How to take measurements from a child for sewing children's clothing
When planning to sew a new outfit or carnival costume for a child, many find it difficult to determine how to take measurements. But if you remove them incorrectly, then all the work will no longer make sense.
Typical children's figures of a preschool child: basic measurements
The table presents: the name of existing measurements, their symbols and their measure of height, expressed in centimeters:

Beginner's Guide
Learn to sew online with Elena Krasovskaya
Children's patterns are somewhat different from adult clothing patterns.
First of all, children’s clothes should not restrict movement and should be freer. Considering that children's bodies grow quickly, children's patterns allow you to sew spacious clothes “for growth.”
In order to determine the size of your baby, you need to accurately and correctly take measurements of his figure.
Take your child's measurements accurately and quickly (children do not like to stay in one position for a long time).
Just like an adult when taking measurements, a child should be dressed in light clothing or underwear that fits close to the body.
To indicate the waist line, tie an elastic band or braid. Do not tighten the measuring tape, but do not hold it too loosely.
Height – take this measurement from the highest point of your head to the base of your feet. You can use your height meter (1);
Neck girth is a control measurement, take it at the base of the neck so as not to put pressure on it, but not too loose (7);
Chest circumference – remove loosely, the measuring tape goes under the arms to the front without hanging down (2);
Waist circumference – shoot through the deepest part of the torso. For babies and chubby children - along the most protruding part of the tummy (3)
Hip circumference – take pictures along the protruding points of the buttocks (4.);
Back length – from the seventh cervical vertebra to the waist line indicated by an elastic band (5);
Back width - measure the distance from one shoulder to the base of the other, above the top of the shoulder blades (2);
Front width - remove at a distance of 4-6 cm from the base of the neck, from one indentation of the armpit to another (2);
Sleeve length - remove from the base of the shoulder, holding a measuring tape, along the outside of the arm through a slightly bent elbow to the base of the hand (6);
Skirt length – remove from the waist line along the right side to the planned length of the skirt (9);
Dress length – remove from the middle of the back. Place it on the seventh cervical vertebra and lower it to the waist line, holding it, lower it further to the required length;
Pants length – remove from the waistline along the right side to the base of the legs. For short trousers or shorts - from the waist line along the right side to the planned length (8).
Children, just like adults, may have deviations from the typical figure - a protruding tummy, too straight or sloping shoulders, etc.
That's why it's important to take accurate measurements
If you draw up a design drawing yourself, taking into account changes in the child’s figure, you will get clothes that fit perfectly on the figure. And if you use ready-made patterns, then correctly taken measurements will help you accurately determine the size of the baby.

Child parameters, how to measure correctly?
The height of a child under 2 years old is measured in a lying position, after 2 years old - in a standing position.
- The volume of the chest and hips is measured with a measuring tape, applying it to the most protruding points. In this case, you need to take into account the protrusion of the abdomen.
- When measuring the waist, make sure that the child does not suck in his stomach.
- Sleeve length is measured from the base of the shoulder to the tip of the thumb. The child should raise his arms freely without exposing parts of his body.
- The inseam length is the distance from the groin to the ankle.
- The circumference of the neck is measured with a measuring tape, attaching it to the base.
Hand sizes for knitting mittens and gloves
There are two main sizes - palm circumference and arm height.
Advice
Measurements should be taken on both palms, as sizes may vary. In this case, we select the larger result for calculation.
To measure arm circumference, ask your child to raise his arm as if he is about to wave to someone.
The fingers should not be clenched, but in a normal straightened state. We measure across the palm below the little finger and above the thumb. In children, this number is usually from 3cm to 15cm, depending on age.
We measure the height from the end of the middle finger to the base of the palm.
For knitting children's mittens using ready-made models, a summary table of sizes can be useful.
When doing your own calculations, the following two tables will be useful.

