Making patterns and sewing ball gowns with your own hands

Any little girl loves to feel like a princess. Clothes such as a fluffy ball gown with a photon skirt will help you create this look. Making a childhood dream come true is not so difficult. For holidays such as New Year or Birthday, or at a demonstration performance in a dance club, you can create a model of a fluffy dress for your girl. But you don't have to be a child to wear a dress like this.

Many girls also really love ball gowns, which they wear to prom or other special events. The question arises: “How to sew a ballgown with your own hands?” The answer to this question can be found below.

What does a ball gown look like?

Fabrics needed for sewing ball gowns

One of the most durable fabrics is supplex. Clothes made from this material are quite elastic and flexible, and are also practical. Guipure is also popular. Sewing elements from this material looks expensive due to the protruding lace. This is a stiffer fabric compared to lace. Material such as butter is natural knitwear. Ideal for tight dresses. Meryl is also a kind of knitwear, only stronger and with greater wear resistance. You can also sew a dress from silk. But such a suit will require special care. Sewing from pearl chiffon will have a special shine. In general, you can sew using different materials, but the best ones are those listed above.

Learning to sew in a subway car - quick sources of knowledge

Thematic sites and YouTube channels are a very cool thing, but they require thoughtful study, for which you don’t always have the time and energy. Channels on Telegram and pages on Instagram - training that can be completed even in the subway.

14 and 15. Telegram channels “Sewing Portal” and “Sewing tips from Thimble”

Their authors share product patterns, links to video tutorials, and help to understand delicate professional issues. Both channels regularly publish posts with life hacks, typical mistakes of beginners, and misconceptions about needlework.

16 and 17. Channels for seamstresses on Instagram

If you want to receive not only life hacks, but also aesthetic pleasure from studying, go to Instagram.

For example, folk motifs are present in the @foxsews profile. Its owner, by the way, uses eco-friendly fabrics for her clothes, for example, linen, and combines all this with our usual skirts, jeans, etc. We promise that you will get a lot of pleasure from her cozy photographs and colorful products.

Well, for those who are interested in watching the development and work of others, we recommend checking out @olga_sews. This is a kind of collection of notes from a beginner who gradually becomes an increasingly experienced seamstress, sharing life hacks with you, helping you avoid mistakes, and recommending useful books. And you, reading this profile, are also gradually moving towards the heights of sewing art.

Ball gown models

Many girls dream of ball gowns, starting from childhood. You want to wear an outfit where the size of the skirt is amazing and mesmerizing from the first time you watch a Disney fairy tale.

The most common and advantageous are pastel colors and various shades of white. These colors are associated with innocence and tenderness, so they will look perfect on a young lady.

Ball gown model

For a noble and majestic outfit, rich shades are suitable:

  • burgundy,
  • blue,
  • emerald,
  • purple.

Attention! It will help to visually elongate and slim black. It turns out to be a rather strict image.

For a bright and catchy look, typical of girls who are used to being the center of attention, fuchsia or bright pink color is suitable.

Shades of noble wine colors, deep blue, and emerald look very chic and seductive.

For those with fair skin, warm colors are suitable: orange or yellow, but not bright. Fashionable purple suits dark ladies.

There are an incredible number of ball gown models: a universal option: three-quarter sleeves, a full skirt and a cutout at the back. Also an interesting option: a voluminous skirt combined with a lace bodice. For those with a slender figure, models with a tight silhouette or a voluminous skirt with a low waist are suitable. The “fish” model is in great demand among slender girls.

Entrepreneurs' responses

1. Does it make sense to learn to sew yourself, or does it really take a long time?

We were thinking about some kind of express courses to have a general understanding of the process and to have the opportunity for independent creative experiments. We will come up with models ourselves, I would like to have the opportunity to try to sew them.

We sew ourselves, and it's hellish work. We have both been sewing for several years now, I have sewn to order (including wedding dresses) and it is still very difficult to sew and run a business. Since you don't sew, it might make sense for you to find someone who is good at sewing. Of course, it’s very convenient when you can sit down at the machine yourself and sew a sample, rather than trying to explain something to someone, but perhaps this is not the most important thing.

