Curtains with eyelets - advantages and disadvantages of eyelets, features of installing curtains. Selection of eyelet materials and fabric for curtains (photo + video)

Recently, the main trend in fashion is the desire for simplicity and functionality. That is why today many are interested in the design of curtains with eyelets. The minimalistic design of this interior element is gaining more and more popularity: ordinary hooks and clothespins are used less and less, losing practicality and attractiveness. Let's talk about what it is, what are the design features of eyelet curtains, and how to apply specific ideas to decorate a window using this technology.

What are eyelets?

The locking system comes from shipbuilding.

Eyelets were used to attach sails and made them much easier to control. The clasps consist of two parts that snap together and are easily attached to any fabric. They have round holes of different diameters.

Curtains with grommets are strung on a curtain, which is attached to the ceiling at the required height. Questions often arise about whether the fabric around the locks is torn.

No, the fabric is not deformed, no snags are formed, even the thinnest curtains such as organza and chiffon are suitable for use.

How to choose the right diameter

To select the correct eyelet diameter, you need to refer to the base, which will be threaded through the fastening rings. The thicker the lace or pipe (for example, a curtain rod) on which the fabric will be attached, the larger the diameter of the eyelet should be in order to easily slide along the base, not get stuck anywhere along the way and create a beautiful, even curtain fabric that will look great and refresh any room, giving it a special charm and cozy atmosphere.

The same distance is left between each eyelet - for curtains it can be 17 cm.

The diameter of the eyelets varies in the range from one and a half to fifty millimeters and it is often quite difficult to choose the most suitable option, because, although everyone understands that larger rings look more beautiful than small ones, too large eyelets on a thin cornice will create an unpleasant effect of “a lonely pencil in glass” - as if fasteners of this size are out of place here and it would be worth replacing them with a smaller option.

The minimum acceptable distance to the edge of the curtain is between 5 and 7 centimeters.

Plastic

Plastics in various colors, various sizes. They are lightweight and do not weigh down the fabric.

Curtains with eyelets with tulle look elegant and sophisticated. One of the advantages of this type of fastening is that it is not expensive.

Features of a rectangular eyelet with a fastening belt

A separate name is “rectangular eyelet with a fastening belt” - what is it and how to use it? Basically, this is the grommet that attaches the curtain to the frame. To do this, you need to put the grommet on a special bracket and secure this entire structure with a PVC strap. What is a staple? In itself, the bracket is a piece of fittings that helps secure the curtains to the frame, since an oval-shaped grommet is put on this very bracket.

The strap with a buckle is installed at the edge of the curtain and serves to hold the curtain folded.

The bracket can be rotary, which means that the “ear” of the bracket can change its position. There are also stationary brackets, whose position in space cannot be changed in any way. In general, swivel brackets with a fastening belt are much more popular. Why is it worth buying such a strap for eyelets? The reason is quite simple - the belt provides a more reliable connection between the curtain and the frame, as it firmly fastens the bracket and the grommet on which the curtain hangs.

It is used for attaching the awning to various surfaces by “self-fastening”.

Interior Design

The right fabric transforms a room beyond recognition. This takes into account the color of the ceiling and floor wallpaper, as well as furniture textiles. Decorative fittings can highlight the overall design and create original accents.

Check out several unusual and designer uses for it:

  • Metallic rings look great on dark curtains, giving classic curtains a modern look;
  • the material is selected in the same tone as the wallpaper, and the color of the cornice and eyelets matches the color of the floor.

In the living room and bedroom, eyelets are used for both heavy and light fabrics. Transparent material is reinforced with transparent tape or the organza at the top is combined with a denser fabric glued with non-woven fabric.

  • Dense fabrics require the use of strong metal rings.
  • Small plastic parts can be attached to lightweight fabrics.

Plastic for curtains is best suited for the kitchen, as it can be easily removed before washing, because such curtains most often require maintenance.

Window cornice

Choose a strip wider than the window opening; there should be at least 20 cm of margin on each side. Why do you need this length, you ask? Thanks to this distance, the window opening increases, visually expanding the space, and the curtains beautifully form even, smooth folds.

In order to hang a composition of curtains of different types, a double cornice is used. The second plank should be higher than the first or closer to the wall. Thanks to the different tiers, you can create interesting window decoration options.

Combination of cornice and eyelets

Depending on the purpose of the room, a cornice and corresponding eyelets are selected. They can combine or contrast, blend softly into the interior or be an accent spot.

The right choice of curtain fabric and optimal curtain height can completely transform a room. A large selection allows you to implement the most unusual solutions in the interior.

The main point that needs to be taken into account is the correctly selected diameter of the cornice and grommet to ensure soft and free sliding.

How many eyelets should I buy?

Remember the rule: the curtain must have an even number of eyelets. This allows the side edges of the curtain to point towards the window. If the number of eyelets is odd, then one side seam will “look” towards the room, and this does not look aesthetically pleasing.

