit with a hairdryer, choosing not the highest power;

if the colored tulle has lost its brightness, then when rinsing the outfit, you can use water and vinegar, which you will need very little to add to a container of water.

Remember

  1. Check the iron. Before ironing tulle, make sure that there is no carbon deposits on the sole of the iron. Otherwise you will ruin the outfit.
  2. Place the item on gauze or cloth. During ironing, place the tulle on a thick fabric/gauze so as not to spoil the thin material.
  3. Protect the decor. Cover beads, rhinestones, and sequins with a towel so as not to spoil the decorative elements.
  4. Start ironing from the front. Iron the dress first from the front , then from the back.
  5. Tumble dry. If there is a “drying” function, it will not harm. There is no such function - dry in a vertical, straightened state in a ventilated area.

Setting the iron mode

Proper care of the material does not require subsequent ironing. If the fabric is wrinkled, the wrinkles are removed by drying. For obvious bruises, an iron will help. The principle of safely removing bruises on a mesh outfit is setting the temperature. Modern models have comfortable soles to which the mesh does not stick.

Before ironing, you need to set the delicate ironing method. At this power the temperature is 100 °C. But even a meticulous procedure carries the risk of material damage. Therefore, it is recommended to place damp gauze on the surface.

Ironing rules:

  • Before the process, clean the soleplate of the iron.
  • Do not use water in the iron.
  • Cover the skirt with a thick, clean cotton rag.
  • Dresses should be ironed vertically, because ironing the skirt will be easier later.
  • If clothes are encrusted with rhinestones, sparkles, or beads, the fittings are covered with dense pile material.
  • The sleeves are ironed on a stand.

Bleaching things

Airy tulle products can lose their snow-white appearance after some time. In such a situation, bleaching is carried out, choosing oxygen-containing varieties that do not deform the delicate fabric.

Most often, liquid Vanish Oxi Action is recommended, which effectively removes a variety of contaminants.

For items that are not machine washable, soaking is practiced.

Pour warm (30˚C) water into an enamel basin and dissolve the bleach. It is calculated that you need to take 50 ml of Vanish per 2 liters of water. Immerse the product completely and leave for 6 hours. If there are noticeable stains, first apply a small amount of bleach to this area of the fabric, leaving for 5 minutes. The bleached item is thoroughly washed with clean water.

If machine washing is carried out, then add 100 ml of Vanish in accordance with the instructions.

Features of starching

To properly maintain the volume of a tulle skirt, you can’t do without tricks. To ensure that the product retains its fullness and looks perfect on your figure, you can starch the skirt or petticoat a little. Everything will look natural if you follow the instructions.

Only perfectly clean items should be allowed to come into contact with starch. Otherwise, starch particles will attract dust and dirt, which will lead to an untidy appearance of the product. In addition, if your plans include starching, then there is no need to use conditioner when rinsing.

A girl is wearing a fluffy red skirt.
To prepare the solution, you need potato, corn or rice starch. The concentration of substances depends on the required future density of matter:

  • For easy compaction, the use of 5 g of granular substance per liter of water will be sufficient.
  • For greater rigidity, you will need twice as much starch.

For the starching procedure, it is necessary to prepare a solution. A tablespoon of starch is thoroughly dissolved in 200 ml of cold water. With constant stirring, the dissolved starch must be poured into 500 ml of boiling water and brewed for about 5 minutes. When the solution becomes clear, remove it from the heat and strain through cheesecloth to remove any lumps.

The brewed jelly is poured into cold water, and then the tutu skirt or petticoat is completely lowered into it. The product soaked in starch should be taken out and slightly squeezed using squeezing movements, being careful not to twist. The skirt is then given the required shape and sent to dry. Dried clothing requires ironing or steaming, the conditions for which are discussed below.

Care instructions

Girls don’t devote as much time to any outfit as they do to choosing a wedding dress. After the celebration, the dress is washed and sent for storage. It’s so nice to relive the memories of a memorable day a few years later.

Care Tips:

  • do not hang by the hangers, but by the loops sewn into the sides;
  • pack in a cotton case;
  • do not store dirty or stained items; it will be more difficult to bleach later;
  • keep in a closet or box under the bed, in the basement and attic, high humidity and danger of temperature changes, which is harmful to the material.

Following these rules will allow you to enjoy the beauty of your wedding dress for a long time.

Preventing the appearance of folds and creases

To ensure that the veil does not lose its beautiful appearance before the bride shines in front of the groom and her closest people, you need to follow some recommendations. Direct ironing alone will not be enough to ensure that the veil retains its appearance until the wedding. You need to learn how to store it correctly. Simply putting it in a closet with other things is not a suitable option. This way the veil will become unusable, and creases and folds will appear on it again, which are difficult to remove. Several ways have been developed to preserve an ironed veil until the wedding:

  • covers for a wedding dress - if space allows, the veil is placed in a cover for the dress, so it will retain its freshness;
  • special case - for a decorative veil of a large size or with a lot of beautiful additional details, a case is made separately;
  • homemade bag - great if you have a sewing machine in the house - you can sew the cover yourself in a few minutes in the manner of a regular duvet cover, but smaller in size; in extreme cases, use plastic storage bags.

Only completely dry items are placed in bags or cases. If you put something wet inside, it is more likely to wrinkle.

Tips for different types of fabrics

  • Iron silk and satin only from the wrong side and do not spray water on it, otherwise stains and streaks may remain.
  • For chiffon, tulle, polyester and other synthetic fabrics, you need to set the minimum temperature and iron it through gauze, otherwise you can damage the fabric.
  • For knitwear, prepare gauze folded in half or a special iron. It is advisable to turn on the steam mode.
  • A pleated leather skirt will only benefit from a damp cloth and drying by smoothing or using steam. You cannot iron natural leather.
  • You can iron a pleated wool skirt through a thick fabric, after moistening it a little with water.

Wash by hand

To wash a wedding dress by hand you will need a large container. Voluminous petticoats need to be laid out to thoroughly clean the fabric.

Washing by hand will take a lot of time. It will take 2-3 hours to clean one dress.

Washing the dress by hand

Primary treatment - soaking. This will increase the chances of removing stains. For soaking, use baby shampoo or a gel product that does not contain aggressive components that can spoil the material.

Soaking lasts 2 hours. Then the stains are removed and the fabric is bleached. This is followed by the main wash.

Step-by-step guide and important recommendations:

  1. Fill the bath with water. The temperature must correspond to the values indicated on the product label. Satin, brocade, taffeta, chiffon, velvet - 30°C, organza - 32–35°C, silk, tulle, lace, cotton - 40°C, crepe - 45°C.
  2. Dissolve liquid detergent in water. It should match the type and color of the dress fabric.
  3. Dip the outfit into the soapy solution. Wipe the hem, corset and all dirty areas thoroughly.

The outfit is left in the bathroom until the water drains. It can also be washed hanging if it is not weighed down with accessories and embroidery. Wet the fabric using a shower hose and carefully wipe with a soapy brush.
