What do you knit from grass?
Knitting weed refers to shaped threads. Therefore, like any shaped thread, it is not suitable for knitting all types of clothing. From grass it turns out great:
- children's elegant clothes;
- shawls and scarves;
- boleros and decorative pullovers for special occasions;
- fur coats and fur coats;
- toys and pillows;
- finishing for any knitted clothing and accessories.
Grass yarn is not very practical to wear, so it is not suitable for “hiking” everyday items. In addition, this yarn does not keep you warm in cold weather - this also needs to be taken into account when choosing a clothing style.
Seriously about weed
Recently I was asked why I don’t like weed yarn. Here are my thoughts on this matter. Let me make a reservation right away - I am not a designer or a costume historian. I am a journalist by training. Yes, I am aware that this profession is now discredited. But the profession as such cannot be responsible for specific individuals and their actions. I specifically say this to smoothly lead you to the next thought. I personally don't have any negative feelings towards weed. Moreover, the “weed” itself is, um, innocent. There's nothing wrong with her. It's all about who, how and in what quantities it was used. Let's dance from the stove. “Grass” is made from a variety of yarns called “shaped”. Let us call upon the great and mighty for help. What does the word “shaped” mean? A large explanatory dictionary gives three definitions, of which the last one suits us. (I will not cite dictionary entries in full. Firstly, you will get tired; secondly, there is a reasonable limit on the size of the post. If you wish, you can read it yourself at your leisure).
So. Large explanatory dictionary: SHAPED, -aya, -oe. 3. Relief, embossed (about fabrics) or having a complex cross-section, complex configuration. F. velvet. Fth yarn. Fth iron. Fth plywood. F pipes (not straight).
Dahl's Dictionary:
FASHION m. French cut, close, image, appearance, sample, become, harmony. The style is more expensive than the stock. They don't pay for work, but for style. Tailors charge for one style, for a fashionable cut. Carpenters write out drawings of furniture for the style. Remove the hat style. Shaped pattern. A fashionable thing, a beautiful cut, by the way. *0n turned things around to a different style. From a stupid point of view to a new style.
Ozhegov's Dictionary:
— SHAPE: the external shape of the product F. furniture.
- FASION: == force F. in front of girlfriends.
Summarizing the multi-story book, we come to a conclusion. Shaped is special, very beautiful, complex, different, intricate. Such things, as a rule, are intended for decoration and decoration. With regard to yarn: of course, not every modern fancy yarn is suitable exclusively for finishing, but in the case of “grass” it is just right. Then the question arises: for finishing what? Since most often discussions about the appropriateness of this yarn arise in the context of wearable items (rather than toys and Christmas tree decorations), we will further move in this direction.
So, things richly decorated with grass or even made entirely from it.
Here I will allow myself to quote:
“Not so long ago I held seminars in Istanbul and met my students right at the airport,” fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev recalls with bitterness. — English, French, and German women get off the plane and walk calmly into a taxi, as always happens. And so Russian women began to come out... They didn’t have to say that they were Russian: heels in rhinestones, bare navels, jeans all “with talk” (as they said in the 19th century about clothes with small details) - all these gold edgings or pockets on butt, studded with rhinestones and with the inscriptions “Rich”, “Famous” or “Love me”. They had a lot of translucent lace. And they were all wearing “kokoshniks” (“kokoshniks” are black glasses with the Coco Chanel, Valentino, Ferre brand, also studded with rhinestones). And these “swan princesses” swam out from the airport for the mustachioed Turks to see, and it was interesting.”
Russians abroad are recognized by overdressed - excessive clothing (yes, not always and not all, but these are just exceptions that prove the rule). So “weed” in everyday clothes is that very excess. At a lower price, however, from the same garden. I emphasize the word “casual” because trimming wedding dresses or, for example, adding a bolero to a wedding dress is a completely different matter. In addition, you understand that grass is different from grass - there is a quality reminiscent of swan fluff, and there are hard rods sticking out in all directions, like a hungover hedgehog.
Sadly, excess has a close relative called vulgarity. As many people know, this word has a rich and controversial history. And here we will again call on our native language for help.
Large explanatory dictionary:
VOLID, -aya, -oe; went, -a, -o; the most vulgar. 3. Unoriginal, hackneyed, banal. P. motive. Observing matchmaking rituals seemed vulgar to him. // Tasteless, rude, vulgar. Pth flowers. The fence is decorated with vulgar curlicues.
Dictionary of Russian synonyms and similar expressions. Author N. Abramov. Vulgar, coarse, rough, dirty, ordinary, low, base, flat, vulgar, tasteless, colorless, farcical, banal, boulevard, vulgar, trivial, stereotyped, indecent; hackneyed, boring, famous, well known. A hackneyed one-liner. Chewed and chewed. Official phrase, witticism. Wed. Rude, Immoral and Common.
It is noteworthy that the original word “vulgar” is a participle of the verb “to go,” which later became an adjective. In the sense, “went” means “has been going on since ancient times.” In Russian monuments of business language, in acts and charters until the 17th century. it is used in the following meanings: 1) ancient, ancient, primordial; originally belonging; 2) the same, usual.
The famous scientist and expert on the Russian language V.V. Vinogradov writes in his “History of Words”: “At the end of the 17th century. - early 18th century — in connection with the revaluation of antiquity and ancient Russian traditions, the word vulgar takes on a negative connotation. V.K. Trediakovsky reported in his report: “The local seminarians have a vulgar knowledge of the Latin language.” In the dictionary of 1847, the word vulgar is defined as follows: “1) “low quality, very ordinary, unimportant.” The vulgar painting in the picture exposes the infancy of art. 2) “low, rustic.” Vulgar speeches." V. V. Vinogradov also writes about the word “vulgar” in the article “Gogol’s Language and Its Meaning in the History of the Russian Language”: “Vulgar is in the language of the 30s and 40s - a synonym for the words “ordinary”, “banal to the point of hackneyedness” "
So, excessive and banal to the point of being hackneyed, and therefore tasteless. A stole made of thin mohair, “sprinkled” along the edge with air fluff, and the same stole, completely knitted from green/blue/black “grass”. Both there and there fancy yarn is available. But who cares, right?
In fact, we should say thank you to “weed” and its analogues, because they work as a litmus test, as an indicator of the presence of taste. And taste is an elusive thing, which is why there are so many fierce disputes in this field.
What are the features of grass knitting?
Knitting from grass yarn is not such an easy task, so you shouldn’t start your knitting journey with grass. However, if you have already gotten the hang of it a little, and you almost always have the same number of loops in the last row as there were in the first, you can try this interesting type of yarn. However, keep in mind a few recommendations from experienced needlewomen:
- when choosing a model, remember that products made from grass are quite voluminous - remember the proportions of the figure;
- when starting to knit, choose a tool that is much thicker than usual: if you knit with knitting needles, take at least 4 numbers, and if you crochet, numbers 3-6 will do;
- if you do not see the loops after casting them with grass, and cannot start knitting, add regular cotton thread to the grass - then the loops will become distinguishable;
- the purl stitch when knitting with grass thread turns out to be more fleecy than the front stitch;
- After knitting, the grass is “combed” up and down with a soft brush to make the product look more beautiful.
What can be made and knitted from yarn
Good afternoon everyone. In continuation of yesterday’s article about “grass” yarn, I want to share my finds and ideas for using this unusual yarn.
Seasonal and themed decor

