Fashion is a capricious lady.
What was trendy last spring does not always look stylish next season. In pursuit of global trends, you shouldn’t frantically run for a new midi or maxi dress. After all, you can lengthen a skirt or dress at home yourself using existing ones. Today we’ll look at how to do this so that the product not only doesn’t lose its appearance, but also looks stylish.
Stylists advise
Who, if not stylists, can tell us girls how to transform an old dress. It turns out that it is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. You just need to decide how many centimeters the skirt will go down. Possible stylish options:
- loosen the hem, steam it through gauze and tuck it back to the desired length;
- add lace;
- run a strip of other material;
- make a yoke;
- add shuttlecocks of different directions: vertical, horizontal, diagonal;
- form folds;
- make a translucent case.
Let's look at each possible option in more detail.
Knitwear
Another option with ironing is to iron the dress through damp gauze, gently stretching the fabric with your hands.
You can choose the color of the fabric to your taste, the main thing is that it matches well with the main material. Before cutting, the new material must be wetted, dried and ironed so that it does not shrink when washed.
Subsequently, the item must be washed on a delicate cycle in cool water, otherwise it will shrink again.
Depending on the location of the problem, inserts are cut out taking into account seam allowances:
Cafes and restaurants often use this method of wall decoration.
They made a bow in the middle and it looked much better.
Burlap dress. The neckline is decorated with a huge collar - a shawl “a la the queen”.
How to lengthen a dress with lace
Lace has been the main trend for several seasons in a row. Moreover, light colors are popular: beige, cream, white - and no flashy, daring colors. A dress elongated with lace always looks impressive, stylish and feminine.
Be sure to match the lace to the dress or in contrast. A lace insert can be added to the bottom: carefully sew to the hem.
Stylists do not recommend using lace at the waist, since visually this part of the body will appear larger.
The lace part can be decorated with scattered pearls or sequins. With the fashionable lace trend, the field for experimentation is always open.
Features and Benefits
Fashion designers often call this dress by the French word “chemizier”. The distinctive features of this dress are the cut, which resembles an elongated shirt, as well as often a slightly elongated shoulder line, which creates the impression of a “bigger” appearance.
On the front of this dress, as a rule, there are buttons, less often - hook-and-eye fasteners. The cut of the dress itself usually does not emphasize the waist, but fashion designers often add a thin belt to the dress. The product usually has a collar as stiff as a men's shirt, or a stand-up collar.
A long shirt dress will appeal to any fashionista - this year they are extremely popular. It's easy to create a statement look with a long shirtdress. In addition, this product is quite versatile: you can wear it on a visit, for a walk, or even to the office.
Game of contrasts
It is possible and even necessary to lengthen the dress with the help of additional stripes. If you need to add 10-20 centimeters to the length of the dress, then this option is definitely for you. Take the same fabric in a different color. For example, choose a white or scarlet stripe for a black dress, and a black stripe for a red one. You can fantasize as much as you like. Tip: use the color wheel and you will immediately understand which color harmonizes well with which.
Method 1 – at chest level:
- a brooch in the shape of a creative stylish bow or flower;
- patch pocket;
- sew on buttons, pre-cover them with fabric from the insert.
Method 2 – transforming the sleeves:
- add an insert similar in color to the one running along the hem;
- replace or add cuffs;
- add buttons to the sleeves.
Use your imagination and creativity!
Main types of shirt dresses
First, you should decide on the types and styles that fashion brands offer for ladies of different ages and body types. Summer models differ from winter and demi-season options in fabric composition and, in part, colors. In the warm season and in the heat, designers and girls give preference to light, breathable materials, loose fit, light shades, rich and pastel colors, cheerful prints and classic patterns (checks, stripes, polka dots).
So, on the eve of the summer season, you can choose and purchase a shirt dress:
- short, medium length or floor-length model;
- plain, variegated or patterned;
- product made of chiffon, light denim, viscose, cotton, linen, cambric, silk, knitwear;
- an outfit of a fitted style, straight cut or in a fashionable oversize style.
Highlighting the waist
If you decide to lengthen the dress at the waist, then this is quite difficult. However, the interest in completing the work overcomes any upcoming difficulties. One simple option is to cut the dress at the waist level and place an insert of contrasting fabric there. Then connect the upper and lower parts.
The lower part should be larger than the upper, since there is a transition to the hips.

