How to make an A-line skirt pattern

The A-line silhouette has a trapezoidal shape - a flared model.

Measurements:

  • OT - waist circumference.
  • HB - hip height.
  • OB - hip circumference.
  • DI is the length of the product.

An example of a homemade skirt.
Technique for creating a pattern:

  • Place a vertical section downwards on the paper, VB-1 cm long.
  • From the point at the top, a downward segment equal to CI is laid off.
  • Select the 3 resulting points.
  • From the points, draw horizontal segments to the right - the line of the waist, hips, bottom.
  • Upper point - the size of the segment is OT/4+2, i.e. T.
  • Midpoint - length OB/4+2, t.B.
  • From point B, lay down the perpendicular at the bottom.
  • From point B to the right a line equal to OB/4+1, mark point B1.
  • Through B1, draw a perpendicular to the bottom and waist, i.e. T1, D1.
  • Connect t. T with B1 using a smooth line, place t. D1.
  • Determine the center of the dart.
  • Cut out the pattern.

How to create an A-line skirt pattern based on a straight skirt

From the base for a straight skirt, you can make an A-line product.

School skirt pattern:

  • From the lowest point of the dart, a perpendicular line is drawn down to the bottom.
  • Cut halves of the products along this line.
  • Cut out the darts.
  • Divide each half into 2 parts - strips.
  • Combine the strips of the halves along the dart line.
  • Hiding the dart creates a flare.

Note! The back and front parts have different types of darts. The back area is not closed completely, but to the width of the front part - this will help eliminate the appearance of “seam runaway”.

Fluffy skirt with frills

I sewed this skirt from kulirka (thin knitwear, but it is better to sew such a model from fabric that does not wrinkle, for example, viscose), it consists of 3 tiers.

Baby clothes. Lush skirt from a kulirka

The pattern is suitable for a height of 110-116 cm, if the tiers are made a couple of cm wider, then the skirt will suit a height of 116-122 cm.

So, we cut out strips from the fabric: 1) 2 rectangles measuring 31x12 cm (here there will be a hem and then insert an elastic band), 2) a strip of 20x100 cm (top tier), 3) a strip of 22x130 cm (middle tier), 4) a strip of 22x170 cm ( bottom tier) - in the photo the stripes are folded in half in width and length, and you will also need thin strips for the bottom layer of the skirt, see the photos below.

Pattern of a children's fluffy skirt

We sew strip 1 on the sides (where the elastic will be), sew the remaining strips for the tiers separately into circles, bend them in half and sew the edges, making gatherings (if you have a gathering foot, this will make the work easier). Then we sew the strip for the upper tier to the belt (where the elastic will be) and cut a thin strip 7-7.5 cm wide and sew it on the side (see photo).

Again, cut a thin strip 8-8.5 cm wide, but a little longer and repeat the steps indicated above.

Now we bend the belt depending on the width of the elastic, stitch it, leaving a couple of cm unstitched and insert the elastic. I got this fluffy knitted skirt for my eldest daughter.

PS: I bought 1 m of cooler and I still have fabric left, enough for a 2-tier skirt for my youngest daughter.

Master class on how to sew an American skirt. Fabric calculation, pattern, sewing!

American skirts have become popular lately. We advise mothers of girls who dream of such a skirt to be patient. A beautiful DIY American skirt will cost you much less and can be sewn to suit your needs.

It is not difficult to sew, it consists of tiers and ruffles. Typically tulle (soft knitted mesh) and satin are used.

American skirt pattern

Cutting and calculation for a little girl

To make calculations easier, let’s take a skirt for a baby, 30 cm long and a waist volume of 60 cm. All calculations will be made in proportion to this length and volume.

This is a yoke made of satin fabric, 2 OT long. It is more rectangular or square - depends on the measurements.

This is a 1 tier 9 OT long chiffon skirt.

This is a 2 tier skirt, 12 OT long, made of chiffon.

In fact, an American skirt does not need a pattern. It is sewn from three rectangles.