Who will make the patterns for your models? If you do not have experience in creating patterns, you will have to pay separately for patterns (unless, of course, you find a seamstress who can also create patterns). Only then will the seamstress cost more.

2. Please advise what criteria should we use to look for a seamstress/dressmaker who could implement and possibly develop our ideas?

The most important thing is that you can work with her, that you “get along in character,” and that you have the same understanding of “quality.” I’m tired of fighting over every crooked seam, every faux pas, so we sew ourselves. If you are planning knitwear, be sure to “try” a seamstress/dressmaker on knitwear too. Sewing knitwear is not the same as sewing cotton or even silk (personally, I had to learn more).

3. We want to buy a machine and an overlocker. Is it better to do it ourselves or rely on a seamstress to hire?

Find yourself a dressmaker, you will always have time to buy a machine. If you are looking for a seamstress at home, then she will have everything you need for sewing and your machine will be idle. Unfortunately, I can't help you with prices and rates.

“The only problem is the lack of funding, and we don’t want to get involved with investors.”

Girls, this is not a problem, this is a PROBLEM, and what a huge one. A lot of great ideas and businesses “didn’t come to fruition” due to lack of money. What are you going to do?

“The most important thing is that we have a brand concept and ideas.”

This is, of course, excellent. Ideas are always a good start. You have a plus - one of you is a marketer. We have to pay for marketing, and a lot (sometimes I think too much).

“Make money by selling piece goods online”

Make yourself a table of how much money you need to earn in order to start a company. Selling clothes online is very difficult (and we also learned this the hard way). When we were planning, we were going to sell only via the Internet, now we are starting to look at boutiques as a possible avenue for sales.

“Which no one does”

I’m afraid to upset you, there are almost no things left that “no one does.” There are things that are not profitable and there are things that are unnecessary, which is why no one makes them.

Carefully.

Is it best for her (the seamstress) to work at home or in the office?

Will you have an office? Do you need it (other than for a seamstress)? As far as I know, no one rents out offices for free. We work from home, it’s good that we live two houses away.

From my experience of starting companies: write yourself a business plan, draw up expense tables (and write everything honestly, as it is), then look at the size of the market, decide what you will produce, sign a partnership agreement, and then start looking for a dressmaker. Finding someone to work with is not the hardest thing. It is much more difficult to find a person and not be able to hire him. We planned for almost a year, and when we launched, a whole bunch of small (and nasty) problems emerged that no one wants to solve. But you still have to solve them. What else? On average, a fashion designer spends 5-10% of his time creating collections, the rest of the time is spent on business.

Ball gown pattern

Now we should move on to the main stage of work: a pattern for a ballroom dancing dress.

  • The length should correspond to the bodice pattern and the circumference of the skirt. The fastest way to take measurements: take any turtleneck and trace its outline. The fabric stretches and wraps around the silhouette. It is necessary to draw a half-sun of the desired length on stretch fabric. Repeat the same steps on the tulle material.

Pattern No. 1

  • To process tulle, you need to take a sewing machine and make a zigzag seam along the edge. The rest is processed with an overlocker due to its stretchy properties.
  • Now it’s time to sew the seams on the shoulders. Next step: sew in the sleeves and one seam on the side. Now sew in the hem of the skirt, creating folds. You need to immediately insert the tulle so that the edges are invisible.
  • Next, sew the sides and the seam on the skirt along one edge. All that remains is to turn out our suit. Here is a small master class on creating a ball gown. This is an easy option for the beginning seamstress.

Additional Information !
To create a narrow sleeve, I will open the armhole at the bottom and leave the sleeve at the bottom unstitched. It is better to insert a separate part that will cover the hole a few centimeters in a circle.

Spy on sewing masters

Pinterest

it's the perfect place to find inspiration and ideas. The master seamstress will be surprised to discover interesting combinations of fabrics, current styles and models of clothing.

Pinterest is not the best option for searching for patterns; it is better to use it as a huge source of original and creative ideas.

A convenient feature: here you can create so-called individual “boards” and save your favorite “pins” (i.e. pictures with ideas) on them so as not to lose anything.