Let's be on trend: add waves
With the help of flounces you can not only lengthen the dress, but also completely change it. So, let's start creating a new style of dress. Fabric for flounces must be selected according to the following principle: a plain dress - a variegated material that matches the color scheme, and vice versa.
Options:
- Sew the flounce from the bottom, and use the same fabric to make a belt or facing for the sleeves.
- Cut the product along the waistline and completely modify the bottom of the dress.
- The frill for the bottom of the product can be made from several fabrics. For example, contrasting in color and the same as on the dress.
The second option involves sewing a simple skirt (tatyanka or sun shape). Then attach it to the bodice. This way you can adjust the required length of the spectacular new dress yourself.
The third option will require certain sewing skills. The length of the multi-tiered skirt will depend on how much main fabric you take. The result is a midi-length dress with a full skirt or a floor-length evening dress.
Ways to add length
Sometimes it seems that stylists have no limits to their imagination. Every season, new and most unexpected variations of dresses and skirts appear on world catwalks.
Tulle skirts worn over dresses, creating a delicate image, warm knitted sundresses, complemented by light and weightless lace, the list can be endless . But how to make such beauty at home? This is what we will talk about.
Extend with lace
Lace is a universal and quick option to transform an old outfit:
- simply sew over the skirt in one or several layers;
- divide the skirt into several sections in which lace will alternate with the main fabric;
- letting the lace into the waistline.
The first two options will help create a sweet, sensual and extremely feminine image. The third is more suitable for fatal beauties who are not used to remaining in the shadows.
To lengthen the skirt by alternating lace with the main fabric , you need to cut off a certain amount and then re-stitch along with the lace. The technology is quite simple, and the effect is simply amazing.
We follow approximately the same principle with the third image. Clearly measure your waistline and which area you would like to replace. Carefully cut out and reconnect the parts of the dress with the insert.
Important! There is no point in “cutting from the shoulder.” It’s better to think and check several times before cutting. Remember, after that, nothing can be returned.
Using contrasts
Contrasts are in fashion now and you can easily follow this trend too. To do this, you should compare materials or textures that, at first glance, seem to contradict each other.
If you have a dull, monochromatic dress, feel free to add a frill of ribbon decorated with ornaments or a pattern in an ethnic style. Folds, flounces or ruffles will not look out of place.
Thin ribbons of lace will add restraint and romance to an overly colorful and bright outfit.
Important! When combining incompatible things, it is important to stick to one concept. Materials must have differences, but also similarities at the same time, be it color, texture, decorative elements, etc.
Highlighting the waist
What gives a woman’s image a delicate and sensual outline? That's right, waist! So if you want to make a midi or maxi dress, definitely consider this option.
Want a more revealing look? Then give preference to light fabrics and translucent lace. If there is no need for excessive frankness, and a couple of extra candies are treacherously reflected on the sides, then make inserts from dense fabrics or rough lace that holds its shape.
Important! A harmonious image in which a woman feels comfortable is much more beautiful and sexier than the most revealing outfits. Don't chase fashion, be yourself!
Add flounces and frills
Perhaps there is nothing more romantic than frills and flounces. They give the female image lightness, innocence and romance.
Select fabrics that match the color and texture and cut the desired length. Learn, you need to take a couple of centimeters with a margin so that when hemming, the dress does not “jump” again.
Frills and flounces, especially if you are an amateur seamstress, are best done separately . Initially, assemble and secure the masonry of the required width using sewing pins. Attach them to the dress to check how harmonious they look and only then sew them on.
Thanks to this trick, you can create real masterpieces quickly and efficiently.
Important! Frills and ruffles visually make the silhouette larger. If you are already curvy, then it is better to give preference to fringe or contrasting inserts.
Create a translucent case
Dresses and skirts with a transparent sheath are now at the peak of popularity. Sort of like a city Cinderella bride. And no matter how difficult it may seem to repeat such a masterpiece, in fact everything is simple:
- To start, choose a translucent fabric . It is best to give preference to organza or tulle. Measure the required length, not forgetting the allowances.
- Finish the edges of the sheer fabric . This is very important so that in the future the finished product has a neat appearance. You can do this by pre-stitching the edges, or use a quick method - adhesive thermal tape with a spider web.
- Connect the edges of the future skirt . There are two connection options. The first is that you take a piece of fabric across the full width and you just have to join one side to get a case. Secondly, you divide the required width into floors and, after cutting the fabric, sew it together.
Translucent case
For a translucent case, it is best to purchase chiffon or organza. A rectangular piece of fabric needs to be stitched along the edges and sewn to a thick elastic band. The unaesthetic quality of the elastic band can be covered up with a decorative belt.
Nowadays, wrap skirts are popular. Why not wear a sheer wrap skirt with a wide belt that accentuates your wasp waist? It looks very original and gentle.
Shuttlecocks
Beautiful fluffy flounces would be appropriate for a straight skirt or a knitted tight outfit.
Shuttlecocks can be secured as follows:
- Directly along the front side of the skirt, when the cut lines of the flounces are processed decoratively and remain outside. The bottom line of the hem appears under the insert.
- The upper cut of the flounces is attached to the skirt from the inside. The hem is on the front side.
- The edge of the hem of the skirt and the flounces are aligned on the front side. The connecting seam will be placed inside.
Important! Flounces are obtained by freely casting the edge of a rectangular fabric onto a thread and then attaching it to the main fabric. It can be made as one layer or several.
Lengthening a knitted dress
Knitwear wears out quickly and stretches. Therefore, you need to lengthen a knitted dress through a cut at the waist and make an insert from the fabric or carefully lengthen the hem.
Immediately pay attention to the fabric that will be the insert. It should not be heavy, as the knitwear will not hold up and will sag. It is necessary to sew using a special needle for knitwear. Otherwise, holes will form, from which arrows will appear.
If the knitwear is natural, such as linen or sundress fabric, then the fabric for insertion should not be artificial. If you need to add only a few centimeters, then lace will look impressive and practical. Both stylish and fast!
