How to determine the weight of dry bed linen for washing

Household appliances / Washing machines / How to wash

Clean bedding can be considered the main condition for healthy sleep. Even if all family members wash thoroughly every day before going to bed, traces of sweat and small particles of skin remain on it, and this is the main food for bed mites. By properly washing your clothes, you can increase their wear life and also ensure hygiene.

Dependence of weight on the type of things and fabric

Dry bedding with a total weight of up to 3 kg and a wool blanket with the same weight when wet will weigh differently. How to determine the correct load for the machine? The tips are equally useful for both top-loading and front-loading machines.

General recommendations

  • The cotton fabric serves as a guide and sample. With a maximum load of 6 kg, the machine can easily fit 6 kg of dry cotton items.
  • It is better to load synthetic fabrics 2 times less than the permitted volume.
  • Wool products are placed at the rate of 25-35% of the declared volume.
  • When working in the “Delicate Wash” mode, the weight of the laundry is up to half the recommended load, and sometimes even 1/3 of the specified parameters.
  • The “Quick Wash” mode will produce high-quality results when loading 1/3 of dry laundry.

If the machine is overloaded, problems cannot be avoided. It will begin to exhibit glitches and errors, and may even fail completely.

Possible consequences if overloaded:

  • clothes are not washed enough;
  • things are rinsed completely, stains from the detergent remain on dark-colored items;
  • Washing machine mechanisms wear out quickly.

Washing in a half-empty drum can also cause damage. The machine load should not be less than 1/3 of the nominal value.

When washing silk and wool, it is preferable to choose a mode without intensive spinning, in warm water. Silk does not like being next to other types of fabrics. You can put 1/3 of the maximum weight allowed in the drum. When washing wool, it makes sense to limit yourself to 1/4 of the nominal load weight.

For synthetic fabrics, the loading weight can be calculated based on the formula x/1.5. That is, for washing in a machine with a maximum load of 6 kg, you can load 4 kg of synthetic laundry.

Cotton fabrics are loaded according to the instructions, but there are some nuances. For example, linen made from calico will weigh more than linen made from satin.

The latest automatic machines are equipped with functions for weighing dry laundry and analyzing the percentage of drum fullness. If you have the opportunity to purchase such a car, then it is better to choose this option. In this case, she herself will tell you when enough is loaded.

Wet weight

When washing in the “automatic” mode, you need to take into account the approximate weight of wet bed linen in order to correctly calculate the load of the washing machine. Bedding manufacturers almost never indicate such data. The labels only contain information about the dry weight of the pillowcase, sheet and duvet cover. As a result, each owner of a washing machine has to independently calculate the weight of wet bedding sets.

This mathematical process is carried out quite simply by multiplying the dry weight of the laundry by three. Thus, we obtain the following values for products in a wet state:

  • single - 4.2 kg.
  • one-and-a-half-sleeping - from 4.5 to 4.74 kg.
  • double - from 4.2 to 6.3 kg.
  • euro set - from 6 to 7.5 kg.
  • children's - 3.6 kg.

Individually, each wet accessory will weigh:

  • duvet cover - approximately 2.4 kg.
  • sheet - from 1.5 to 1.8 kg.
  • pillowcase - 0.6 kg.

There is another equally easy way of counting, when the owners of washing machines simply load the drum of the device by one third, which in total gives the same result. The final weight of wet items may also depend on the material from which they are made. For example, a set of wool bedding when wet will weigh significantly more than cotton and silk sleep products. As a rule, the weight of products in such situations is determined approximately, and the extra or, on the contrary, missing 100-200 grams will not have much significance during washing.

Compliance with the norms regarding the weight of laundry allows owners of washing machines not only to wash their clothes correctly and quickly, but also to protect the equipment from possible overloads. Following simple recommendations also significantly improves the quality of the wash itself, helping to remove stubborn dirt without any problems. Of course, it is inconvenient to weigh things every time, and therefore the best option in such a situation would be to stick a note on the washing machine, indicating the weight values of various bedding sets.

How to determine load volume without weighing

You can prepare an approximate chart of the weight of dry laundry and hang it in a visible place.

How to understand that there are more things than the recommended norm, or, conversely, not enough? When overloaded, abundant foam formation is observed, and at the end of the wash, traces of soap solution are visible on the fabric, not rinsed with water.

Strong rumble and high vibration will indicate insufficient loading of things.

These observations will help to more accurately determine the amount of laundry to be loaded during subsequent washes.

How much is 4 kg of laundry?

Let's try to roughly calculate the volume of loaded clothes for a machine with a maximum load of up to 4 kg.

  • 2-3 sets of bed linen;
  • 3-5 jackets, depending on the volume and type of fabric;
  • 15-20 T-shirts, shirts;
  • 2 trouser suits;
  • 1-2 outer coats or jackets;
  • 6-8 bath towels.

5 kg of laundry - how much?

  • 3 sets of bed linen;
  • 4-6 jackets;
  • up to 25 T-shirts;
  • 2 jackets;
  • 8-10 bath towels.

How much is 6 kg of laundry?

  • 3-4 sets of bed linen;
  • 5-7 jackets;
  • 25-27 T-shirts;
  • 2-3 jackets;
  • 10-12 bath towels.

The given values are conditional, because an important parameter is not only the maximum load of the machine, but also the volume of laundry to be loaded. Do not forget that 100% loading of the machine is prohibited in order to avoid breakdown.

The optimal machine load is 2/3 of the drum volume.

Product Features

The fur of some animals can provide healing warmth. In addition, the special properties of wool fibers are used for various purposes.