Porrivan

A great resource for inexperienced seamstresses. What is a new seamstress looking for? Simple patterns with clear notes, detailed and step-by-step explanations, lessons without unfamiliar terms. Porrivan has it all, plus you can download materials for work for free. Bottom line: the perfect portal for a beginner.

Osinka.ru

Thirdly, here you can find a forum for every topic, where craftsmen and amateurs share their experiences and discuss their handmade problems. Overall, with the exception of the design and navigation, the site is really excellent.

Season.ru

We decided to leave this ideal site for dessert. It's really great in every way: there's plenty of educational information for beginners, a whole bunch of friendly seniors who will be happy to help you with advice, and a great interface.

Sewing tips

It is better to use a T-shirt for the bodice pattern. For the skirt, make a sun pattern. The petticoat should have large flounces.

  1. The straps should be sewn directly onto the elastic band.
  2. Next, sew to the bodice details.
  3. Sew one side of the bodice.
  4. Sew the skirt piece, trim the edges and sew along the sides.
  5. Now all that remains is to decorate the skirt with ruffles and lace at the waist.

Pattern No. 2

Darts

Calculation of darts = (segment T T3 – (St + Pt))/ 4.

I distribute the resulting difference between the back and front details in the waist and side darts.

The center of the waist dart on the back runs in the middle of the segment G G2, the descent from the chest line G G3 is 4 cm down, the descent from the waist line T T1 is 10 cm down

The center of the dart along the front runs along the center of the chest G6 T6, the descent from the chest line G G3 is 4 cm down, the descent from the waist line T T1 is 12 cm down.

In order to construct side darts along the hip line, you need to calculate the difference using the formula: segment BB3 - (Sb + Pb). We divide the resulting value (it can be either positive or negative, it depends on the type of figure) in half.

And with a positive value we retreat along the line of the hips of the back to the right, and along the shelf to the left. For a negative value it's the opposite. In the figure below, the side slices intersect, which means I got a positive difference.

If the value is zero, the side darts meet at one point.

With a negative value, the side darts are located further away from each other.

Care Tips

Popular recommendations:

  • An awl and thread are an assistant for creating a costume, but they will not help in caring for it.
  • Wash ball gowns separately from other items because they may stain. It is better to use the delicate wash mode for this.
  • For an outfit with some jewelry, it’s not worth the risk and it’s better to wash it by hand.
  • It is necessary to dry either on a hanger or in a completely straightened state, horizontally.
  • You can iron dresses, but on a low setting. It’s better to use a steamer, especially for full skirts.
  • It is better to transport and store in a special case. But after wearing, the cover does not need to be tightly closed so that the fabric can breathe.
  • By following these care tips, you can keep your dress looking its best for longer.

Tulle ball gown

Advice from entrepreneurs on what preparation should include

  • Business plan;
  • Partnership agreement (this is all good now and you simply adore your partner, after some time you may not want to see her, and not just work with her every day). A clear distinction between “rights and responsibilities” is needed. You both need to understand WHY you need this.
  • Table of expenses and income (without embellishments);
  • Understanding WHAT and WHERE to sell;
  • Understanding WHO you will sell it all to;
  • Understanding WHERE you will advertise your product, prices and conditions;
  • A clear idea of the prices of your goods;
  • A clear idea of prices for “raw” goods (material, buttons, locks, etc.);
  • At least a few small conversations with suppliers (material, etc.);
  • A clear idea of WHAT you can buy (you can draw everything, then try to find the material).

Finally, let me ask a few counter questions.

  • Do you have an accountant? Have you already shown him your business plan? What did he say?
  • If you're not a marketer yourself, have you hired a marketer yet? What did he tell you?
  • Do you already know what conditions children's clothing must fulfill (by law)? How are you going to follow these laws?
  • Have you found insurance yet? Have you already received prices for insurance for your business?
  • What brand are you going to sell under?
  • Are your name, tag, and business cards ready?
  • Is your page design ready? Have you hired an artist yet?
  • Did you find any models? Have you agreed on payment?
  • Have you found a photographer (don’t tell me that you take good photographs, or that you have some relative who does this)?
  • Have you already ordered instructions for caring for your items?
  • Have you developed your first collection? How many samples have you sewn so far?
  • Who will do the cutting? And where?
  • Who will do the “final” (finishing) work?
  • How will you deliver clothes after you have ordered them online?
  • What time do you plan for delivery? How will you achieve this?
  • Who pays for shipping: you or the client?
  • How will you charge money for things ordered online?