Nowadays, staple dresses in the Russian style are in particular demand.
If you are a needlewoman yourself and know how to crochet, then the outfit in your hands can turn out to be designer. Use the hem threads as a base and tie lace to the required length. Pay attention to Irish lace technology. Individual knitted elements are assembled according to the layout, creating a unique pattern.
Ways to add length
Ideas for lengthening a short dress will not only help solve the hem problem, but also decorate the item, turning it into a creative, modern piece of clothing. It often seems that only a professional tailor can cope with such a task. That is why many people wonder: is it possible to lengthen the dress yourself. The answer is clear - of course. Many options will not only save precious budget and time, but also allow you to show maximum creativity at minimal cost.
Using lace or flounce
One of the easiest ways to lengthen a dress with your own hands is to sew a strip of material to its hem. To avoid damage to the appearance, you need to use exactly the same fabric as the one from which the product is made. If there is no piece of identical material, it is worth playing with contrast.
A slight difference in color or texture of the material or its weaving will be noticeable. Even a difference in one tone or another texture is noticeable. This greatly spoils the appearance of the dress.
You can lengthen the hem:
- Wide lace braid. Elegant openwork weaving is suitable for light summer dresses made of viscose, silk or other flowing materials. The color is selected to match the main shade. If you are interested in how to lengthen a short denim dress, then lace will be one of the most successful options. Its beige or white shade without shine will emphasize the color of denim, playing on the difference in fabric textures. Thick bouclé fabrics for autumn-winter clothing also go well with this type of trim, but the shade of the insert should be darker than the main material.
- A shuttlecock made of fabric. By choosing a material that is identical or similar in composition, you can decorate any dress, regardless of season and style. In this case, you should carefully consider the choice of color. To create a more complete look, you can further decorate the sleeve cuffs or collar area.
When lengthening the hem with lace or fabric, special attention should be paid to the pomp. To get a large volume of flounces, you need to sew twice as much material as the total length of the hem. Fluffy elements are suitable for a straight, tight knitted outfit. If you just need to lengthen the clothes, then the fabric is taken in a 1:1 ratio. The flounces can be attached to the front or inside of the skirt. When choosing a way to lengthen a short linen dress, you need to take into account that the material loses its shape when worn, so massive ruffles are not suitable for this type of fabric.
In order to sew a fluffy hem, regardless of the type of fabric or braid, you must first thread the piece with a needle onto a long thread, straighten it evenly along the entire length, and only then sew it onto the bottom of the garment.
Lengthening a dress with lace
Alluring train
How can you lengthen a dress only at the back? Quite a common question that girls ask. If there is a harness at the back, then you can insert a wedge from it. After which this element is modified into a lush train. If desired, you can complement it with flounces. However, this option is more suitable for evening wear.
The simplest option is to make a case from translucent fabric (chiffon) and simply shorten it at the front.
If the dress is a fish style and you have a petticoat lying around at home, then the “tail” is extended with flounces and fixed on the petticoat.
A spectacular train can be pulled out from the waistband of the dress. It is necessary to gradually increase the tiers of fabric. For example, we place narrow tiers at the top, and attach wide tiers to the hem. Below the edge of the skirt they need to be narrowed. The result will be a kind of lush rhombus.
The ideal train option is presented in the form of a removable skirt. It can be with a slit in the front, with an asymmetrical hem, or with flounces. Any. This skirt is relevant for several seasons in a row. Mostly this element can be found on an evening dress.
Among the materials for a removable train, you need to choose guipure, chiffon, pleated fabric, and lace.
Regarding color: the removable skirt should perfectly match the tone of the dress. A belt in the form of a satin ribbon or a decorated belt can act as an accent.
Sewing a train is quite simple. The base is a rectangle. You will need two widths of canvas. Gather evenly around the waist, sew on a belt with hooks or a ribbon. If an asymmetrical version of the dress is intended, then it is necessary to fold the fabric in half and smoothly round the bottom line.
Choose the shape of a sun as the basis of your layout. In this case, you need to leave the seam open and round it to the main length. Make folds in the waist area, opening the legs slightly. Voila, a spectacular outfit is ready!
Making inserts on a leather straight skirt
You can widen or lengthen a straight leather skirt using quite simple methods of using inserts:
- Ripping the product along the side seams, removing the belt, if there is one. In this alteration, strips of the required width are cut out of leather or knitwear. After this, the product is assembled by sewing stripes into the sides and adjusting the skirt to the waist. If she had a belt, she will have to lengthen that too.
- Make imitation inserts. If there is leather with a similar texture and strips of lace, sew several into canvas, alternating transparent and opaque parts. Sew the finished strip to the bottom of the skirt.
- Fringe. Cut the skin of a suitable color into strips of the same width, leaving the entire upper edge. Indian-style decor will update and lengthen an old item. The strip does not have to be cut thinly: it looks beautiful and is wide enough, about 3 cm.
With a lot of work, you can come up with beautiful lengthening options for a leather skirt: cut leather parts in the form of leaves or geometric shapes, crochet each one and join it into a fabric. Attach the decorative strip to the bottom edge.
Denim dress
Jeans is a unique material of all times and peoples. It will probably never go out of style. And there are so many options for denim clothing that it’s dizzying. Skirts, sundresses, dresses, shorts, trousers, etc. amaze with the variety of styles in women's fashion.
Long denim dresses with lace look very impressive. This is one of the possible options for transforming the style. We can safely highlight other changes in style:
- sheath dress (lace at the top);
- A-line dresses, and add colored lace to the hem;
- if the skirt is asymmetrical, then lace inserts can be inserted onto the sleeves and along the waistline;
- decorate a semi-fitted sleeveless product with lace elements along the bottom of the product;
- Add lace to the hem for a V-neck dress.
The dress, which is elongated at the back, adds a touch of adventurism. Lace can be inserted along the square neckline of the dress.
Lace elements can be of different shapes and sizes.
In any case, lace adds charm to the look. It all depends on your imagination.

