Simple technique of raglan sleeve pattern construction in 5 minutes

In today's lesson, we will figure out together how to model the basic patterns of a dress and a one-seam sleeve, so that the end result is a product with a raglan sleeve.

In essence, a raglan sleeve is a method of cutting a sleeve in which this part is cut together with the shoulder part of the front and back parts. A striking feature of a product with such a sleeve is the armhole, which originates from the neckline. At the same time, if we compare the raglan armhole and the set-in sleeve armhole, the first of them will be deeper than the second. The shoulder part of the shelf and back parts is filled with a sleeve, and in the place where the shoulder seam was, there is a connecting seam of the sleeve part.

Stay with us, and our detailed instructions and videos will tell you how to sew a raglan sleeve, the pattern of which will be created by you personally;)

How to create a raglan sleeve pattern yourself: modeling the basic dress pattern

Products with raglan sleeves are in considerable demand. In particular, this is how tracksuits, jumpers, sweaters, dresses, and sweaters are sewn. They can be either long or short sleeved. This type of sleeve is easy to cut, making it suitable for beginner craftswomen.

Depending on the appearance of the armhole, the following variations of raglan sleeves are distinguished:

  • classic sleeve;
  • zero sleeve;
  • semi-raglan sleeve;
  • raglan shoulder strap;
  • one-piece cut with raglan yoke.

In the picture below we tried to illustrate what each type of raglan sleeve looks like:

The raglan sleeve pattern is constructed in two ways:

  • creating a pattern from scratch;
  • constructive modeling of a finished individual pattern - the basis of a shoulder product and a single-seam sleeve.

In our opinion, the second method (as in the photo) is the most suitable for beginning craftswomen, so in today’s master class we will talk about it;)

To work, prepare several sheets of A4 paper, stapled together, or tracing paper/whatman paper. In addition, we will need a basic pattern for the dress and one-seam sleeve, built according to your measurements. We have already described how to build such patterns in previous articles on our website.