And most importantly: WHERE WILL YOU GET THE MONEY FROM?

Eh, you should both work in a garment factory and gain experience. Not even from the point of view of tailoring, but of all the chaos that is called “fashion business”. You should at least read about the business you are starting to work in. There are plenty of books that can give you an idea of what it will all look like.

Ball Gown Jewelry

A lot of different elements have been invented to decorate a ball gown. These can be incredibly beautiful shiny rhinestones; flowers made from silk or some kind of applique are often used. Unusual straps look good, for example with frills or lace. Interesting embroidery is also popular, making the dress unique. You can also create some kind of print that will reflect the inner world of the baby. This could be his favorite character or an interesting inscription. And the variety in the choice of sequins, beads, beads and other things will not leave anyone indifferent. Decorations such as frills and ruffles also look very elegant and gentle. Everything depends only on the imagination of the needlewoman.

Embroidery on the outfit

As a rule, evening dresses are created with the help of flowers. This brings luxury to the look. Embroidery is in trend now. It could be a certain style or color, or maybe a cross pattern. A lace collar will transform any casual outfit into a festive costume. You can also complement the look with any collar as a decoration. Now there are many different ready-made collar options.

Requirements for competition costumes

In the dance field, there are a number of restrictions and requirements for certain types of costumes. How to sew on a machine correctly

Error 7

Failure to read the instructions for using the sewing machine. Before you start sewing, you need to set up your sewing equipment. To ensure straight stitches, you need to regularly lubricate the necessary parts and clean the inside of the machine with a special brush.

Advice from an expert on where to lubricate a sewing machine and how to do it here >>>

Error 8

Do not change needles. Often, a beginning seamstress is faced with the fact that the machine makes poor-quality stitches, loops or skips. It must be borne in mind that for each type of fabric there are certain sizes of sewing needles. They are divided by numbers: 70, 80...110. There are also special needles for stretch fabrics. If you don’t know how to sew knitwear correctly, then the main thing here is to use the right needles. In addition, keep in mind that over time the needles will have to be changed, they may become dull or scratches may form on them - such needles leave snags on the fabric.

Error 9. Time

Sew quickly. When a novice seamstress starts sewing, due to lack of experience and patience, she wants to sew the item quickly, so she skips such important stages in the work as basting. Or leaves uneven lines. You need to not be lazy to use a seam ripper and learn to sew efficiently. There is a misconception - that if a thing is sewn for oneself, then only I can see the wrong side and crooked stitches, so it will do just fine. Train yourself to sew a “beautiful inside out.”

Mistake 10. Trying on

Sew without trying on. In the process of sewing a product, you must definitely try it on; you can skip this step only if the pattern is tailored to your figure and you have already sewn according to these patterns.

Mistake 11. Desire

Leaving an item unfinished. It often happens that a seamstress begins to sew, but then the desire disappears, and the item remains unfinished. Be patient - if something doesn’t work out, try to find your mistakes and correct them. Don't start sewing a new item until you finish the previous one.

Error 12: Tools

Not having the necessary sewing tools on hand >>> Before you start sewing, take the trouble to acquire the most essential sewing tools: tailor's chalk, pins, measuring tape, good fabric scissors, an iron with a steam function. They will make your work easier and save time, and the result will be much better.

Error 13. Ironing

Sew raw fabrics. Ironing or decatching (wet heat treatment) of fabric is a mandatory process before sewing. If you skip this step, then all your efforts may be lost after the first wash of the item. The fabric may shrink and the item will decrease in size.

I hope after reading these mistakes of a novice seamstress, proven from your own experience, you will think about how to sew correctly. And as always, I wish you success in all your creative endeavors and see you again on my blog.