V by Very Premium High Waist Slim Leg Jeans (£30)
If you find skinny jeans to be too skinny and you'd prefer a less tight look, then skinny jean pants are your new fashion best friend.
Still smooth and still easy to rock, the thin leg fits snugly but doesn't need to be removed at the end of the day.
This pair from V by Very still shows a hint of stretch, but much less than the slim style, so they retain a little more of a denim feel.
We love the ankle length on these beauties too.
Hipster straight leg pants
V by Very Studio Slim Straight Leg Jean (£32)

They start trends, steal trends, make them their own, and bring back old favorites from yesteryear in a new light. You must love them.
That's exactly what they did with straight-leg jeans. Just a few seasons ago it was skinny, guy or nothing, and now it's fair to say that the straight fit is probably the most stylish option right now.

V by Very Premium Flare Jean (£30)

Flares also has a great vintage vibe, evoking thoughts of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Haight-Ashbury, hippies, flower power, free love!
You can go retro with peasant blouses, long necklaces and a suede vest, but you don't have to!
But no matter how you style your flared jeans, you can be sure they'll fit perfectly, so why not take a step back in time with this V by Very version?
Fashion connoisseur MOM
Laura wears V by Very High Waist Mom Jean (£32)
It's funny that something as ridiculed and "uncool" as "mom jeans" has suddenly become the exact opposite. But these are the kids of fashion.
Usually, anything with the prefix or suffix "mom" immediately makes it look a little lame, but somewhere along the line, mom jeans became the exception.
In thicker, non-stretchy, high-waisted denim with a relatively loose fit, they are now being seen on fashionable young people rather than late 1980s moms.
So why not try this fashion? Designed by the always chic Laura Byrne, this pair from V by Very features a tacked-on silhouette as well as vintage bleached denim.
Fashionable full legs of the 90s
V by Very Premium High Waist Full Length Jean (£32)
The 1990s were great.
This decade was rich in music and culture, and the last few years have also been mercilessly plundered for the sake of fashion.
Bodysuits, bomber jackets, Dr Martens boots and even scrunchies are all making an appearance again and again, so it's no surprise that '90s-inspired jeans are making an appearance too.
We love these high-waisted long jeans, also known as the Dad Jean. Made from 100 percent cotton, they'll be great for relaxing and have a cool, relaxed, straight leg. For a '90s dad look, pair with cropped sneakers and a bodysuit.
Or try tucking them into ankle boots and wearing a cozy knit this fall.
Skinny jeans with EXTRA sass

If you love skinny jeans but want a fully supported look, then the V by Very skinny shapers are for you.