Depending on the raw material, blankets are made from camel, goat and sheep wool.

  • camel has a small weight with a large volume;
  • goat (cashmere) suitable for people suffering from allergies;
  • sheep (merino) - the softest with medicinal properties.

Sheepskin blanket
Based on fillings, products are classified into the following categories:

  • downy: duck, goose and loon down;
  • wool: cashmere, merino and camel;
  • cotton: natural cotton;
  • silk: silkworm threads;
  • bamboo: bamboo fabric;
  • synthetic: padding polyester, holofiber, down substitute;
  • exotic: fibers of seaweed, eucalyptus and other plants.

Woolen blankets are also divided according to the sewing method into cassette, quilted and karostep. From woven blankets that have one or two sides with open wool, a softer texture is chosen for use as a blanket or for therapeutic purposes.

Automatic weighing of laundry by washing machine

The washing machine can be equipped with a smart automatic weighing function. In this case, you will not have to calculate the weight of dirty laundry when loading, since the machine itself will receive important information.

Plus function: having determined the weight of the items, the machine itself will calculate the amount of water needed and set the optimal washing mode. This function is also good because it guarantees reliable protection against breakdowns, as it will prevent the drum from being overloaded.

How to properly load a washing machine drum

When loading the drum into the machine, consider the following points:

  1. Mandatory sorting by color, material and degree of contamination.
  2. Check all pockets for forgotten items.
  3. Knitwear and terry cloth should be turned inside out.
  4. Calculation of the optimal weight for washing.
  5. Selecting the recommended washing mode based on the type of fabric.
  6. If there is an excess of washing powder or gel, things will not be washed well, and the machine itself may break.
  7. When choosing a temperature mode, you should not set the maximum value. Heating water consumes a large amount of electricity.

Proper washing of clothes

Of course, the weight of the bed linen is very important, but washing rules are also of great importance. Here are some of them:

  • Before putting your items in the wash, sort them by fabric type and color. Pay attention to the symbols on the product label, which indicate at what temperature and in what mode a particular item should be washed.

Important! We invite you to bookmark our separate article, which contains a detailed explanation of all the icons on clothing.

  • Do not wash calico and silk, synthetics and wool together.
  • Do not load colored and white items at the same time.
  • Load different sizes of items into the machine to improve washing efficiency.
  • Before loading, be sure to check your clothing pockets and fasten all zippers, clasps, and buttons.
  • Do not exceed loading limits. Remember that washing machine weights are for dry fabrics, not wet ones.
  • Set the correct wash cycle for each material. It is also necessary to set the correct temperature. For cotton and linen items, set the temperature to 60 degrees; wash colored and synthetic items at 30-50 degrees.
  • Wash children's sheets and duvet covers (especially for newborns) at high temperatures. If the fabric is natural, it will withstand 90 degrees.
  • To wash children's clothes, use special children's laundry detergents.
  • Do not machine anything that is old, fragile or very small. If you need to wash such products, place them in special bags.
  • Underwear with metal fittings (bras with wires) should not be machine washed.
  • Do not wash clothes soiled with products containing gasoline or other solvents.
  • Wash heavy items without the “Spin” function.
  • The minimum loading weight should not be less than 1 kg.

Maximum and minimum load parameters

Not all instructions contain this information, especially about the minimum load. For any type of automatic washing machine, there is a minimum load of laundry equal to 1 kg.

If the value is lower, the laundry will not be evenly distributed throughout the drum during the spin cycle, which will harm balance and alignment. The result is distortion and increased vibration of the drum.

The maximum weight of dry laundry can range from 3 kg (for a small model) to 12 kg (for large models). In fact, this is a very large amount of clothing, which is not entirely justified. The average set of bed linen weighs about 1.5 kg. Arithmetic suggests that a drum with a load of up to 12 kg can accommodate up to 8 such sets. Do you have that much dirty laundry?

One more thing. Washed laundry has a larger volume than dry and folded laundry. For example, a thick, dry blanket can easily fit in a basin, but washing it by hand in a basin is almost impossible. It is better to do this in the bathroom, which has a much larger volume.

Therefore, in order for things to be washed well, it is better to put down jackets, jackets, blankets in machines with a higher maximum load.

Maximum load of laundry depending on the washing program:

The least amount of wool products is put into the drum; it absorbs more moisture.

The recommended filling, regardless of weight, is equal to 2/3 of the drum volume. This amount will allow you to maintain balance during rotation and wring out the washed items well.

Weight of each bedding set individually

In addition to the weight values specific to the double and euro sets, it is also important to know the approximate dry weight of all other bedding sets. Their average weight characteristics in kilograms are as follows:

  • for a single set - 1.4;
  • for a 1.5-bedroom - 1.58;
  • for children - 1.2.

The standard weight of each accessory separately, in turn, has the following approximate values (table):

European standard double bed linen

In most countries, it plays the same role as in our country - an ordinary double, differs only in parameters. By the way, they are the same almost everywhere, sometimes with a difference of 5-10 cm in a larger direction. You no longer need to rack your brains about what size double bed linen is suitable for a 160x200 bed; the best option is Euro standard. And among the Italian sets you can find ones that will be just right for a mattress 2 meters wide.

Compound:

  • 1 duvet cover.
  • 1 sheet.
  • Pillowcases – 2 pcs. 70x70 cm and 2 pcs. 50x70 cm.

This double set of pillowcases comes in almost all sets of double bed linen, marked as Euro-standard. Therefore, here you will either have to buy additional rectangular pillows, or figure out how to use the “extra” elements.
