The tulip skirt is rightfully considered one of the most feminine and elegant models among the wide variety of this type of outerwear. The skirt got its name from the obvious similarity of the cut and style to the shape of an inverted tulip head. It hugs the waist, smoothly flows around the hips without restricting movement, and gently tapers downwards. If at the dawn of its appearance and spread this style of skirt could be found exclusively in the classic version - a length just above the knees and the obligatory smell imitating flower petals superimposed on each other - now you can see a huge variety of tulip skirts.
Such variations of the skirt are achieved through the use of folds, elastic bands, both at the top of the waistband and at the bottom of the hem, flounces, pockets, bows, and multi-layered texture. The length of the tulip skirt also varies significantly. It can be mini, medium length, knee-length, or even extended to the shin.

Who should wear a tulip skirt?
Among all the styles of skirts, the tulip skirt is the only one that has an amazing property: it can decorate both a thin girl and a curvy woman. For the first, it will help to visually give a more seductive volume in the hips, without introducing disharmony into the overall slender silhouette, and for the second, it will gently veil excess fluffiness in the area of the hips and upper legs, while creating an exceptionally feminine and elegant image. A tulip skirt can look harmonious on overweight girls, provided that the top and shoes are chosen correctly. Since there are many variations in length and style, girls and women of any height and build will be able to choose their ideal option.

Story
The history of the tulip skirt began in 1954; its creator is considered to be the legendary designer Pierre Cardin, who came up with this simple silhouette, trying to repeat the contour of an inverted tulip cup. Fashion historians claim that the creation of this extravagant model was greatly influenced by the strict and conservative pencil skirt. The pencil skirt enjoyed particular popularity and universal recognition in the 1970s, and when interest in it disappeared, girls made tulip skirts their fetish, giving the figure elegance and femininity.
The style of the tulip skirt combines the general style of the puffball skirt and the laconicism of the pencil skirt, thereby smoothing out the excessive pomp of the first and the dry design of the second. In the 1980s, the tulip skirt firmly established its position in world fashion. Currently, skirts of this cut continue to delight their fans with their beauty and unusualness, because from year to year famous fashion designers come up with new ways to decorate them.
How to create the perfect look
To create a harmonious look with a tulip skirt, you can use the tips of stylists:
- Do not combine two things in an ensemble with prints; one item of clothing with a pattern is allowed - either the bottom or the top.
- The more spectacular the bottom, the simpler the top should be and vice versa. If the skirt has decorative details or folds, then the top should be discreet.
- It is better to tuck blouses, shirts, and tops inside. An office look can be complemented with a short jacket or cardigan, mid-thigh length. Long sweaters, jackets, cardigans do not go well with a skirt.
- The longer the skirt, the higher the heel should be. Short skirts can be combined with shoes without heels. Thick tights that match your shoes will help to visually lengthen your legs.
You can follow fashion recommendations, because it is thanks to informal decisions that new ideas are born in the fashion world. The main thing is to feel comfortable.
An elegant, feminine tulip skirt fits perfectly into the wardrobe of a modern woman. With it you can create original everyday and holiday looks, and the presented fashion review will help you make the right choice.
Current colors
Tulip skirts can have different colors. True, there are several tones that are especially in demand this season. They should be considered in more detail.
Black
A black skirt is a universal option. It is suitable for creating a lot of different images. You can safely wear it not to study or work, but also to a party or a regular walk. With the help of an extraordinary style, you can effectively emphasize your own individuality.
Red
A red skirt will help you create a spectacular look that attracts special attention. It is ideal for a bright exit. For example, you can safely wear it to the cinema or club, to a party or meeting with friends. True, this does not mean at all that you cannot appear in the office in such clothes. You just need to choose the right other wardrobe items to create a strict but effective look.

What to wear with a fashionable tulip skirt
Tulip skirts for the 2014-2015 season demonstrate an enviable variety of fabrics from which they are made. In addition, all styles can also be divided into business and elegant, ideal for the office and formal formal events, stylish and ultra-fashionable, looking harmonious in a nightclub and at a party, glamorous and vintage, suitable for extraordinary events and creative activities. That is why the question of what to wear with such a skirt should be decided based on its purpose, fabric, length and general style of the woman. So, for example, a classic blouse, necessarily tucked into the waistband of the skirt, preferably made of light translucent material, will go well with a discreet business skirt with a wrap in dark blue and gray tones.