And as she perfectly demonstrates, this pair from V by Very does just that! Be prepared to receive a LOT of compliments!
It's not just about jeans...
Influencer Lauren Nicole looks stunning in this V by Very Curve denim shirtdress (£40).
The beauty of denim is how easily it can be worn with any type of clothing.
From dresses to jackets, from shorts to skirts; We even spotted a few denim bikinis along the way.
So if you haven't already, consider expanding your love affair with denim to include a few more casual pieces.
We're especially loving denim dresses and jumpsuits this season.

Like this tiered tuxedo dress from River Island. It has a summer vibe, but would look great layered over a thin knit polo in winter.
Denim overalls
If you think of overalls when you think of denim overalls, think again.
While we love overalls, there are plenty of less casual denim all-in-ones out there and we can't recommend investing in one enough.
While you can get sleeveless or short sleeve styles, it's all about the denim overalls right now.
LR: V by Isla Soft Touch Extra Long Zip Denim Jumpsuit (£48)
This blue version from V by Very is perfect for those who want to keep an element of femininity in their waist with a tie belt, while the black jumpsuit is all about the androgyny.

Materials
- Cotton
Most often, a shirt dress is made from natural materials. The most popular of them is probably cotton. This fabric is comfortable to wear, and with a small addition of synthetic threads it solves the problem of many fashionistas - it wrinkles less.
Summer dresses are made from it. Such models are extremely comfortable, and the body is not hot and comfortable.
- Jeans/denim
An excellent option for sports style lovers. Fits well on the owner using a thick leather belt, as well as sneakers or sneakers. Can be combined with a bright scarf, leather or wooden jewelry, a large leather bag or backpack. For shoes, something in a retro style would be suitable: rough material, bulky tractor sole.
Dresses made from this material last a long time, are easy to wash and almost do not wrinkle (an exception may be summer models, which are made from thinner denim). Outfits made from this fabric are good for walks, gatherings in a cafe with girlfriends and shopping.
- Chiffon
This is the most popular fabric used for sewing long shirt dresses. Light and romantic. Dresses made from this fabric look elegant and sophisticated. There are a great many color options for this fabric, so every girl will be able to choose exactly the style and color that will help create a unique summer look.
Hem lengthening technique
The hem of a dress is one of the main elements of clothing; it is this lower part that forms the style, emphasizes grace, or, conversely, expands the lower part of the outfit. One of the easiest methods to correct a short dress is to lengthen this particular part of the garment.
There is one thing to remember: the hem can be lengthened by no more than 4 cm. If this value is enough, then you can safely use the following method:
- Undo the hem of the dress.
- Unfold the part that was previously wrapped.
- A fabric of the same sample or another, similar in tone, is selected. It is important to remember that the selected strip must be cut with high precision to ensure a harmonious connection with the base of the hem.
- The strip is sewn to the bottom of the dress.
- The new hem is hemmed in such a way that no one will notice that it is not “original”.
Colors and prints
- Striped
A longitudinal stripe can visually “stretch” the figure. Wide cross stripes are perfect for young and slender fashionistas. You can combine colors in stripes in different ways: contrasting and classic - black and white, or delicate shades of the same color.
- In a cage
Checkered dresses look very formal. This pattern adds spontaneity even to the most classic, formal outfit.
A flashy checkered pattern on a bright red or rich blue background is slowly going out of fashion. A barely noticeable pattern made in bed colors is becoming popular.
It is important that a large check is not suitable for those with a curvaceous figure - only a young and slender person can afford such a fabric pattern. But a small checkered pattern will decorate any young lady.
- Leopard print
What you need to create a spectacular image. Bright and quite bold. This print will look extremely interesting in a long “flying” chiffon dress. As a rule, should be worn with heels and a dark leather bag.
- In a small drawing
Small prints will add some coquetry to any dress. Look great in everyday wear. However, now small drawings of birds multiplied throughout the entire fabric of the dress are extremely relevant, which, with a successful choice of style, will ideally fit into the office style.