In order to calculate the required number of eyelets, first of all, you need to find out the width of the curtain. The ideal distance between eyelets is 18 cm, but acceptable limits are from 15 to 22 cm. From the side edge of the curtain to the center of the first eyelet, the distance should be 5-7 cm.

There is a formula that will allow you to correctly calculate the required number of eyelets: n1 = (L- 2a): 18 + 1. Where n1 is the number of eyelets you need, L is the width of the curtain, and is the distance between the side edge of the curtain and the center of the first eyelet. n1 most often comes out as an odd fractional number, so it is rounded to n2, that is, the nearest even number.

Example of grommet calculation:

Imagine that your curtain is 200 cm wide, and the first eyelet will be at a distance of 6 cm from the side edge. n1 = (200cm – 2 x 6cm): 18 + 1 = 11.4 pcs.

n1 we get 11.4, we round it up to 12 and get n2. That is, for a curtain of 2 meters you need to buy 12 eyelets. And don’t forget to multiply n2 by 2 - you have two curtains.

Pros of use

The advantage of eyelets is:

Note!

Strength. The mechanism securely holds the curtains on the curtain rod.

Any fabric moves easily, does not cling, does not fall off, which cannot be said about hooks and clothespins.

Easy to use, you can remove and hang curtains in a matter of minutes.

Wear resistance. Even after a few years, a set of curtains with eyelets will not lose its sophistication and original appearance.

The main advantage of eyelets is the ability to create perfect folds. Each is precisely measured, with a given depth and are similar to one another.

Smooth, straight folds that look amazing on long floor-length curtains, on curtains intercepted in the middle.

In the photo of the curtains on the grommets you can see some monotony. They cannot be hung in a row on the same cornice. As a rule, these are single curtains or drapes.

But modern design and new items allow you to use different fabrics for any style, be it modern, high-tech, classic or country. Filament curtains with eyelets look very cozy and romantic.

For the kitchen, medium-length options are suitable; for the bedroom and nursery, you can choose translucent fabrics and satin, which create a pleasant twilight and a calm atmosphere in the room.

Types of materials for eyelets

When choosing eyelets, pay attention not only to their appearance, but also to their performance characteristics. Let us list the main materials from which eyelets are made.

Metal

Metal eyelets are durable, but they have one significant drawback: during washing, the metal (brass or steel) can oxidize, which will lead to the loss of the attractive appearance of not only the eyelets, but also the fabric, which becomes stained with rust. To avoid this, be sure to remove metal fasteners before washing.

Stainless steel

An excellent alternative to classic metal eyelets, as stainless steel is corrosion resistant. Suitable for design projects of townhouses or cottages in styles such as minimalism, loft or high-tech, where the presence of chrome parts is welcome. The disadvantage of such eyelets is their high cost compared to other types of fastenings.

Plastic

The best option in terms of price-quality ratio. Unlike iron eyelets, these are not subject to corrosion, so the curtains can be washed with them without worrying about the condition of the fasteners and fabric. They are easy to remove and put back on, have an affordable price and a large number of colors, so you can always choose the right mount for your curtains and the overall style of the room. Best suited for thin fabrics.

Tree

Wooden eyelets are used very rarely, since natural wood does not have very good characteristics compared to the options already listed. They are not as durable and become deformed during washing and drying. Take them only when the chosen direction requires it, for example Scandi or eco.

Selecting fabric for the grommet system

Eyelet locks attach well to any fabric, from thick, heavy to airy and transparent. The secret to using it on any canvas is in the way the mechanisms are installed.

Sewing curtains with eyelets is not difficult and requires minimal skills and simple tools.

If you feel empowered and want to transform the room and make it elegant, you can try making eyelet curtains with your own hands.

Detailed instructions will help you on how to sew curtains with eyelets. Ready-made kits do not always satisfy the customer’s parameters, but meanwhile for sewing you will need: scissors, fabric, eyelet tape, sewing machine, iron, eyelets.

How to Apply Grommet Tape

First you need to figure out what this grommet tape is. Eyelet tape is a special adhesive strip made of dense material, which is used to strengthen the upper edge of the curtain before installing eyelets on it. Eyelet tape is an alternative way to increase the density of fabric.

Reinforcing tapes come in one- and two-layer types. They differ in the number of pasted sides.

The eyelet tape should be quite wide: the diameter of the rings + 2-3 centimeters. The hot-melt material from which the tape is made can be quite dense for heavy curtains, or very thin and transparent for light curtains. Often, grommet tape is used as a backing for decorative elements that should be placed on the curtain.

To find the ideal width, add at least 2 cm to the outer diameter.

To glue the grommet tape, you first need to determine how many layers there are in it:

  • For a single layer, you can simply use an iron - such a tape will quickly connect to the fabric.
  • Double-layer tape is distinguished by the fact that glue is applied to both sides of the material and protected by a special heat-resistant mesh.

To attach grommet tape to curtains, follow these steps:

  1. Mark two widths of tape on the top of the curtain
  2. Fold the curtains inside out to each other and iron
  3. Take the tape and apply it, sticky side down, to the edge of the fold.
  4. Wait for the tape to cool down
  5. Remove excess material
  6. Sew the tape and curtain approximately in the middle of the width of the tape, this is necessary for a more durable fixation.

