How to learn to sew a mermaid evening dress without a pattern

It’s very easy to learn how to sew a mermaid evening dress without a pattern. You can sew it in two evenings. Long dress of a tight silhouette with open shoulders and an American armhole. This dress is made from compressed fabric, but any fabric with a lot of stretch will work. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that highly stretchable fabrics, such as corrugated, compressed, knitwear, usually stretch along the lobar. Therefore, in order for the dress to stretch in width and not in length, you need to cut it not along the lobar, as usual, but along the transverse. For a dress up to size 48 inclusive, you will need 160 cm of fabric with a standard width of 150 cm.

How to draw a drawing of a mermaid evening dress

We don’t need a large pattern, but only a small drawing drawn on a checkered sheet at a scale of 1:10. Below you see a piece of your fabric 160/150 cm. This is how the details of your dress will be located on the fabric. The two large rectangles on the top left are the front and back pieces of the dress. The narrow long rectangle below them is the gate. Five identical trapezoids are wedges for the bottom of the skirt.

How to cut a mermaid evening dress

We lay out the fabric on a large table and use chalk or a thin piece of soap to draw these details along a ruler. The rectangles for the front and back should be equal to half the width of the hips plus 2 cm. The length should be equal to the distance from the point below the shoulder, about 12-15 cm, to the place where the wedges will be sewn on - just above the knee.

The rectangle for the collar should be 20 cm wide. To determine its length, measure the circumference of the body in the shoulder area with a centimeter and add 2 cm for the seams.

The length of the wedges should be such that, together with the upper part of the dress, the desired length of the dress is obtained. By the way, this style allows you to sew a dress with a train. Then the rear wedges should be significantly longer than the front ones, and gradually shorten on the sides. The width and number of wedges is arbitrary. The only thing is that their top part should be equal to the bottom edge of the top part of the dress.

Let's cut out these parts.

Now you need to cut out the front and back. They are cut the same. Therefore, we fold the rectangles face to face and fold them in half lengthwise so that the parts are symmetrical. Now we draw a line corresponding to the blue line in the drawing. At the chest line, the width should be equal to a quarter of the chest circumference, at waist level - a quarter of the waist circumference. We add 1 cm to the seams. Since our fabric stretches, there is no need to add to the looseness of the fit. Slightly round the top edge of the product and the bottom. Cut it out.

Ready-made paper pattern in full size.

This is one of the simplest variations on the mermaid theme, but despite the apparent simplicity of the style, this dress pattern is not suitable for beginner couturiers, especially since the “mermaid” cannot be recommended for sewing the first or second product.

The main difficulty in cutting and sewing this dress lies in adjusting the length of the product, which cannot be done in the usual way.

You will have to face the need to accurately measure the length of the product, taking into account the height of the heel.

The task of selecting fabric for a mermaid dress is not too simple either.

Neither stable nor highly stretchable fabrics are suitable.

The ideal fabric will be dense fabrics that slightly stretch along the transverse thread and are stable in the lobar direction.

In other words, the fabric should stretch slightly across and not stretch at all lengthwise.

The set of patterns includes (Fig. 1) patterns for the middle and side parts of the back, as well as patterns for the middle and side parts of the shelf.

On each pattern the fractional direction of the thread is marked.

The fabric consumption will be up to 3.5 meters with a fabric width of 1.4 cm and, of course, while maintaining the original length of the product during the cutting process.

How to cut a mermaid dress

Once the dress size has been selected and the patterns have been printed, assembled and cut out, they should be adjusted to length.

Please note: the pattern size is the bodice size and the hip size, which we choose by comparing the “volumes” of the pattern with the size of our favorite clothes. In this case, for comparison, we will need a tight dress.

And the length that we must adjust is the length of the skirt of this dress, measured from the waist to the bottom according to the customer’s figure. It is very important to measure the length of the skirt (Du) along the side seam of the clothing worn on the figure.

In this case, the figure should be tied with a thin belt, such as an elastic band. In this case, the position of the waist will be reliably recorded and the likelihood of errors in taking measurements will be minimized.