Easter ones are probably in second place in popularity
. They can also be found on sale. I haven’t seen these in regular hypermarkets and art stores, but in flower stores there are usually always a lot of them in the spring.
But such decor can easily be made with your own hands. As you can see, here the “grass” is used as a winding. No need to knit! And if in the first case a foam base is used, then in the second it is made of foil and other improvised means. You can't see what was used inside, but it could be newspaper, paper, or the like.
By the way, the basis of the New Year's wreath
You can also make it using grass of different colors: green shades, white, gold and silver yarn.

In addition, you can make all-season decorations
for the interior, simply choosing the appropriate colors for this: for spring - light green grass, for summer - brighter colors, for autumn - red-brown shades, and so on. I have already said more than once that such seasonal decorations are currently popular in beauty salons, fitness centers, shops... Attractive display cases are the key to success!

In addition to Easter wreaths, you can make other holiday decor from grass. This yarn can be used to decorate Easter baskets,
or knit a circle of grass - such

In February, of course, it’s not relevant to talk about New Year’s decor. Nevertheless, it’s a great idea to make a Christmas tree
from “grass” yarn. Not everyone needs or is suitable for large Christmas trees, and I know that many make do with small and even miniature options. And you can make just these with your own hands.
The Christmas tree can be crocheted or knitted using “grass” yarn.

Or make a winding. It's easy and simple. Any cone (foam plastic, cardboard or thick paper, hard felt) is taken as a basis and wrapped. You can attach it with glue or thread. This will depend on the base used.

I really like children's educational rugs
handmade from “grass” yarn or using this yarn. I look at such wonderful works, and I just want to arrange the figures))).

Plain carpets with fluffy pile also look nice
. Yesterday I showed my work - I knitted a small rug for product photography.

Many people are biased towards this yarn when imagining clothes. In fact, it all depends on the chosen model and the pattern.
This yarn is fluffy and looks very much like fur, so clothes knitted entirely from this yarn will undoubtedly add volume. Such things will obviously fill you up.
But if you use this yarn wisely, for example, combine it with thin threads, you can get very interesting models.
This is just the first example. Here, “grass” yarn alternates with thin threads and the product looks like a cross-cut fur coat.
. In my opinion, such an elegant, light and thin blouse with a belt will, on the contrary, make you look slim. Honestly, I fell in love with this model and will definitely make something similar for myself.
This striped knitting will look great in vests, cardigans, fur coats, and coats.
Whole products made from weed also have their place. First of all, these include things that are designed to complement the image and do not completely hide the figure. These are stoles, boleros, capes, capes, scarves
.
As well as decorative bags and other accessories