However, you should follow the rule: the more decorated and rich in details your skirt is, the simpler the top should be. It is worth remembering that such skirts look great in combination with high heels. Cropped models can also look good in shoes with solid soles, creating a youthful sporty look.

Who can wear a skirt like this?
First of all, girls with a pear body type. Girls with large hips will look great in a skirt of this style, but under one condition. Its hem should be as tight and narrow as possible.
But in general, this item of clothing is universal, suitable for ladies with any figure, although with some comments. A tulip skirt will fit well on girls who are not too thin, but not too plump, of average height. She will emphasize feminine forms and a good figure. For neat little inches, such a skirt will help add volume to the hips, and for ladies with a full body, it will help hide imperfections.
Peculiarities
Info! The name of the tulip skirt is due to its extraordinary shape. It visually resembles the bud of a flower of the same name. It is narrow at the waist, clearly widens at the hips, and narrows again at the bottom.
The predecessors of this wardrobe item are pencil skirts and puffballs. The first of them gained popularity in the seventies of the last century, and the second in the eighties. True, if the pencil style is well known to all fashionistas, then the puffball skirt should be considered in more detail. In this case, the bottom wraps quite tightly around the knee area. This effect is achieved due to the presence of elastic inserts or elastic bands. In all other areas, clothing remains loose.
Puffball is not a universal outfit. It is not suitable for everyone. Most likely, this was the reason for the loss of popularity of this product. It was replaced by more practical and comfortable tulip skirts.
Models of this midi length shape are considered classics. They are slightly below the knee, with a scent, giving the impression that flower petals are lying one on top of the other.
The 2021 tulip skirt was already distinguished by a variety of models and lengths, and special finishing. Even then, long and short skirts became fashionable, and not just mid-length ones. Products began to be decorated with all kinds of decor in the hem and waist area, equipped with flounces, bows, pockets and all kinds of frills. Even a multi-layer effect turned out to be appropriate.
High waist tulip skirt
The high-waisted tulip skirt has become a hit of the season. It not only stands out from the numerous models on the hips, but also makes a woman sexier and slimmer. Such a skirt not only visually makes the waist narrower and more feminine, but also emphasizes the chest. In the 2014-2015 clothing collections, it can be noted that high waists are found in both classic knee-length skirts and mini versions. At the same time, a high waist is necessarily emphasized either by a contrasting color fabric, or by a spectacular bow, belt, or tie. Of course, such a model will look perfect on a slender woman of average height. However, on moderately plump women, with the right selection of a blouse or top, as well as the use of high-heeled or wedge shoes, a high-waisted tulip skirt can look very appetizing and sexy.

Modeling
When all the measurements have been taken, you can start cutting. The standard direct model is taken as a basis. It is a kind of frame for a “tulip” skirt, the pattern of which needs to be created. There is a step-by-step algorithm for making a sample for beginners:
- The image of the straight skirt pattern (it is easy to construct according to freely available recommendations) should be transferred to paper according to your dimensions.
- The drawing should be adjusted to form the selected model. To do this, you need to slightly narrow the side edges of the workpiece.
- The waist height can also be adjusted; for this purpose, you need to increase or decrease the corresponding sides.
- Next, from the top of the pattern down, as well as along the front and back, lines should be drawn, thus dividing the parts. These will be the incision sites.
It’s not difficult to create a pattern for a “tulip” skirt with pockets; just slightly modify the existing pattern of a classic product.
If we talk about adapting a finished pattern model, then everything will be much more complicated. The main thing you need to understand is that each size differs from the previous one by 2 cm. Along the waist line, the interval up to size 52 is 2 cm, then - 3 cm, along the hips up to 54 - 2 cm, after - 2.5 cm. Directly according to the pattern two baselines should be established. They will remain stationary, but the drawing will change based on them. For a skirt, these base lines are the hips and the middle of the front and back panels. After installing them, you can begin changing the patterns. To do this, increase the product to the sides in proportion to the required size.