Another important point in taking measurements for a skirt: the customer must be wearing the shoes in which she will wear this dress. That is, we measure Du along the side seam, taking into account the height of the heel to the floor.

And immediately after Du we take measurements from the floor to knee level - Dk. The knee level in this product, as in tight trousers, should be directly above the kneecap.

We record both measurements and take the same Du and Dk from the finished patterns.

We compare both pairs of measurements. If you need to make the skirt shorter, you can bend the horizontal fold on the patterns in the length correction area, which is marked on all patterns with shading. But it’s better to lengthen the pattern by extending the inclined lines of the “bell” of the skirt, in the same way as you add an allowance to the hem.

In other words, the knee line cannot be lowered, but it can be raised.

Cutting a mermaid dress is quite simple (Fig. 2).

The fabric is folded in half, facing inward, the edges are aligned and the cut is parallel to the edge of the table.

The cutting details are laid out taking into account the fractional direction, as economically as possible.

Seam allowances are 1 cm. Exceptions are the neckline, sprout (back neckline) and armholes - they are cut out without allowances. At the bottom we add 2.3 - 3 cm without taking into account the extension under the heel.

As you can see, the lunges are very large, so for economic reasons, the dress can be cut off at the waist.

In addition to the main details of the cut, you will have to cut out the facings.

We cut out the facings from dublerin according to the same patterns or according to the product without seam allowances (Fig. 3).

Then, we glue the dubbing onto the remaining fabric and add allowances in the places where the facings are stitched.

For more information on how to process a neckline with facings, watch the video tutorial and read the article

Of course, you can change the neckline if desired and add a deep neckline at the back.

If you don't need a neckline, you can make a sweetheart cutout along the middle back seam.

The sewing sequence also looks straightforward.

We start by “assembling” the front and back for fitting - we wash and lightly iron the raised seams. The bravest ones can grind reliefs. But the middle back seam, side seam and shoulder seam must be basted and ironed. We sew the zipper to the middle seam of the back.

During the fitting, in addition to specifying the degree of fit, we trim the armholes and clarify the outline of the neckline.

See how to cut an armhole

Then all seams can be stitched, overcast and carefully ironed.

The zipper is ground before finishing the neckline and armholes with facings.

All that remains is to trim the bottom of the dress into a hem with an open cut.

How to sew a mermaid evening dress

Baste the side seams. We sweep away the shuttlecock wedges. We attach the flounce to the dress. We sew the side edge of the collar to make a ring. Let's try it on the shoulders. It should fit fairly tightly around the shoulders, as it will hold the entire dress on. If necessary, adjust the length of the collar. Let's sew this seam. We will have a double gate. Therefore, we bend each of the edges of the collar half a centimeter and baste it. Fold the gate in half lengthwise. We put the top edge of the front inside on one side, the top edge of the back on the other side and baste.

Now you can try on the dress. We fold the gate lengthwise again. This will make it twice as narrow and give it volume. At this stage, you need to adjust the width of the dress and the depth of the armhole. To do this, it is better to put the dress on the wrong side and, if necessary, pin it with pins. Most likely the dress will not fit at the back and will need undercuts. Pin at waist level to make it clear how much needs to be removed in the darts. Take off your dress. Adjust the seams.

To make the darts, divide the back width into four parts. Draw two vertical lines with chalk on the right and left (shown in red in the picture). Fold the dress along one of the lines, mark the dart from the center to the edges.

The groove should approach the edge very smoothly. Baste the second dart in the same way. Try on the dress. If necessary, adjust the darts. Sew the darts. This is also done from the center to the edges.

Sew the side seams and flounce seams. Finish these seams with a zigzag stitch. Now you need to process the armholes. To do this, fold the edge of the armhole twice by half a centimeter, baste and stitch. Now sew the outside seam of the collar along the crease edge. It is better to do this with large stitches.

And the last thing: fold the edge of the hem half a centimeter twice, baste and stitch.

The dress is ready!