Height of 1 rectangle (yoke) = 20 cm, length at least 2 x waist size, we have 60*2=120.

The height of 2 rectangles (1 tier) is 11 cm, length 9 OT. 60*9= 540 cm.

The height of 3 rectangles (2nd tier) is 11 cm, length 12 OT. 60*12=720 cm.

Ruffles are cut with ribbons, 7 cm wide, made of mesh (tulle). Choose not very stiff tulle or nylon mesh.

Draw two dark, even lines on paper or cardboard that will be visible through the mesh, with a distance of 7 cm between the lines. Place the mesh on the paper, pin it with a tailor’s needle, and cut it into strips.

We cut the adhesive fabric (non-woven fabric) into strips equal to the length of the first rectangle (yoke) and a width of 1.5 to 2.5 cm.

We will divide the cut pieces of fabric from chiffon and mesh into two parts, since we have a double skirt. The first layer is outer (top) and the second layer is inner (bottom).

To sew an American skirt for girls we will need (approximate material consumption):

ToolsMaterials *
ScissorsSatin, crepe satin (width not less than 1.22 m) 19 cm
Tailor's needles, pinNylon chiffon 2 m
Threads according to fabric colorWide elastic band (from 2.5 cm) length 0.55 m
IronWide satin ribbon (up to 3 cm) 1 m
Cardboard or paperTulle, nylon mesh for ruffles 44 m
Tape measureNon-woven fabric (width 1.22 m) 1 m

*If the length of the skirt increases, the listed consumables should be adjusted. A very fluffy skirt for a girl can be achieved if each tier of the skirt is made several times wider than the previous one.

Summer cotton skirt

We are preparing the details for our skirt. These sizes are suitable for a skirt for a girl with a height of 104-110 cm (if you need a different size, you just need to slightly adjust part of the belt up or down). For the main fabric, I took a 100% cotton shirt (the strip can be cut larger or smaller, 60-70 cm, depending on how full of a skirt you want, cut 2 strips); Any knitted (stretchy) fabric is suitable for the belt, for example, cash corse (the belt can be made thinner).

We sew the fabric for the belt on the sides and bend it in half. We also sew the main fabric on the sides, bend the hem of the skirt and stitch it.

Now we sew both parts together, bending the main fabric so that the same folds are obtained. At the top of the waistband, you can machine sew a strip for an elastic band (about 2 cm from the top), which is what I did. We insert the elastic band and our skirt is ready.

Skirt for girls

I also sewed a skirt for myself from the same fabric (see this link for a master class of my skirt with a pattern for size 42-46).

Creating a pattern

For this stage you will need graph paper, a pencil and eraser, a ruler and scissors. Patterning a skirt for a child will not take much time.

First, a small circle with a radius of 15.5 cm is drawn. Then a large circle with a radius of 40.5 cm is drawn (the length of the product and the waist, that is, 25 cm + 15.5 cm). Next, the finished pattern is cut out. To do this faster, it is better to fold the graph paper into four layers in a square.

Warm footer skirt

I sewed this skirt from warm fleece fleece. I got a set for a previously sewn turtleneck.

We cut out such details from the fabric (for the main part I used footer fabric, and the belt-cuffs - cashkorse). These pattern sizes are suitable for heights of 98-104 cm.

Decor options

Decor can be the most important part to complete a girl's skirt. The main advice: be brave and give free rein to your hands! Then the sewn skirt will sparkle on the girl, emphasizing the brightness and individuality of the child.

Not only can the style itself be very elegant, here are some examples:

  • The frills look neat and very delicate. Suitable for any skirt. You can make them large, you can carefully run them along the contour of the product.
  • Lace is a very feminine option. The elegance of such a product will please the eye both on a walk and when visiting.
  • Braid is a universal option. If you choose contrasting colors, it will turn out playful. This is the perfect way to unobtrusively emphasize individuality
  • Appliques - suitable for younger girls. Nowadays, various stripes and appliques are also popular among teenagers, but it is better to consult with the girl in advance so as not to get into trouble.
  • Embroidery is labor-intensive, but that makes it more valuable. No one else will have this design.
  • Batik is much faster than embroidery, but just as much individuality! In order to paint the fabric, you can also involve a little fashionista, and you can look up ideas on the Internet.
  • Buttons are an easy way to add decorative details to a seemingly purely practical item of clothing. The main thing is to choose bright button designs and create an individual design, then sew it on.

