There is no more popular clothing in the world than jeans, and no more versatile than black jeans. This is a basic wardrobe item that is appropriate to wear in any situation.

Over time, gray abrasions appear on the knees and folds. They spoil the appearance of the thing.

You can dye your jeans black using inexpensive simple dyes. They do this at home, and no special skills or equipment are needed.

Preparing things for update

It is not possible to refresh the color of your favorite jeans immediately after wearing them: the paint will lie unevenly and will not adhere well.

Sequence of actions before staining:

  1. All foreign objects are removed from pockets.
  2. The trouser legs are turned right side out.
  3. Wash jeans with powder at + 40 ᵒC, choosing a gentle cycle.
  4. The fabric is bleached by boiling it for half an hour in a solution of “Whiteness” with water (1:10). This allows the new paint to lay flat.
  5. After bleaching, the jeans are rinsed in running water several times.
  6. Then wash again in a machine without powder at +40 ᵒC.

Paint is applied only to damp, wrung out fabric.

Whitening

How to dye jeans black if we are dealing with red, green or orange shades? This is a very common question. So, we have already mentioned that it is better to pre-bleach the product. To do this, you need to dissolve the selected bleach in water in a 1:1 ratio. For these purposes, it is better to arm yourself with a deep container: a bucket, a basin. You should not use a bathtub container, as bleach may not have the best effect on the surface.

Then we place the product in the prepared solution (if you use white jeans as a base, the concentration of the solution can be reduced). The whitening procedure lasts 1.5-2 hours, and every 20 minutes it is necessary to change the position of the product for uniform processing. After bleaching, rinse your jeans several times: don’t worry if they turn yellowish rather than snow-white, the dye will color it all out.

Staining methods

You can dye jeans manually by boiling them in a deep container with dye dissolved in it. The second method is washing with dye in an automatic machine.

Everyone decides for themselves which method to use . These methods have their advantages and disadvantages.

Dyeing in the washing machine

This method is less labor intensive.
The paint is poured into the drum of the machine or into a container for washing powder. The item is colored during the washing process, but in this case it is quite difficult to control the result.

Hand dyeing

Faded jeans are boiled in water with dye diluted in it. They do it manually. The process is easy to control, but the work is quite labor-intensive.

Homemade coloring remedies

In addition to professional purchased fabric dyes, improvised dyes are used. You can find them in every home or purchase them at the nearest supermarket.

Hair dye

You can quickly and easily dye gray jeans with black hair dye. They use inexpensive brands (1-2 packs), this does not affect the quality of coloring.

Painting process:

  1. Prepare the trousers.
  2. Dilute the paint according to the instructions and dilute with water. There should be just enough dye to soak your jeans in it.
  3. Wet trousers are immersed in a black solution for 1-2 hours.
  4. The item is turned over every 20 minutes.
  5. All actions are carried out wearing protective rubber gloves.
  6. After the specified time, clean water is taken into the basin and 3 tbsp is dissolved in it. l. salt, immerse dyed jeans in the solution and rinse.

After dyeing and immersing in salt water, the trousers are rinsed under running water until clean water begins to drain from the item.

Felt pen

Writing utensils can also help restore faded trousers to their raven color. You can color it with ink from a black felt-tip pen.

Dyeing process:

  1. Remove 2 or 3 rods from the black markers.
  2. Dip them in water for dyeing, rinse each one well so that the dye comes out as much as possible.
  3. Immerse the trousers in the resulting solution for 1 hour.
  4. Periodically turn the jeans over and crumple them so that the dye saturates the fabric well.

After an hour, the trousers are removed from the solution, rinsed in running water, and dried.

Tea, coffee, tobacco

Vegetable dyes will help to update the color, but not radically change it. They mask faded areas, but not for long - after 2-3 washes the shade fades.

Painting process:

  1. Brew very strong coffee in plenty of water. You can use black tea or tobacco.
  2. The container in which the coloring will take place is filled ⅓ full with clean water and placed on the stove.
  3. As soon as the liquid boils, another third of the volume is filled with brewed strong coffee, tea, and tobacco. The brew should be thick and inky black. It must be strained before use.
  4. The solution is brought to a boil and removed from the heat.
  5. The jeans are completely immersed in a black solution. This can be done using a long spoon or boiling tongs.
  6. The fabric should be completely saturated with dye.
  7. The trousers are left in the liquid for a long time (2-3 hours), or overnight.

In the morning, rinse the jeans thoroughly in running water.

What you need to know

Every modern housewife can dye jeans black at home; this does not require any special skills. But before you start work, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory measures:

  • Analysis - the decision to dye denim should be balanced: analyze all the pros and cons of the procedure, prepare for a negative outcome. It should be understood that coloring at home is a risk, a roulette, the result can be both positive and negative.
  • Fabric composition - natural fabrics, such as cotton, are the most susceptible to dyeing. If your jeans are made primarily of synthetic fabrics, the dyeing result may not meet your expectations; you will have to repeat the procedure many times to obtain a rich, bright shade.

  • The original color is something that should definitely be taken into account. If you decide to dye your white jeans black, you will end up with jeans with a grayish tint. That is why, to obtain an expressive color, it is better to choose tones that are close in combination.
  • Protective equipment - when working with dyes, arm yourself with rubber gloves, which can be purchased at any hardware store.
  • Compliance with recommendations - the manufacturer leaves recommendations and useful tips on the packaging with the dye, so to get maximum results you should follow them unquestioningly.

Professional dyes

For faded black clothes, use a special fabric dye. Household chemical stores offer various brands of coloring products. They are usually available in the form of powders or gels.