For thin curtains, choose transparent tapes.

Fabric consumption for sewing

First you need to calculate the amount of fabric for the curtains on the eyelets. Based on the length of the cornice: for curtains, fabrics are taken 1.5 times more, for tulle 2-2.5 times more. For hems: side – 6 cm from each edge, bottom – 10 cm, top – 25 cm.

Soft, smooth waves are obtained if you attach eyelets every 15 cm; for relief folds, choose a step of 20-25 cm. At your discretion and the desired effect, you can install fasteners with any step.

Before marking the fabric, the upper edge is sealed with tape or the fabric is folded. Markings are made for the eyelets and a hole is cut out with a margin of 3 mm along the edge, the mechanism is installed, and either latched or using a press.

There are removable models that can be easily replaced if deformed during washing. The side seams and bottom are sewn, the fabric is steamed and the finished products can be hung on the cornice.

In the photo of curtains with eyelets you can see new design solutions for any room. These include simple curtains and intricate, multi-layered variations.

In combination with lambrequins and tiebacks, the decor of the room will look stylish and impeccable.

Types of curtains

Curtains

Draperies are curtains made of thick or opaque fabric with a lining. That is, they are used to limit the access of light to the room, so they can look quite massive and voluminous. Curtains are made from both heavy fabrics, such as tapestry or jacquard, and light ones, such as silk or linen. Thanks to the use of eyelets, they look less bulky, falling in beautiful folds-waves.

Curtains

Very often the concepts of “drapes” and “curtains” are confused. If drapes are curtains made of thick fabric that are designed to darken a room, then curtains are exactly the opposite. They are made from translucent or transparent material: tulle, organza, veil. Curtains will not save you from bright sunlight, but will only diffuse it a little.

Muslin curtains

Universal curtains, which will decorate not only window openings, but also door openings, are suitable for zoning a room. These curtains look like noodles, so you won’t confuse them with anything else. They are decorated with beads, feathers or beads, and beautifully draped with the help of clamps.

Execution Sequence

  1. Using the selected material, the curtain is cut to size, taking into account allowances.
  2. At the top of the curtain, attach grommet tape or interlining, fold the fabric to the width of the grommets and iron.
  3. Hem the side seams.
  4. Then you need to mark the location of the eyelets.
  5. Cut the hole with scissors or a special tool.
  6. Insert the grommet and secure with the washer, pressing from above until it clicks.
  7. Hem the bottom of the curtain to the selected height.
  8. Iron the finished product.
  9. All that remains is to put the curtain on the cornice strip.

How are curtain rings different from each other?

If the rings had one appearance, then this type of curtains would not have been popular and, perhaps, would have long ago remained somewhere on the pages of interior history.

The size of the eyelets ranges from 30-55 mm, but in addition, you need to take into account the diameter of the circle.

Different rings, different designs

Rings are traditionally round for classic solutions and non-standard: it can be an oval, a triangle and other elements.

The eyelets are decorated in different ways: in some places rhinestones, gilding, leather inserts, and convex ornaments are visible as decoration. The surface of the product can be either matte or glossy.

As for the material of manufacture, there is metal, plastic and wood

Plastic is practical, quite cheap, and does not require special attention during operation. It will not rust after contact with water.

But if the curtains are made of heavy material, then it is better not to take plastic, giving preference to metal or wood.

How to choose the color of the eyelets?

The world of design rules has clear recommendations on the beneficial combination of colors, their mutual harmony or disharmony, color therapy, and even the effect of colors on human health. This has a direct bearing on creating a healthy microclimate in the room.

Green, summer curtain color

From the point of view of color harmony, for example, for brown fabrics, beige, blue or gray eyelets are suitable (according to the color compatibility table). In practice, you can use eyelets with gold plated or having a silvery steel tint.

Against the background of brown curtains, rings with artificially applied blackening or the vintage trend that is fashionable today will not seem pretentious.

Gray eyelets are universal. They will harmoniously combine with almost any color of curtains. True, some may seem rustic.

Ideal sun protection

It should be noted that light-colored eyelets visually increase the size of the holes and make them larger. Therefore, dark versions of curtains are rarely equipped with such details. They look organic with light, light curtains, especially those with small multi-colored prints.

Edging the holes for the curtain rod in bright contrasting colors (yellow, red, green, etc.) is acceptable in cases of curtain shades located in the same color scheme . For example, pink eyelets on a burgundy fabric base.

Orange color can lift your spirits

The second version of such combinations is in the avant-garde or boho style, where everything bright, contrasting, and attracting attention is welcomed. However, the window should not contain too many color contrasts.

The opposite view on the selection of eyelets is that the fastening method should be completely invisible . In this case, the illusion is created that the cornice penetrates the curtain itself, and not specially equipped holes. Such naturalness and simplicity benefit such design styles as hi-tech, minimalism, Bauhaus and others.
