How to fashionably alter a sheepskin coat: ideas, patterns, tips, before and after photos

If you have an old sheepskin coat hanging “on demand” in your closet, but you don’t dare throw away a once-expensive item, think about the fact that you can make many interesting and useful things from an old sheepskin coat with your own hands. Natural sheepskin has fantastic properties; it not only warms, but also helps with joint diseases and back pain. But even an artificial sheepskin coat can be used in the household - it’s still better than taking it to a landfill. Having altered a worn item will give it a new life, and you will save money.

Before you begin alterations, consider whether the coat will remain as outerwear or will be used to make smaller items. If most of the item is to be saved, the material needs to be put in order - greasy places should be cleaned and stains removed. To do this, use a bread crust, a ball of crumb or a regular eraser; you can also rub the problem area with semolina, and then use a vacuum cleaner with a furniture attachment. So, let's begin. Let's see what you can sew from an old sheepskin coat with your own hands - the creative ideas proposed will help you decide on the direction of future activity.

How to convert a sheepskin coat into a jacket?

Before turning a sheepskin coat into a jacket for everyday wear, first decide on the length of the future product. A natural sheepskin coat will make a winter jacket, so it’s better to make it not very short, and feel free to turn an artificial one into a short jacket. To give things a factory look, make the shelves rounded. Trim the shelves and hem with fur, and decorate the lower corners with appliqué. So-called thermal stickers for every taste are sold in sewing stores at quite affordable prices, and to transfer them to a future jacket, you just need to run a hot iron through the fabric. The buttons can be replaced with more original ones, and the zipper can be supplemented with a patch clasp. Try decorating the product with “fur” from yarn; it is made using the elongated loop technique. This option is suitable for an artificial product - the yarn will reduce the cost of natural sheepskin.

General fashion trends in sheepskin coats for the 2020-2021 season

Let's highlight the main trends.

  • Color solutions are not limited to the classic beige and shades of brown for sheepskin coats. The designer was offered a wide palette: white, black, tit, blue, burgundy, green, khaki, turquoise, peach.
  • The collars of the sheepskin coat were trimmed with fur. The type of fur pile and its length can be very different.
  • The styles are decorated with original metal details, art decor, stylish inscriptions, unusual cuffs, etc.
  • Contrast is in fashion: the sheepskin coat itself is made in a bright color, and the inner fur and trim on the sleeves, hood and other details are in a lighter contrasting shade.
  • The undisputed favorite of the winter season is short sheepskin coats made of natural sheepskin, which go perfectly with both business and casual style, all kinds of dresses, trousers and skirts. Long models of sheepskin coats were also presented, which are simply ideal for our climatic conditions and will keep you warm even in the most severe cold.

We bring to your attention the most fashionable styles and ideas of sheepskin coats for the 2020-2021 season.

Crop sheepskin coats

Short sheepskin coats are at the peak of the 2020-2021 season. They can be of various styles - from biker jackets to pilots, made in a variety of colors, and combined with a variety of bows. Miniskirt, fashionable knitted dress with a high neck or golf sweater, skinny trousers, etc. – any combination will look expressive and stylish!

Short white models

Although we have already mentioned multi-colored crop sheepskin coats, it is impossible not to mention one of the most spectacular variations - a short white sheepskin coat. Don't be afraid to get lost in the snow-white onions in winter! Just add a bright accessory and the look will be irresistible.

Aviator sheepskin coats

Everyone is well aware of aviator jackets, which periodically explode the catwalks with their appearance. In the new season, fashion designers offer us this style in sheepskin coats. A very original, and most importantly, comfortable solution. The aviator shearling coat is the undisputed hit of the winter 2020-2021 season.

A distinctive feature of this rough model is its voluminous collar, as well as an oblique zipper. In some models, the collar is so large that you can even ditch the hat. This sheepskin coat is very versatile and allows you to create many different looks. It goes well with leggings and wide trousers.

Aviator sheepskin coats have all the main features. They feature fur cuffs and wide, trimmed lapels.

Combined sheepskin coats

Shearling coats that combine different textures of materials and colors look original and stylish. This can be a combination of sheepskin and fur, smooth leather and tanned, or, for example, suede with reptile skin. This non-standard combination makes it possible to look bright and impressive even in winter.

Oversized

“From a man’s shoulder” or oversized continues to dominate the catwalks. The oversized style can be found in a wide variety of clothing items, and in the new season it has reached sheepskin coats. Therefore, feel free to choose an oversized sheepskin coat, which, by the way, will be especially warm and cozy in the piercing cold wind.

We sew a sheepskin jacket

If the coat sleeves are too worn out and cannot be restored, you can sew a vest from an old sheepskin coat. So, let’s quickly sew a sheepskin jacket, you just need to flog the sleeves and trim the armhole with fur. Most likely, you will want to shorten the product, then the hem will also need to be decorated with fur - this is the easiest way to hide the raw edge with its possible irregularities. The fastener can be removed altogether or limited to a lace in the chest area, hidden hooks, or a pair of patch fasteners. A vest, like a jacket, can be decorated with appliqué, and if you plan to wear the vest at home and in the yard, deep patch pockets will be useful - use a cut-off hem or sleeves for them.

