Advantages and disadvantages of gabardine curtains, care features

Gabardine curtains: description with photos and reviews of the material. Gabardine - what kind of fabric for curtains is it: let's talk about the pros and cons of whether it allows light to pass through or not. Window decoration with textiles is the finishing touch to any interior. The choice of fabrics from which window curtains can be made is simply huge. Meanwhile, one of the most popular fabrics is gabardine, and what kind of fabric for curtains we will consider in more detail in our article.

How to calculate the size of a photo curtain

Since photocurtains are made to individual sizes, to order them, taking into account your own wishes, you need to independently calculate the size. When calculating the future product, the desire (or unwillingness) to have drapery on window curtains is taken into account. However, even fans of lush folds on the curtains should not order a curtain that is more than 1.5–2 times wider than the curtain rod, since the image may be distorted. Thus, folds will not spoil a photo image with a view of the sea or surf waves, but for images with fine and clear detail, for example, city landmarks, it is better to avoid luxurious draperies.

Photo curtains for different rooms are not the same:

• In the bedroom and living room, long floor-length curtains will look good - to calculate this parameter, add 3-5 cm to the distance from the cornice to the floor. However, it should be taken into account that photo curtains dragging along the floor can also distort the image.

• Curtains in the kitchen are traditionally shorter than in other rooms. It is important here that the entire window opening is closed, slightly overlapping the level of the window sill.

Description of gabardine fabric for curtains

Gabardine for curtains is produced in its pure form or combined with various types of fibers. Thus, the quality characteristics and appearance change.

Fiber TypesDescription
NaturalCotton, wool, silk are used.
MixedSeveral types of natural threads are used (cotton with wool), or a mixture of natural and artificial fibers.
SyntheticPolymer products have a characteristic shine. Products made from natural raw materials are matte.

For information! Artificial impurities reduce the cost of production, so the price of gabardine fabric for curtains is lower than its analogues. In addition, the threads enhance the strength characteristics of the material.

History of origin

The textile material has a beautiful history and no less original origin of its name. An English entrepreneur first became concerned with the creation of lightweight, waterproof textiles in 1880. The humid, rainy climate characteristic of England forced the owners of manufacturing enterprises to look for the optimal solution to allow people to feel comfortable in wet weather. Thomas Burberry (founder of the world-famous Burberry brand today) began the production of protective fabric, which was positively different from other materials in the absence of a “greenhouse effect”. A little later, the attractive properties of the textiles produced became available to all fashionistas and fashionistas of the 19th century. The presence of gabardine clothing in the wardrobe was considered a sign of luxury.

And the term itself comes from the name of a dense material (gaba) used for the production of capes in the distant past. The wordsmith Shakespeare first called the fabric gabardine, using it to describe the cape of one of the characters in his work “The Merchant of Venice.”

Briefly about colors

The first samples of gabardine could not boast of brightness. Since they were made from sheep's wool, the main shade was gray. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the palette also remained scarce: white, sand, black and the same neutral gray.

With the advent of dyes, the situation changed dramatically. Gabardine lends itself well to dyeing. Therefore, you can find a wide variety of shades on store shelves. But when sewing business attire, fabrics of calm tones still prevail. But everyday clothes can amaze with the richness of their colors.

Melange

Melange fabrics have become widespread. They are made using the same technology. But threads of different colors are used for the weft and warp. Shades can be closely related or contrasting. The result is interesting combinations that, together with an elegant hem, enhance the external aesthetics of the product. This technique is used when sewing workwear, business or casual outfits.

Tamitex curtains are cute, but unfortunately not without their drawbacks (( – Photo curtains reviews with photos

I decided to liven up the interior a little by decorating it with fun photo curtains. I think this is too much for a hall, but for a child’s room and for personal rooms it’s really great. I replaced the dull, boring curtains with photo curtains with some bright spring or New Year’s print and the mood in the room was completely different.

Both my sister and I are having a housewarming party soon, so we figured it out and decided that between the two of us we needed 11 sets of such curtains. Again, parents would also like to buy a couple of sets as a gift.

For a long time we thought about buying photo curtains made of gabardine or blackout. We decided to start with gabardine. Because it is much cheaper, and more practical, and the design is printed on it more clearly. Blackout, in turn, gives the best darkening; I don’t see any other advantages for this material. The drawing on it always seems to be shrouded in a foggy haze. If anyone is interested, I have attached photos of several samples below.