It is important to understand that the choice of decoration method will directly depend on the girl’s age, as well as on the purpose of the skirt: for going out, for a holiday or for everyday use. If the child is 5 - 7 years old, then braid or lace is suitable. Skirts for almost schoolgirls should be in no way inferior to older teenage models, except that they may be a little more frivolous.

For younger girls 3-4 years old, more daring and interesting solutions are suitable, including appliqués, an abundance of creative buttons, and even very simple but individual embroidery.

Scotland is the country where the ATM, the microwave oven, and the pleated skirt were invented. It was in Scotland that the first kilt was made, and not for the fairer sex. However, the freedom and originality of this cut quickly became popular among the female audience.

Skirts with pleats can most often be found in school and children's suits, because they look pretty on the youngest fashionistas.

Inspiration is never too much! Young princesses always want to be bright and individual. To sew the brightest children's skirt with an elastic band, look at the selection of styles and ideas, choose the one that suits you and start creating!

A straight skirt for a girl is an indispensable item in the wardrobe of a young fashionista

Skirts for girls

Girls (as well as boys) grow quickly, and the times when little fashionistas wore fluffy skirts (some of them were certainly pink and decorated with lace and fabric appliqués) are already a thing of the past. The time has come when a Straight Cut Skirt should appear in the wardrobe of a young fashionista. Yes, yes, that’s right, with a capital letter, because this is perhaps the first “adult” thing in a girl’s wardrobe. After all, by and large, there are no fundamental differences between straight skirts for girls and adult ladies.

Stylish and fashionable skirt for girls

Looking at the proposed photos of a children's skirt, sewn with your own hands, you can choose the best option for your own implementation.

The work on creating a new wardrobe item will be stage-by-stage and represents a sequence of certain actions that must be followed:
  • choosing a style and pattern for a future skirt;
  • selection of fabric and accessories, other elements;
  • cutting the material and joining with a basting seam;
  • preliminary fitting of the future product;
  • making machine seams and processing them;
  • final fitting and decoration of the skirt.

Beginning craftswomen are advised to choose simple patterns and simple styles, which will help improve their skills. To make a skirt with a complex cut using different processing processes, it is recommended to carefully study the instructions or take a look at the master class.

How to sew a flared circle skirt

The flared circle skirt is not much different from the circle skirt described above. The only difference is that you need to cut out and sew together several wedges (usually 4). Accordingly, we will need to fold the previously constructed pattern in half, trace it on the fabric and add seam allowances. If you wish, you can also add pleats at the waist - such a skirt will be much fuller!

How to sew a circle skirt for a girl and what to wear it with

If your family has a daughter or granddaughter, her closet is probably filled to the brim with a variety of clothes - skirts, dresses, blouses, shorts... And this is quite natural, because girls are still fashionistas, even at preschool age! One of the things that must be present in every girl’s wardrobe from childhood is a circle skirt.

The originally tailored model is comfortable to wear and suitable for girls, young women and women of any age. The little beauties love her because she looks very elegant, and at the same time does not hinder her movements and does not soar in the summer heat.

In this master class we will tell you in detail how to sew a circle skirt for a girl and what to wear it with.

Features of the sun skirt

The sun skirt has a rather interesting style. If you draw a pattern (on fabric or tracing paper, it doesn’t matter), you will probably notice the characteristic features of the cut of this particular model. If you unfold the product, the skirt will take the shape of a circle.

There are three ways to sew a sun skirt:

  • by cutting out a circle from a single piece of fabric - in this case we will get a classic circle skirt without seams;
  • having cut out two semicircles - such a skirt will have two side seams and it is called a “half-sun skirt” (we told you how to cut and sew such a product a little earlier in this lesson);
  • by cutting out several wedges (usually four) - such a skirt is called sun flares.

