Differences between double and Euro bed linen

Bed linen is a very important thing in everyday life, although we often do not take it into account. But it would be worth it, because our full, healthy sleep depends on it! Of course, the material of the linen plays an important role; it must be chosen very carefully and it is advisable not to skimp on natural fabrics. Because by choosing underwear made from cheap synthetic material, you can jeopardize your health and get unpleasant consequences in the form of allergies.

In addition, the size of the bedding set plays an important role. It determines how evenly and smoothly the bed will lie. If you don’t choose the right size of linen, then when you try to squeeze the blanket into the duvet cover, and the pillows into the pillowcases, they will simply gather into an “accordion”, and a short or too long sheet will bristle with every movement. Which in general will create an uncomfortable feeling and you will not be able to fully relax and sleep in such a bed!

Quite often we can see different types of bedding on sale, so the question of their differences is always of interest to everyone who has ever been faced with the choice of bedding. So, in order to understand how the “Euro” bedding set differs from a simple “Double” bed linen, you must first understand what they are.

Double bedding set

Bed linen of this format is suitable for a comfortable stay for two people. The set consists of: a sheet (180 by 210 cm), a duvet cover (identical in size with the sheet) and 2 pillowcases (most often 70 by 70 cm, rarely 60 by 60 cm). This size will be most appropriate for a standard mattress with a length of 190 - 200 cm and a width of 160 - 180 cm. The duvet cover in the set is designed for a standard blanket measuring 175 by 205 cm.

Standards, general information

First, let's talk about double bed linen, its dimensions in centimeters, which are considered the official standard. As an example, let’s take a table with parameters according to GOST from 2005, valid for Russia and some countries of the former USSR. Pay attention to the minimum width of the sheet for a double set: only 138 cm. This is easily explained by GOST standards (also 2005) for household furniture, according to which the minimum width of a double bed is 110 cm.

Parameters of double bed linen according to GOST:

At the moment, textile manufacturers are not obliged to strictly follow the dimensions of a double bed linen set, the standards of which are prescribed in GOST: these figures are rather advisory in nature. Today there are no strict regulations regarding the parameters of bed linen in other countries that import bed linen to Russia. Therefore, what today we call “standard sizes” are parameters based on reality: the width of a bed or sofa, which is usually called a double, starts from 140 cm.

Euro linen set

This set is becoming increasingly popular among today's housewives and attracts them with its increased size. If you take a standard Euro set, it includes a duvet cover (most often measuring 200 by 220 cm, but it can also be 205 by 225 cm or 225 by 245 cm), a sheet (often it is the same size as the duvet cover, but it can be and square shape - 220 by 220 cm, or enlarged - 240 by 280 cm), and a different number of pillowcases - from two to four pieces, non-standard rectangular shape (50 by 70 cm).

Euro linen set

It is interesting that pillowcases can differ in size (one pair is 50 by 70 cm, and the second is 70 by 70 cm), shape and even color. These options are ideal for large modern beds and allow them to be used on almost any blanket and pillow.

Depending on the size difference, Euro bed linen can be divided into several types:

  • Euro standard: duvet cover (210 x 175 cm), sheet (220 x 240 cm), pillowcases (50 x 70 cm, 70 x 70 cm).
  • Euro double set: duvet cover (220 x 200 cm), sheet (220 x 250 cm, 240 x 260 cm), pillowcases (50 x 70 cm, 70 x 70 cm).
  • Euro maxi (King Size): duvet cover (220 x 240 cm), sheet (240 x 220 cm, 240 x 260 cm, 260 x 280 cm), pillowcases (50 x 70 cm or 70 x 70 cm).

Bed linen sizes

Bed sets come in several types, with features such as the number of items and their individual sizes.

Sometimes it's very easy to get confused.

Moreover, the possibility of choosing imported products brings additional difficulties, since different countries adhere to their own standards.

All bedding sets, with the exception of those sewn to individual orders, can be classified into one of 5 standard types.

Single and one-and-a-half beds

The kit includes:

  • 1 or 2 pillowcases depending on the model.

As the name suggests, the set is designed for one, but today traditional single sets are becoming increasingly rare.

1 to 5 bedroom sets are very popular, which are suitable not only for one person, but also for a married couple who sleeps in the same bed.

Double and Euro

A double set features larger duvet covers and sheets, and can include two or four pillowcases and one duvet cover.

The set is suitable for both singles and married couples.

The Euro size differs from the double size only in larger sizes, the equipment remains exactly the same.

Family models are equipped with 2 one-and-a-half duvet covers.

Designed for married couples who prefer to cover themselves with different blankets.

Euro Maxi

The size of the duvet cover in this set is 220x240 cm, and the size of the sheet can reach 260x260 cm.

Pillowcases in Euro maxi sets come in two standards: 70x70 and 50x70 and are usually supplied in the amount of 4 pieces.

Classification

The classification of bed linen by size in Russia and in Europe differs not only in numbers: European linen is marked with symbols in English.