If you order photocurtains at retail prices, it turns out to be quite expensive. In the Ufa printing houses we were offered to make photo curtains, but, to be honest, we didn’t really like the fabric samples from the printing houses. On average, gabardine curtains were offered at prices ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 rubles. per set, blackout is exactly 2 times more expensive. Therefore, we decided to buy photocurtains in bulk, cooperating with several other friends. It turned out to be such a mini-joint venture.

We started by studying the reviews, but there weren’t many of them and they were very contradictory. Even expensive models have a lot of negative customer responses. Real photos of photo curtains are also rare. We eventually came across Tamitex curtains; they had a good selection of colors and the prices seemed quite reasonable. These are perhaps the most inexpensive photo curtains that you can find on the Internet; even ordering from Aliexpress turns out to be more expensive.

Compound

The percentage of synthetic and natural fibers in the fabric is determined by the manufacturer. Thick gabardine, items from which protect from bad weather, is created from different threads:

  • cotton;
  • silk;
  • linen;
  • viscose;
  • combined

Wool-blend fabric is often supplemented with synthetics. Most gabardine fabrics are impregnated with a substance that repels water.

Reviews

The material received a large number of approving opinions.

By studying reviews of gabardine fabric for curtains, you can make a general list:

  1. strength and wear resistance. The canvases are durable. Do not lose their original properties;
  2. variety of colors and textures. Even the most non-standard style is easily emphasized;
  3. ease of care. There is no need to iron bulky fabric;
  4. environmental friendliness. Thanks to air exchange, a comfortable microclimate is maintained in the room. The development of pathogenic insects is excluded.

General characteristics

Gabardine and blackout are distinguished by their high density . The materials do not transmit sunlight well, so they are suitable for any type of room. With their help, you can regulate natural light. This is especially true in rooms facing the sunny side.

The fabrics are quite durable, thanks to which they last a long time without changing shape or fading. The products can withstand many washing cycles, the fabric does not tear or stretch. After cleaning, no ironing is required, as the material does not wrinkle. Curtains can be hung directly on the curtain.

There is a wide selection of gabardine and blackout fabrics on the market. You can choose the color, texture, pattern and design. Saturation persists for several years. It is possible to tailor an individual product, at the request of the customer.

Blackout

This material was invented to darken rooms in cities where white nights often took place. Now, this function is very popular. Blackout can completely block natural light.

The fabric is very dense, thanks to which the material well absorbs street noise penetrating into the house. Provides protection from sunlight and extraneous sounds.

Blackout retains heat well . Even plastic windows sometimes blow cool air in winter. The material blocks the cold, maintaining a normal microclimate and comfort.

Some types of blackout have a reflective exterior . If the curtains are hanging in a room facing the sunny side, it will be stuffy and blinding inside. The reflective surface will prevent this and ensure a comfortable stay indoors.

For the production of fabric, only natural raw materials . Curtains do not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, so they can be hung in a child's room.

Blackout is fire resistant and does not support combustion . The product ensures safety in rooms with flammable processes and objects.

Curtains made of thick fabric have a long service life . Over the years, the material does not lose its shape or color saturation. With proper care, all properties will remain for a long time.

The shape of the material is poorly susceptible to stretching, creasing and shrinking. The lines remain crisp and even even after several brushing cycles. The color does not fade, does not wash, does not fade. The brightness is maintained for a long time, which has a positive effect on the overall interior.

Care

So, gabardine is easy to care for. But you need to follow some rules.

Be sure to study the composition of the curtains, since the care of fabric made from natural and synthetic materials is somewhat different.

  • If the composition is dominated by wool, then the fabrics must be dry cleaned. You won't be able to clean them properly at home.
  • All other curtains can even be washed in a machine.
  • You can use mild stain removers.
  • Feel free to turn on the spin mode in the machine - it will not lead to deformation of the fabric.
  • It is not at all necessary to iron the fabric, but it is important to dry it in a straightened state.

Care Tips

The material is not considered capricious. Thanks to the water-repellent coating, dirt does not penetrate deep into the threads.

However, when cleaning products, it is important to take into account the features of the composition:

  • Models containing wool require dry cleaning. It is difficult to follow the cleaning technology on your own. Other types are machine washable;
  • use liquid detergents. It is allowed to add mild stain removers without chlorine;
  • There are no restrictions on the number of revolutions during spinning. The fabric is resistant to deformation;
  • dry in a well-ventilated area. Pre-straighten;
  • Ironing is optional. The curtains will return to their original shape under their own weight.

Note! The technology for removing contaminants depends on the components. The manufacturer indicates the processing details on the product tag. Before use, carefully study the recommendations.