Children's hats: size table
To determine the size of a children's hat, you need to measure the circumference of the child's head.
How to do it: Place a measuring tape on the most prominent point of the back of your head and on the brow ridges in front. In this case, the tape should neither stretch nor sag.
Some manufacturers write on the label - 46-48, 44-46. That is, they indicate the length of the head circumference in centimeters.

Detailed description of fit increases
The dimensions of the finished knitted product usually do not coincide with the measurements that we take to create the pattern drawing. This difference depends on several factors: on the purpose of the product, on the pattern with which the product is knitted, on the yarn used, and is called a loose fit allowance.
The fit of the finished product can be tight, very tight (“skinny”), standard in shape, loose and very loose.
A very tight fit, or as it is also called “tight”, “tight” is found when knitting T-shirts, tops, turtlenecks, and some styles of dresses. In this case, the knitted product should be smaller in size than the measurements taken: chest circumference, hip circumference, arm circumference. The exception is the waist circumference; there is always a slight increase at the waist, otherwise the product gathers into an “accordion” at the waist and rides up. The increase, or rather in this case the “decrease”, is up to 5 cm to the total girth. It depends on the chosen fabric pattern and the yarn used. For products made of mohair, for openwork patterns, the maximum “decrease” value is taken, since these patterns, and especially those made of mohair, are very stretchy. For cotton products knitted with stockinette stitch, a “decrease” value of 2 cm is taken to the total girth.
Tight fit - found when knitting dresses, women's pullovers and sweaters, children's T-shirts. In this case, the product should sit quite tightly on the figure, repeating its contours, without stretching, the design should not be deformed, but, at the same time, there is no sagging of the product anywhere on the figure, it tightly hugs the body from all sides. In this case, the allowance for loose fit in knitwear is zero. That is, we build the basis of the pattern exactly according to the measurements taken. Comfort during use of the finished item is ensured by the elasticity of the knitted fabric. It is also necessary to take into account the chosen pattern and the yarn used. For openwork patterns made of mohair, you can even make a “decrease” of up to 2 cm to the full value of the girth measurements.
Standard fit is the most common, found most often in dresses, women's, men's and children's pullovers and sweaters, and summer sweaters. This fit provides comfort in use, especially for summer clothes, since it does not fit tightly to the body and at the same time does not sag. Standard-fitting items can be worn either alone or in combination with other items, using layers in clothing. In this case, the product, of course, will fit without a loose fit. The increase in freedom of a standard fit is assumed to be up to 6 cm to the full girth. In the literature, when creating patterns for knitwear, this increase is most often adopted. Since in the literature most often the figure is constructed using half a figure, the measurement is taken in half size 3 cm.
A loose fit is typical for cardigans, jackets, coats, men's jumpers, which are worn over a men's shirt, sweaters for men, women and children. In a word, it is found in clothes that are put on over another, providing freedom and comfort of movement. The increase in looseness of fit is accepted up to 10 cm. The chosen size of the increase in this case depends little on the type of yarn used for knitting, since there is no stretching of the parts in volume, but depends on the size of the product being knitted. For a child you need to take a smaller size, for an adult - a larger one.
Very loose fit - found in clothes that should fit very loosely on the figure, for example, in sports models, outer coats and jackets, ponchos and even in men's jumpers, if the model allows for this. The increase in loose fit in this case is taken to be 13 cm and above to the full chest circumference.

Formulas for checking the accuracy of measurements taken
It is very difficult for non-professionals to immediately make accurate measurements. However, if mistakes are made, problems may arise when constructing a product drawing. Therefore, there are formulas for checking measurements:
- Sg1=Shg1+Shs+0.36Op ±0.5cm
- Cr2=Shg2+Shs+0.36Op ±0.5cm
- Сг2-Сг1=Шг2-Шг1 ±0.5cm
- Шг2=Шг1+(Сг2-Сг1) ±0.5 cm
Listed above are the basic measurements that are necessary to build basic structures. When modeling the product, additional ones will be needed, for example, the height of the collar stand, the width of the lapel, the height of the yoke, the size of the pocket, etc. They may vary depending on the model.