  • Single bed linen may be designated as "1-bed" or "".
  • Double - “2-bed”, “full” or “double”.
  • "Queen" is the equivalent of the Russian "Euro".
  • One-and-a-half sets are designated as “1.5-bed” and “-long”.
  • You can also sometimes find “king-size” sets, which are essentially “three-bedroom”.
  • The designation “baby bed” is typical for linen for the cribs of small children and newborns.

When choosing bedding for babies, it is important to consider:

Differences between European and Double bedding sets

The main difference between the above-mentioned sets is the size of the duvet cover and sheets, which in the European version are larger than in a regular double! The number of pillowcases also differs - the Euro package can contain more than two of them, and different in size and color than in the double version we are used to. When the set contains four pillowcases at once, then one pair of them is square, they are simple and plain, matching the color and pattern with the sheet, and the other pair is rectangular, more luxurious and repeats the design of the duvet cover.

Difference in configuration

Euro bed linen differs from a double set primarily in size and configuration. The European version, which is sold on the Russian market, has more pillowcases. Historically, in the post-Soviet space, bed linen sets were produced with square pillowcases 70x70 cm, while in European countries the pillows are rectangular.

When the fashion for the “euro” reached us, foreign manufacturers added another set of pillowcases. Thus, the set consists of 6 items:

  • large duvet cover;
  • large sheet;
  • square pillowcases - 2 pieces;
  • rectangular pillowcases - 2 pieces.

Pillowcases can differ not only in size, but also in color. So, the design of one pair can repeat the design of the duvet cover, while the other can be in a single-color format, matching the tone of the sheet. Variations may be different, the point is that, unlike a double set, the European set has more accessories.

There are 4 pieces of linen in a standard double set:

  • standard double duvet cover;
  • standard double sheet;
  • pillowcases - 2 pieces.

When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the size of pillowcases; in recent years, manufacturers have begun to produce linen with pillowcases and rectangular pillows in a double version. By the way, two sets of pillowcases are often in demand at once - in this regard, the Euro option comes to the rescue.

And be sure to pay attention to the size of other components of the kit. When choosing, proceed from the dimensions of your bed - it’s very uncomfortable to sleep when the sheet bristles with any movement, and the pillows or blanket bunch up. This will definitely not add to your comfort and will not allow you to sleep normally in such a bed.

Tips for choosing underwear

In order to choose the right set of linen that will match the size of your bed, before purchasing, be sure to measure the exact dimensions of your bed, pillows and blanket! And also carefully study the size information on the packaging of the selected set, since different manufacturers can change the length or width of the product at their discretion, hoping that many buyers are unaware of the true sizing standards!

Manufacturing materials

Natural, mixed, and synthetic materials are suitable for sewing family bedding sets. Traditionally, cotton, linen, and silk were used for sewing, but modern synthetic fabrics, which have shown their advantages in practice, are also successful. From these materials, using special methods of weaving threads of different sections each time, the following fabrics are made:

  1. Satin
    . Made from cotton threads and synthetic fibers. Many properties of the fabric depend on the method and density of the thread weave: luxury sateen is especially durable, satin velvet is warmer. Satin linen can be distinguished by its smooth surface with a slight shine; it is quite dense. Available in several versions: bleached, plain-dyed, printed. Satin family sets can withstand more than 300 washes without losing their qualities. Bedding begins to fade a little long after the start of use.
  2. Jacquard
    . The basis of large-patterned fabric is made up of differently interwoven threads, and the thicker they are, the stronger the fabric. Before weaving, the threads can be dyed - this is one of the options for applying patterns to the fabric. The second method of coloring is to first apply a printed impression and then special dyes. Jacquard fabrics can be made from natural or chemical (polyester) fibers, mixed materials. Family sets made of jacquard are durable, strong, excellently retain paint, wear-resistant, and have almost no stretch.
  3. Calico
    . The traditional raw material for it is cotton, but recently artificial fibers have been used to produce this fabric. Calico bed linen can withstand many washes with virtually no loss of pattern brightness, and its cost is relatively low. Casual and festive family sets are sewn from calico, differing in the density of the fabric. This fabric feels slightly stiffer than satin to the touch.
  4. Poplin
    . They are usually made from cotton, less often from chemical raw materials, and sometimes from silk. Poplin linen is soft to the touch, retains color well, retains heat, and wrinkles slightly. Bed linen does not require special care and is relatively inexpensive with excellent performance characteristics. For family bedding sets, fabrics with a 3D effect can be used, which is achieved through diagonal weaving of threads.
  5. Silk
    , natural or synthetic. Natural silk obtained from silkworm cocoons is the most luxurious and expensive option for bed. Silk bed linen was used as a medicinal product in ancient China. Such family sets have a lot of advantages, but require special care and can slide off the bed. Many qualities of natural raw materials have artificial analogues, for example viscose. Externally, they also flow, have a smooth surface, have good hygroscopicity and breathability, and their cost is much lower than natural raw materials.
  6. Atlas
    . The fabric has a smooth front surface with glossy tints; in appearance it is similar to silk, but its structure is denser. Satin weaving threads are used in production. To obtain satin, not only silk, but also cotton and synthetic fibers can be used, which significantly increase the wear resistance and strength of finished family sets.
  7. Terry linen
    . It is made from cotton, linen, bamboo, synthetic fabrics, and their combinations in different ratios are allowed. The pile can be one-sided or two-sided, with a relief pattern, trimmed. Such family sets have a light massage effect, are stronger than calico textiles, can withstand 300 washes without loss of quality, and do not require special care.
  8. Percale
    . One of the varieties of premium cotton fabrics.
  9. Tencel
    (lyocell). A natural fabric made from eucalyptus fibers and feels similar to silk.