On a date
For a romantic date, opt for a coffee, mint, lemon or pink skirt; top - top or shirt with a print, contrasting or vice versa, pastel color, light sandals, sandals - a stylish look is ready. To a friendly party
Feel free to wear brighter colors, with lurex and rhinestones: red, orange, purple, indigo - combined with a white, black, chocolate top, completely covered in sparkles - it’s simply impossible to go unnoticed. For shoes, stiletto heels or high platforms are preferable. You can choose a tulip skirt for the office, it will be knee-length, made of fairly dense fabric: – cotton; – flax; – wool;
Cutting and assembly
After constructing the pattern, you need to cut the fabric and sew the parts. The whole process should be carried out calmly, without haste. Otherwise, the product may be damaged. First you need to prepare:
- textile;
- threads to match, needles, pins;
- scissors;
- sewing machine;
- lightning;
- soap or chalk;
- iron.
If decoration is planned on the product, then before sewing the tulip skirt, you need to prepare the necessary elements for decoration. After this you can start working:
- The material is pre-ironed on both sides.
- Next, the pattern is placed on the fabric and secured with pins.
- The drawing is transferred to the material, allowances are added at the waist of 1 cm, on the sides - 2 cm, at the bottom - 3 cm.
- The parts are carefully cut out along the drawn lines.
At each step, the seams of the product should be ironed. If desired, you can add decorative elements: this way there is a greater chance that the finished product will meet all expectations. The skirt must be washed, dried and ironed.
On the back halves we chop and stitch the darts, after which we iron them to the middle. The yoke parts are sewn to the panel parts. The side and back seams are overlocked or zigzag. The back halves are folded face to face and fastened with a stitch to the mark for sewing in the zipper.
The side seams are pressed
The bottom of the skirt is finished with facing
The yoke and lining pieces are joined. The edge is cut to turn inside out to create a neat seam.
Allowances along the waist line towards the lining are sewn in. View from the inside
Tulip skirt for obese women
As already mentioned, a well-chosen tulip skirt in combination with a beautiful tight-fitting or light translucent top will look beautiful on a full figure. Soft, flowing, gently enveloping fabric will hide excesses in the figure and emphasize feminine soft shapes. Particular attention should be paid to high-waisted models. The belt of such a skirt will visually make your waist thinner and emphasize your bust. A more suitable length option would be a midi model - that is, just below the knee.

Length Variations
The classic, as already mentioned, is midi length, slightly below or above the knee. True, short skirts have also become in demand this season. They are ideal for slender fashionistas.
Long models, as a rule, are created with a wrap, as well as a cutout in the center of the front of the product. The length in this case reaches the shin. Floor options are not created in this case. This length is inappropriate for this style.
Description of style
The skirt is so named because of its resemblance to an inverted tulip bud. It hugs the waist tightly, flows along the hips, creating volume, and tapers downwards . The effect of half-open petals is achieved through scent, light folds or drapery. The belt and hem of the skirt can be laconic or decorated with various frills, bows, flounces, and pockets.
Length varies from mini to midi. A tulip skirt with a train looks interesting, which from the back resembles a floor-length skirt, and is very shortened in front. Dresses with tulip skirts are very popular, including wedding and evening ones.
Tulip skirt with pockets
One of the most common and favorite options for a tulip skirt is a skirt with pockets. At the same time, pockets can be either internal or overhead, blending with the fabric or, conversely, attracting attention with a spectacular decor. A skirt with pockets can create both a business style, perfect for a woman in the office or at work, as well as a stylish, light casual look. When choosing a style, you should pay attention to the fact that some tulip skirts with pockets can visually deform your figure somewhat.

Fabric selection
When choosing fabric for a skirt, you need to consider the following nuances:
- purpose of the product;
- desired shade;
- the time of year when you plan to wear a tulip skirt;
- features of the figure.
In addition, the fabric you choose should be of such quality that it does not shrink during the first wash. Tulip skirt models that are sewn from flowing, well-draped material that can form beautiful folds will look ideal. The following fabrics have all of the above properties:
- velvet;
- satin;
- viscose;
- jacquard;
- silk;
- cotton.
In this case, it is desirable that the material has a small amount of synthetic fibers in its composition. The following technique will help you get rid of any doubts when choosing: you should squeeze the fabric you like in your hand and watch when it straightens out. If it smooths out immediately or remains compressed for a long time, then it means that it is not suitable for sewing this model. Ideally, the material should return to shape after five minutes.
Silk, cotton, satin, jacquard, wool, and suit fabrics are suitable for making an office tulip skirt. The material should hold its shape well, not be transparent, and not fit the body too tightly. Summer products can be sewn from silk, satin, viscose, chiffon, and cotton fabrics. A thing intended for hot weather should allow air and moisture to pass through well and not be tight to the body.
If you have little experience in sewing products, then it is better to avoid complex patterns that require matching on the material.