Fur trim on the sleeves and bottom of the sheepskin coat

You can do without fur trim on the sleeves and bottom, but not in this case. Sheepskin fur here has not only a decorative purpose, but also a practical one. He increases the missing section of the sheepskin coat by 15cm. You can also use this technique, and the fur itself can be bought undyed. Firstly, it is cheaper, and secondly, it is difficult to find the right color and shade. Undyed fur can then be quite easily dyed yourself at home.

Well, so that your “tricks” are not noticeable on the inside of the sheepskin coat, cover this area with a lining in the color of the sheepskin coat’s fur.

After completely recutting an old sheepskin coat into a sheepskin coat with a hood, even a small area remained unused - the collar of the sheepskin coat.

In this video you will see how a furrier machine works. We sew together two small pieces of fur especially for you.

We make home shoes from an old sheepskin coat with our own hands

In winter, we dream of warm and cozy slippers, so why not make them from an unwanted coat? We make comfortable house shoes from an old sheepskin coat with our own hands using ready-made patterns and patterns.

Sheepskin house boots will warm your feet and protect you from colds. Use sleeves as the boot, and make a pattern for the sole using the example of insoles from any of your shoes. To avoid the hassle of finding patterns, try using soft moccasins that fit your size as a base and sheathing them with sheepskin material. An additional advantage of this solution is the durable sole. Some may find such house shoes impractical, but children's sheepskin booties will appeal to most parents. Soft and incredibly warm, these booties will take care of your baby’s health and will not interfere with his active games.

How to “refresh” the appearance of a sheepskin coat

It was a long and rather old sheepskin coat with a “short” collar. To refresh its appearance, I first had to take it to the dry cleaner, clean it and paint it there. All this is certainly not cheap, but a new sheepskin coat costs much more.

You will also need to buy a new layer of leather. Leather from unnecessary old things will not work; you need new and preferably patent leather, as in this photo. Visually shiny leather looks impressive on the matte surface of the sheepskin coat, and at the same time it “refreshes” well.

The shoulder seams are the most worn place (from the bag), so I had to make these leather overlays. Well, since the sheepskin coat was only shortened by 20 cm, the missing section of the hood had to be extended with leather. By the way, for a “full-fledged” hood pattern, you need to shorten your fur coat or sheepskin coat by 40 cm.

What can you make from an old sheepskin coat for your pets?

Do you have a cat or dog that lives in the house? Make them a cozy sheepskin bedding. This is not all that you can sew from an old sheepskin coat for your pets, using skill and imagination.

Altering a sheepskin coat is a troublesome task, but cutting a circle or rectangle from a ripped jacket is as easy as shelling pears. This rug can be laid directly on the floor or placed in a house or basket where your pet likes to sleep. While walking your dog in a snowstorm and cold, you probably thought about clothes for animals. It is also not difficult to alter a sheepskin coat into a blanket for a dog - there is a lot of material, and the size is small, you have the right to make mistakes. The damaged fragment can be replaced with a new one, tailored more correctly.

How to cut the bottom of a sheepskin coat and make a hood

I would like to note right away that I do not offer detailed training on how to shorten a sheepskin coat and how to make a hood pattern and other knowledge. If you take on working with fur, cutting fur coats or sheepskin coats, then you should already have a certain level of knowledge and experience. In this article I only provide a number of practical tips and recommendations that will be useful to you in your work.

Still, for those who have never worked with fur and don’t know where to start, I can only tell you how to shorten a sheepskin coat. Put on the clothes in which you will wear the sheepskin coat, put on the sheepskin coat itself and fasten it with all the buttons. Take a long ruler and chalk and have someone mark the cut line for the hem. To do this, your assistant needs to rest the edge of the ruler on the floor and make marks, and you need to slowly turn in small “steps.” Then remove the sheepskin coat, connect these marks and do not forget to add an allowance. This way you can determine the shortening line for the bottom of the sheepskin coat. But I repeat once again, if you have no experience, you need to start with a completely unnecessary thing that you wouldn’t mind throwing away.

As for the hood, the pattern is easy to find on the Internet. Transfer it to paper, try it on “live” from test fabric. If you need to make adjustments, and only then cut out the parts from the fur.

Furniture accessories

Not only the pet, but also its owner will not refuse soft and warm bedding in winter. in order to make furniture accessories, cut out the sheepskin coat and make beautiful covers for stools or a sofa deck for an armchair. The need for a fur seat cover is especially acute for drivers who have to warm up their car for a long time in the cold. Remember how it was once fashionable to decorate the living room with animal skins? But the skin on the floor plays not only a decorative role in the interior - it is so pleasant to walk on it barefoot, feeling the warmth and softness of natural fur. Sheepskin coats make excellent pillowcases for decorative pillows if one half is sewn from sheepskin and the other from textiles or yarn. The fur can be placed along the edge of the curtain, as is usually the case with fringe.

Still wondering what can be made from an old sheepskin coat? Return to it after a while, when you decide what you need more - a new jacket or a stylish sofa deck.

Ladies with larger frames should be careful with the layering trend. A lot of clothing and decor will visually make the figure even larger, and will not hide flaws, as many women believe.

What can you do about stretched and worn out pockets?

Split pockets are the “trouble” of any fur coat or sheepskin coat. Not only do they get worn out a lot, but they also stretch and sometimes tear. It is quite difficult to restore them; it is much easier to do it as shown in this photo. Moreover, extra accessories will only further decorate your short fur coat.