How to measure your bed correctly

Before you go shopping for this product, you first need to measure the mattress, blankets and pillows, only in this case you will select a set of the right size. Now we’ll tell you how to measure everything correctly.

For the correct length and width, use a measuring tape. When measuring a sleeping place, that is, a mattress, its height (about 200 mm) is also added to the width and length on all sides, in this case you get the footage of the sheet. In order to determine the size of the duvet cover, you should measure the width and length of the blanket, but add about 50 mm on each side so that the purchased duvet cover is not small. The dimensions of pillowcases are determined simply; measure the length and width of the pillows, adding 10 millimeters on each side.

Only with correctly measured measurements will you select the appropriate type of accessories for your family bed.

Overview of species

Unlike a double sheet, the Euro size is much larger; this product is designed not only for a large bed with a thick orthopedic mattress; a Euro sheet is also perfect for a wide folding sofa.

With and without elastic

Please note that when choosing a Euro-sized sheet with an elastic band, you need to take into account the height of the mattress. And the width of a regular sheet (without elastic) should be sufficient to be folded under the mattress. That is why it can be 2.6 m, 2.7 m, or 2.8 m wide.

These days, fitted sheets are especially popular. This popularity is due to the fact that our compatriots began to buy large Euro-size beds or exchange their old ones for new ones with high spring mattresses.

It is extremely inconvenient to make such beds with regular double sheets; they are not wide enough and constantly “pull together” during sleep. Therefore, with the replacement of the bed, housewives begin to buy new and larger bedding.

A classic fitted sheet with an elastic band is suitable for any beds and mattresses; this product is inexpensive. By the way, you can often buy such a product individually, and if you are lucky enough to match the main bedding set, you will receive a chic set.

Some housewives deliberately alter regular sheets and make them with elastic just because they fit well on the mattress. However, when making such alterations, you need to take into account the height of the mattress. The slightest missing millimeters will lead to the product coming off the mattress and bunching up and crumpling, which will create discomfort for the vacationer.

A sheet with an elastic band does not need to be ironed; when stretched, it smoothes itself out and gives the bed a presentable appearance. Even if hard folds appear after washing, they will not be visible when pulled onto the mattress and fixed.

More and more housewives are giving preference to European sheets with an elastic band, since they are easier to care for, they dry faster after washing and always retain their presentation on the bed. From all this we can conclude that fitted sheets are more practical than regular standard sheets.

According to the material of manufacture

These sheets are made from various fabrics, just like bedding sets in general. Let's look at the most popular materials:

  • satin;
  • calico;
  • percale;
  • poplin;
  • chintz;
  • ranfors;
  • flannel.

Summer options include chintz, satin and percale options. These fabrics have a cool feel, reminiscent of a silk base (percale and satin). For winter holidays, give preference to denser fabrics - calico, flannel.

The market also offers bedding made from polysatin based on synthetic fibers. This is linen from the economy series; many note that such products “tint” the water during the first wash. But at the same time, manufacturers of such linen do not recommend pouring vinegar into the machine or using chlorine-containing products when washing.

Choose a natural base in bedding; synthetics are not suitable for everyone and can cause allergies on the body. Simple fabrics such as chintz and poplin are without aristocracy and gloss, but they are soft, wear-resistant and will not cause allergic reactions.

Satin and percale are considered more luxurious fabrics, with the shine of silk and claims to be expensive. Such sheets will cost more in a one-time sale, and a set of bed linen will be much more expensive than a set of poplin and chintz.

It is not always indicated that in this color the set, for example, comes without a sheet. But still, do not forget that this is a specific place where everything needs to be double-checked more than once. Read the product description carefully:

  • At the top of the product card there may be the words “cotton”, “natural”, and already under the line “Description” it is indicated “polycotton”, “cotton ...%, polyester ...%”.
  • At the top of the product card there may be the words “set”, “bedding”, the photographs correspond to them, but the description clarifies that this is only one sheet.

Euro-maxi – King size

The largest types of bed linen, the dimensions of which are suitable for beds from 180 cm wide. The dimensions of the duvet cover are standard for all countries (220x240), but the sheets may vary. The widest and longest are in Turkish sets: 270x310, 290x310, Russian ones, on the contrary, are most often 220x240.

This means:

  • 80x220 is the size of the sheet according to the sleeping area, and 30 is the height of the sides that hug the sides of the mattress.
  • 50x70 are the dimensions of the pillowcases, and 5 is the width of the decorative edging on them.