Textile dye

Jeans are prepared for dyeing. Then ammonia (50 ml) is diluted in cold water (10 l). Jeans are soaked in this solution for half an hour.

Dyeing method:

  1. The paint is diluted in water (the proportions are indicated on the package).
  2. Pants are immersed in a container with a dye solution, and the pan is placed on the stove.
  3. Bring the liquid to a boil over low heat.
  4. Boil the jeans for 1 hour, stirring so that the dye is evenly distributed.

After the procedure, the trousers are rinsed in warm water and dried. Bright color returns, the thing is updated.

The best black fabric dyes:

  • Javana Black;
  • Atey;
  • Coloreria Italiana.

All pigmented products are available in powder form and are suitable for dyeing black items in the washing machine and by hand.

Acrylic paints

Acrylic-based fabric dyes will help you achieve uniform coloring. This acrylic paint penetrates deep into the structure of the fabric and is firmly fixed in it.

The dye allows you to dye jeans not only in one color, but also to create a pattern on the canvas.

Acrylic dyes for fabrics:

  • Tair;
  • Decola;
  • Rosa Start
  • Marabu.

All dyes are sold in the form of a gel or a thick coloring mass, which is bottled into glass containers with a volume of no more than 50 ml.

General recommendations

Dyeing things is not an easy procedure that requires accuracy and skill. And given that dyes and solutions can be dangerous for both fabric and skin, compliance with safety rules is simply necessary:

  1. Work with paint only with thick rubber gloves. They reliably protect the skin of your hands.
  2. Carefully study the composition of the dye and the instructions for its use.
  3. Find the label on the product and see what icons and legends are shown on it. This will make it easier for you to navigate acceptable and undesirable actions in relation to fabric.
  4. Determine what material you are dealing with. This will allow you to independently adjust the amount of dye. Natural fabrics can be dyed faster and with better quality than fabrics mixed with synthetic threads.
  5. When diluting the solution, consider the original color of the clothing. If the pants are white or beige, then as a result of the procedure they will not turn black. You can only count on a dark gray shade. But if the trousers or jeans are initially gray or brown, then in this case the chances of getting a rich black color are much greater.

Dyeing to create effects on fabric

In addition to plain coloring on the canvas, you can create the effect of boiled, worn, stained jeans.

Light-wash jeans

Soda will help to lighten the denim completely or certain areas: rub the powder on the area that needs to be lightened, then wash the trousers with the addition of the same product in the washing machine.

To lighten the fabric by 1 tone, jeans are washed by hand with 50 g of soda added to water. To obtain a lasting result, the procedure is repeated 2-3 times .

Varenki

To get the boiled effect, jeans are soaked in water and folded as if wrung out after washing. The trousers are secured with elastic bands at the waist and at the bottom of the legs to prevent the fabric from falling apart.

Then prepare a bleaching solution: take White or any other disinfectant with chlorine (250 ml), dilute it in 10 liters of water, bring to a boil.

The jeans are boiled in this solution for half an hour. Then the item is rinsed and dried as usual.

Divorce effect

To obtain a beautiful color transition on fabric, aniline dye is used. Choose 2 or 3 colors, in the same color scheme.

For example, blue and blue or lilac or purple.
Using a sponge, apply the dyes one after another in stripes and shade. There should be no sharp stripes or transitions .
The trousers are then hung vertically to allow the paint to run off a little. Such smudges will create the effect of streaks.

Plastisol paints

They are more often used in screen printing, but for manual work there is a fluorescent dye based on a phosphor.

  • Jeans are cleaned of dirt and washed.
  • The first layer of the image is applied with a synthetic brush.
  • After the first layer has completely dried, the second and subsequent layers are applied.
  • After applying the last layer, the jeans dry for 2-3 hours.

To make the drawing look more impressive, light colors are used as a basis. The glow dye is charged from sunlight, which accumulates in 20-30 minutes.

Caring for the item after dyeing

Painted items do not require special care. It is important to follow a number of simple rules to maintain color.

Care instructions:

  1. Only use powder for dyed or black items.
  2. During the washing process, do not use bleaches or products containing chlorine.
  3. Wash jeans turning them inside out.
  4. Do not dry the item in the sun.
  5. During the washing process, maintain a temperature regime of up to +40 ᵒС.

Creative Denim Processing Options

If you want to create original jeans, you need to dye them differently. There are several types of creative processing of products:

Uneven coloring

In order for original stripes of various types to appear on jeans, they can be processed in two ways:

  1. Wet it, twist it into a tourniquet and tie it in different places with rubber bands. In this form, immerse in a basin and paint using a cold or hot method.
  2. Remove all metal accessories from your pants, including the zipper. Then tie the legs in knots several times or crease along the entire length. Dissolve the paint in a fireproof glass container and place the trousers in it. Wrap the container on all sides with cellophane and place in the microwave for 4 minutes. Then the item of clothing is washed and rinsed without untying. Straighten the product only during drying.

How not to spoil something

When dyeing at home, it is important not to spoil your favorite item. You need to do everything possible to make it look like new.

To maintain the appearance of your trousers, you need to:

  • follow the instructions indicated on the dye packaging;
  • do not add large amounts of chlorine for bleaching: it can damage the fabric structure;
  • properly prepare the canvas for painting so that the pigment lies evenly;
  • after dyeing, the jeans are rinsed in water with the addition of 1-2 tbsp. l. vinegar (acid helps fix the dye to the fabric);
  • For the procedure, it is best to use purchased professional dyes rather than improvised means - this way the effect will be more predictable;
  • If you have an old thing that you don’t wear when going out, you can practice on it.

When jeans are dyed with herbal substances or improvised means, it is important to carefully follow all recommendations.