A circle skirt with an elastic band is an ideal option for a girl from three to ten years old, since such a product can be easily removed and put on independently. For older girls, a circle skirt with a yoke or a belt is suitable.

Selecting fabric and tools

Once the model is chosen, it's time to work on the fabric:

  1. Linen - suitable for summer options. Lightweight, comfortable material that allows the body to breathe. It is better to select linen fabric together with other materials, since it wrinkles quickly when clean.
  2. Cotton is another natural material that is suitable for both summer and winter.
  3. Silk looks festive and elegant. It is used more often for “going out” options.
  4. Satin is quite dense and very beautiful material. Suitable for a holiday or just for a walk.
  5. Velvet, corduroy and wool are dense, warm materials. More suitable for the autumn-winter season.
  6. Jeans is a dense, wear-resistant fabric. Ideal for everyday wear.

For the chosen sun skirt model, it is better to consider linen, cotton, satin and thin woolen fabric.

Tools you will need:

  • sewing machine;
  • measuring tape;
  • pattern paper;
  • scissors;
  • threads;
  • needle;
  • pencil;
  • a piece of chalk or soap;
  • pins.

Sewing a skirt with an elastic band with your own hands is easy if you follow all the steps.

Children's circle skirt for different ages

Even the youngest young ladies wear flared circle skirts, and many of them unconditionally fall in love with them and do not part with them for many years!

Skater skirt for ages 4-5 years

Preschoolers are the most ardent fans of this type of skirt. A multi-layer sun skirt made of tulle, satin with polka dots, and natural breathable fabrics will look beautiful. Most often, mothers and grandmothers sew skirts with elastic for their pets - they are comfortable, easy to sew and help little ones change clothes on their own in kindergarten. In addition, such models are suitable for dancing and active games, as they do not hinder movements.

Skater skirt for ages 6-7 years

With the onset of school time, parents are increasingly thinking about purchasing a school uniform, since in recent years it has been introduced everywhere in schools of all forms of ownership. Most often, the school charter allows you to play with clothing styles, while only requiring the preservation of a single color scheme and insignia. A circle skirt of a suitable color will be a wonderful item of clothing that can slightly dilute the strict school uniform.

Skater skirt for ages 8-10 years

Primary school girls no longer think so much about the comfort of their clothes as about their beauty and appearance. Here the circle skirt comes to the aid of the craftswomen again! Thanks to the variety of models, using the same pattern you can sew both curvy, voluminous models, as well as flowing or slightly flared ones. They can be high or low rise, mini, midi or maxi length, with or without pleats...

Skater skirt for teenage girls

Older girls are fascinated by fashion trends. Teenagers want to imitate their idols in everything, and it doesn’t matter whether they are singers, Hollywood superstars or tennis players. At this age, children are already quite independent and can choose clothes to suit their taste. Not always the right one, of course, but you just have to endure this time :) If you want to sew a skirt for your daughter or granddaughter, choose the fabric and style of the product together - look through fashion magazines or go shopping together to choose the optimal style of the product;)

Sewing stages

  1. We sew over the elastic ends of the future belt. It is important that the belt is not twisted, like a Möbius strip.
  2. It is better to iron the sections of the future skirt and process them with an overlocker.
  3. We gather the skirt at the waist, forming beautiful folds, and fasten it to the elastic with pins.
  4. Carefully attach the elastic waistband to the main skirt.
  5. If necessary, level the bottom and hem the cut with a rolled overlock or a decorative seam with a hem.
  6. We decorate. A skirt with an elastic band for a girl can be very elegant.

All stages are completed, the product is ready!

How to secure the cut edges of an elastic band

Unfold the elastic allowances as shown in the photo, you can even iron them.

Now stitch these allowances along the cut edge of the elastic, as shown in the photo.

Artificial gum fibers that have come out can be scorched with a lighter or simply cut off with scissors.

The side seams of the skirt need to be ironed, that is, both fabric allowances will be turned out.