The nuances of sewing a wrap model
It is important to follow all the recommendations and nuances of tailoring a product for smell. This manufacturing stage is no less important than constructing the pattern and cutting the “tulip” skirt. Stages of work:
- After basting and ironing the folds on the panels, the darts should be processed.
- Process pockets (if any): fasten, stitch and overcast. Each stage must be accompanied by ironing of the parts.
- Overlock the edges with an overlocker or edge the side and middle seams, having previously ironed them.
- The bar should also be ironed lengthwise, then the bottom should be treated using non-woven fabric. Once finished, you can stitch it down and overcast it.
- Combine the panels and sweep.
- Sew the waistband to the front and back of the skirt.
- Press the seams.
- Stitch and press the side seams. After which you can process the middle seam on the back in the same way. It is also better to baste the zipper.
- When the seams are processed, it is recommended to immediately try on the skirt, checking the fit along the middle seam.
- Finish the middle seam, stitch the zipper, bottom waistband and bottom of the product.
The “bud” skirt is a beautiful, fashionable, feminine thing. It is easy to make and goes well with almost any clothing. Thanks to the special cut, this product is suitable for different body types. For this simple reason, every girl should get such a model.
Tulip skirt: patterns
As a rule, a classic tulip skirt is cut based on a straight skirt pattern. To do this, firstly, cut the pattern into several strips, not reaching the bottom line 1 mm; secondly, they push the upper part of the pattern apart to form folds. The amount of expansion depends on the desired depth of the folds, or the splendor of the assembly.
Pattern of a tulip skirt with a belt
To get a tulip skirt with a yoke, when modeling the latter, the yoke line must be drawn through the top of the dart or darts. Thus, we draw the line of the future coquette. Let's cut the pattern along it and close the darts. We do the same with the lower part of the skirt as in the first case.

What is the difference from other models?
The classic tulip skirt has a length above the knee and voluminous pleats at the waist. There are options with and without a wrap, voluminous pockets, asymmetrical design lines and draperies, but in any design the silhouette will resemble the bud of an unopened tulip. This type of skirt has become a source of inspiration for many fashion designers; the most popular models are options with a high or low waistline made from jacquard fabrics.
Inspiration from the latest collections
If you look at photos from the shows of the latest collections, it is not difficult to notice that they were simply full of variations on the theme of the tulip skirt. The focus was on models made of shiny textiles - satin and silk, as well as jacquard fabrics with a rich golden pattern. For everyday wear in the fall-winter season, fashion designers offered styles made of denim, corduroy, suede, leather and suit wool. Popular in collections are models made of melange textiles, as well as boiled thick wool. All this splendor is suggested to be worn with ankle boots, low ankle boots and boots with tractor soles.
For plus size ladies
The tulip is perfect for plus size girls, if you follow a few simple rules when choosing.
- Minimum length to knee.
This option effectively hides extra inches in the hip area, revealing slimmer knees and ankles.
- The presence of draperies and soft folds in the abdominal area.
It is better to concentrate the maximum bends of the product not on the protruding part of the hips, but to place them in the area of a slightly full tummy. For ladies with chic shapes, a tulip bud will suit a minimally opened one, without pockets or flashy decorations.
- Medium or high heel.
Experiments on combining feminine skirts with sneakers are best left to ladies of delicate shapes. A high heel will visually tighten the figure in the buttocks area, improve posture and the overall impression of the image.

Measurements and calculations
Before sewing a tulip skirt, you need to correctly determine the length of the future item and take measurements. The following parameters will need to be measured:
- waist circumference at the most protruding points;
- hip girth.
All parameters should be measured as carefully as possible. In addition, you need to take into account an additional 1-2 cm for hemming the fabric. For the convenience of subsequent construction of the pattern, it is better to immediately write down the parameters in half size - as half girth.
If you want to create a narrowed hem on the product, you will additionally need to measure the circumference of your legs in the area of the bottom of the skirt. This parameter will be needed for the subsequent insertion of an elastic band, which will provide the necessary comfort when walking.
If you have an old unnecessary skirt, you can copy the pattern from it. To do this, you will need to unravel the fabric at the seams and trace the resulting details on graph paper. This method is more suitable for beginner craftswomen.
